None of the collectables going yet. Rogues anthology as its bloody huge , the Long Earth, Long War and Long Mars by Pratchett and Stephen Baxter as the series has been awful and I wont read the last two parts. Most of the rest are paperbacks , Skulldugery Pleasand, Forever War, Press Start to Play. Can't remember much else

Kevin wrote: "Glad to see you picking up Derek Mahon, Barbara. I'm a fan"I think he is under-appreciated. I've read some of his poems and wanted to read more. His poem The Snow Party introduced me to the 17th century haiku poet Basho.

I also went to Chapters today but they had none of the books I went in for. They didn't even have Lord Edgeware Dies. It looks like Chapters stock took a hit over Christmas. I did pick up The Library of Unrequited Love by Sophie Divry and The Resoration of Otto Laird by Nigel Packer for €1.99.
To console myself I ordered 5 books from my to buy list from Awesome :-)
Fingers crossed, I should be on a college-based trip in March, including Dublin. I hope their stock is replenished by then. :)

I'll be in Dublin airport in March but alas only in transit on way to Edinburgh. But I'll shop at the airport on my way home.

Emma and Trelawn, I will do :).

It's a quick trip and Aer Lingus has the most economical fares. They now fly directly from Dulles Airport, Washington but not everyday. I hope to pick up some books at WH Smith and more Teeling!
The first book parcel of the year arrived;Picnic at Hanging Rock (for my Australia choice)
The Lost Garden by Helen Humphreys ( I loved The Evening Chorus)
Supreme Courtship by Christopher Buckley ( used to love his books, so funny)
My Love Affair With England ( I want to read more travel writing this year)
A Question of Upbringing by Anthony Powell
Trelawn wrote: "The first book parcel of the year arrived;Picnic at Hanging Rock (for my Australia choice)

Happy reading Trelawn!
I picked up The Santa Klaus Murder last night at my local indie bookstore. It's part of the reissued British Classic mysteries. I may save it til next holiday season as I have a lot on my plate for reading this month. Also this week a copy of The Great New Orleans Kidnapping Case: Race, Law, and Justice in the Reconstruction Era arrived for a March book club. It's hardcover so I looked for a used copy. Also a late Christmas present arrived from Kenny's and is a gift from my son - Shetland by Ann Cleeves - a book of photos and essays. The book isn't on GR (:
So I was in a shop in dublin and picked up a few books Cleopatra, being an account of the fall and vengeance of Harmachis, the royal Egyptian, as set forth by his own hand

There was loads more books I could've picked up here.
In Chapter's I was very good not to buy anything but Oh My Gods wasn't it a magical place and what a memorizing smell..
You could just get lost in it...

Now to get them into Home On Sunday LOL
Emma wrote: "I went up to Newry today where there is still a Waterston especially and got two books:The Little Paris Bookshop

Bothe sound good Emma. The Little Paris Bookshop is on my TBR but I doubt I'll get to it this year unless it come up as a bookclub read. Still, there all of next year not touched yet ;-)
Emma wrote: "I went up to Newry today where there is still a Waterston especially and got two books:The Little Paris Bookshop

They both look really good, Emma. I'm trying not to buy any books until my trip in March. We'll see how long that lasts.

Cathleen - I am also observing a book buying ban and a yarn buying ban. I'm going to Edinburgh on spring break and guess your trip to Ireland is during spring break - is that right?

Yes, it is. It will be the second full week of March. Another school trip--I'm looking forward to it :).
Paul--yes, and March here gets dreary. We don't have much of a spring at all, so that's another bonus--actually feeling and seeing a bit of spring :).
Emma wrote: "You must be over around Paddys Day then Cathleen."It's the week of March 6th, so the week before. I'm getting excited :)

We have the week of March 13th off. I am flying on Monday the 14th and return Monday the 21st. I'll be in Edinburgh on St. Paddy's Day taking a knitting class:) But I am sure I can find a place to toast the day.
Paul wrote: "How long will you be here"We fly over on Saturday 3/5---and drive all around the country in a big bus :)--and then finish up in Dublin and fly out the following weekend, Saturday 3/12. We get into Dublin sometime late afternoon on that Wednesday.

Margo wrote: "Cathleen wrote: "Paul wrote: "How long will you be here"We fly over on Saturday 3/5---and drive all around the country in a big bus :)--and then finish up in Dublin and fly out the following week..."
Margo, I'm visiting with a group--two colleagues and a bunch of college students. It's a spring break trip sponsored by the college where I teach.
Emma wrote: "Depending on how much freedom you have Cathleen we'll have to try meet up when you're in Dublin. Would likely have to be an evening though what with work and that."That would be really nice, Emma. I'll keep you posted :).
I saw Kevin listed Vivid Faces: The Revolutionary Generation in Ireland, 1890-1923 so I got a copy for only $11.76 with shipping from The Book Depository. I checked Kenny's afterwards - it was $13.50. ABE had TBD listing which is why I went there first.Edited to add - I know I broke my book buying ban.

I'm surprised nobody has fessed up yet Emma.
I've been making good use of my local library to help me read more diversely, get my GRI monthly and quarterly but still keep on the straight and narrow with my book buying ban.
Right now I have out 6 items:
Ancillary Mercy
Bertie's Guide to Life and Mothers
Redwood and Wildfire
The Killing Moon (which I own, but can't seem to find my copy. I want to reread it before reading the concluding volume in the duo logy).
A Star Called Henry
Beloved
I also have 5 books on hold:
Bitch Planet, Vol 1: Extraordinary Machine
Midnight Taxi Tango
Only Ever Yours
Locas
The House of Silk
I'm not sure how I'll get to all of these. At least I didn't pay for them though!

I'm being really good lately, the only books i've bought in Jan 16 were:All the Light We Cannot See for book club
The House of Silk and Only Ever Yours
I'm having a luck streak in competitions though and have won 3 audiobooks:
Misadventures Of Fatwoman, Halfway to the Grave and Peak Season
Emma wrote: "That's pretty good Margo. I always think that buying book club books don't count. When I'm doing book buying bans I just tend to try avoid buying books that are just for my own personal reading."Oh I agree Emma. Book club books are essencial to life and sanity!
Sara, Interested to see what you think of Shadowed Sun once you finish Killing Moon. Theres a decent time gap between the two.

Margo, Emma, I agree that book club books don't, but I always try to get from the library whenever possible anyway.
Paul, I'll report back. FYI, I think you'd like the Imperial Radch trilogy that starts with Ancillary Justice and ends with Ancillary Mercy.

I'm undecided on the Ann Leckie books as it she seems to be a marmite writer again.Reviews either love it or hate it . I meant to pick up the first when she got the Hugo. I will try at some point.I got Fifth Season by NK Jemisin last week as its my SFF group read for next month. Really looking forward to if.
I agree with all who said buying book club books doesn't count for the ban.I picked up Mrs. Engels at the library for my Feb. Solas Nua book club. I have the 2 quarterly Irish reads on my shelves already. I resisted picking up Reykjavík Nights: Murder in Reykjavík also at the library.
As I reported I did order 2 1916 related books - still waiting - Vivid Faces: The Revolutionary Generation in Ireland, 1890-1923 and Name upon Name.
As I am teaching a course on how to teach Social Studies I am trying to read things related. After listening to The Wordy Shipmates I found a copy on Paperback Swap and ordered it:) And intrigued by the musical Hamilton
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAiEV...
I bought Ron Chernow's book Alexander Hamilton.

Like Emma I have also received a mysterious package from Book Depository. Mine contained Interpreter of Maladies. Whoever is being so generous must really fess up!

I have brought 9 books into my house. The total spent was $2. I went to the library store to drop off books (a bag of 19) but they aren't taking donations any more. I had to ask to find out the library is being torn down which means several years without one and lots and lots of my tax dollars.
The books I got for my $2 were
Captains of the Sands by Jorge Amado
Home is the Sailor by Jorge Amado
Work Song by Ivan Doig
The Mortician's Daughter
Priest by Ken Bruen
Then from Paperback Swap I got:
The End of the Hunt by Thomas Flanagan
The Wordy Shipmates by Sarah Vowell
While My Pretty One Knits
And my book came from the book depository Name Upon Name.

Good haul barbara! Haven't heard of any of them, but While My Pretty One Knits sounds appropriate ;)
One of Thomas Flanagan's books was mentioned in the nominations and a few are out of print.Ivan Doig was an American writer whose books are set in Montana. After reading Fourth of July Creek I looked for more books set there - there aren't many.
I hadn't heard of Ken Bruen's book Priest but for 25 cents I couldn't pass it up.
