Whoa! That would be so cool if the book I read was written by Julie Andrews :) That plot definitely sounds familiar, although that cover doesn't ring a bell. My mom was the biggest Julie Andrews fan, so I wouldn't be surprised if this is it - I could see her picking it out for me just based on that fact.

Oh yay! Glad this helped :) I bought a copy and it's on my one year-old daughter's bookshelf for us to read together in a few years.
I don't remember the girl's backstory - I just remember that she discoverers a house on the opposite side of a brick or stone wall. It's abandoned, and she decides she wants to make it her own special place. She brings supplies and sneaks off to spend time there/housekeep.
Now that I say it out loud it doesn't sound all that interesting - and obviously I remember SO FEW actual details. I just remember getting it out from the library time after time, and I WANTED that house!
