What have you read lately? Have you added or dropped anything from your pull list recently? What books are you looking forward to this fall?

message 2: by Hanson (new)

Hanson It usually seems I constantly add...and robably need to start dropping some titles. BUT! I am picking up Metal, which I've been very happy with so far; I am currently reading Starlin's Cosmic Odyssey that features art by pre-Hellboy Mike Mignola, which so far has been a great read! I'm looking forward to the Doomday Clock event this fall, I've always liked Gary Frank's art on Superman and I trus Geoff Johns to deliver story-wise. As for non-DC books I have been burned by Marvel too many times by their events but I'm looking forward to some of the lines that will come through Legacy. In the indy book world, I'm neck-deep in Jimmy's Bastards, Garth Ennis' little ball of spy thriller insanity, it's been a hilarious rollercpaster so far and I highly recommend it for Archer and James Bond fans.

message 3: by Hanson (new)

Hanson And I should really re-read these before posting with so many typo's.

message 4: by Phil (new)

Phil | 169 comments In the last week or so I've read The Little Red Wolf, The Joker, Bloodshot, Volume 2: The Rise and the Fall, Unity, Volume 1: To Kill a King, Taproot, Monstress, Vol. 2: The Blood, The Fade Out: Act One, and Generations. The stand-outs were Monstress Volume 2 and Generations, but I was not disappointed with any of these books.

I wasn't a huge fan of Monstress Volume 1. The characters never really struck a chord with me and the story just didn't seem to develop in a real meaningful way. Volume 2 does a nice job of turning both of those things around. I felt like I knew and understood Maika Halfwolf a lot more, not to mention the other characters. There are some cool supporting characters added to the series that I would like to see more of. It seemed like she had a lot more purpose than just killing stuff in this arc. The art is still beautiful in this volume.

Generations is a great slice of life book featuring a young gay man in a rural town in Italy. There is wonderful character progression, which is helped along by Matteo, the protagonist, having been dumped shortly before the book opens. By the end of the book he is able to take ownership of his sexuality, but that's not the crucial part of the story. The creator uses that aspect to tell a nice story about family and relationships in general. I almost passed on reading this one and was pleasantly surprised at how deep it is.

message 5: by Joe (new)

Joe Wilson (joewilson82) My favorites of the week-
Batman #30, Asthonishing X-men #3, X-men Gold #11

message 6: by Jason (new)

Jason Sandberg (jason_sandberg_ebooks) | 16 comments In anticipation of Javier Rodriguez picking up the art chores on ROYALS, I breezed through the first 7 issues. I highly recommend it for those who want an Inhuman fix. The deposed Inhuman royal family are led by Marvel Boy on a quest to uncover the origins of the Kree genetics program that creates/seeds Inhumans throughout the universe. Marvel Boy is a favorite of mine (I'm amused by how his anti-hero/jerk attitude is the result of culture clash) and Al Ewing's writing on USAvengers made me eager to give ROYALS a try.

This sounds wonderful. I've added it to my to-read list. Thank you for the heads up!

message 9: by Wayland (new)

Wayland Smith | 263 comments This week's run to the comic shop:

Titans 15- There's something worse than HIVE lurking...
Star Wars 36- R2D2 goes to rescue 3PO and takes on a Star Destroyer to do it
Shadow 2- the Shadow in the modern era. Can't say I'm loving this one.
Ms. Marvel 22- the community rallies together
Dresden Files Dog Men 4- things get worse for Harry and Listens To Wind
Harley Quinn 25th Anniversary Special- a lot of odd little short stories
Detective 964- Spoiler learns a secret about Anarky and Clayface's cure gets a setback
Defenders 5- Diamondback escapes and the apparent death of a long-time Marvel New Yorker
Batgirl & The Birds of Prey 14- Helena takes her class for a field trip. What could possibly go wrong?
Generations: Captain Marvel/Captain Mar-Vell- Carol and the original Mar-Vell in the Negative Zone
Weapon X 8- The "Hulk-verine" story gets worse and they call for backup

message 10: by Wayland (new)

Wayland Smith | 263 comments A bit later than usual, but this week's comic run:

Aquaman 28- Arthur and Dolphin fight for Atlantis from inside, as Mera and Garth try to free the city from the outside.
Suicide Squad 25- The Squad and part of the League clash with a possessed Amanda Waller.
Avengers 11- The Stupid Empire is over, but the team has lost their funding. What's next for the heroes?
Generations- Ms. Marvel/Ms. Marvel- Kamala gets to see Carol in her earlier career.
Green Arrow 31- The archer and his allies square off with the Burned Men.
Harley Quinn 28- Harley for mayor? Seriously, who thought THAT was a good idea?
Luke Cage 7- the mess around Noah Bernstien's work continues.
Nightwing 29-cross over with METAL. I have no idea what's going on here.
Star Wars Annual 3- Han's past catches up with him while he and Leia scout locations for a new Rebel basel .
US Avengers 10- the aftermath of the fall of the Stupid Empire catches up with the team.
X-Men Gold 12- Focus on... Creepy New Guy. No, really.

Daniel | 265 comments A lot of book reading this month, i don't post here often to avoid spoilers of any books I may be reading ...

Secret Empire - I like to stay current on my EVENTS!! this one required alot of reading and preparation
The Mighty Captain Marvel, Vol. 1: Alien Nation
The Mighty Thor, Volume 3: The Asgard/Shi'ar War
Batman: Detective Comics, Vol. 4 - Gotta get ready for the upcoming Story
The Ultimates 2, Volume 1: Troubleshooters
Iceman Vol. 1: Thawing Out - SO GOOD!!!
Godzilla: The Half Century War - For our local Comic book club
Nightwing, Volume 2: Back to Blüdhaven

Black Clover, Vol. 1
Black Clover Vol. 2 - Read these 2 on Rene's recommendation

Finally I read all 7 Volumes of Saga (Humblebrag) in a weekend to catch up

Lastly i tried to read Fatale for the book club but didn't enjoy nor finished it

The only books i read pretty much monthly are the ongoing Batman, DC Metal including the one shots and Mister Miracle

message 12: by Phil (new)

Phil | 169 comments I've done a lot of reading in the past few weeks. This list probably doesn't include everything though.

The Royals: Masters of War
Old City Blues
X-Men: Messiah CompleX - This made me appreciate Cable, but it went on way too long.
Ultimate Spider-Man, Volume 6: Venom - This was a reread. Not quite as good as I remembered. Eddie Brock is portrayed so unsympathetically. I like how Peter rebounds from the breakup with MJ.
Black Hammer, Vol. 1: Secret Origins - Not the best Lemire book. Still enjoyable though.
Archer & Armstrong, Volume 4: Sect Civil War
Water Memory
Rapture - Loved it. Anything from Valiant featuring the Deadside is pretty much a win in my book.
Bedlam, Vol. 1
Captain Marvel, Volume 1: In Pursuit of Flight - Disappointing. DeConnick's other Captain Marvel series was much more enjoyable.
Fatale, Vol. 1: Death Chases Me
Heartthrob Vol. 1
Moon Knight Vol. 3: Birth and Death (Moon Knight - Amazing finish to the series. I love this character so it's just perfect.

How is The Mighty Thor? I've been interested in checking out this series because I like Jason Aaron and the previous iterations of the character. Marvel books have been pretty hit or miss for me lately though.

Wayland Smith | 263 comments Thor has been a great series. Between it and Star Wars, I'm about ready to read anything Jason Aaron writes.

Hey, SO i have been reading Aaron's run since Thor: God of Thunder, Volume 1: The God Butcher and although Thor has never been my main priority, it has been so interesting, every time I catch up (I usually wait for a trade or two) i am pulled right back into the Story. Aaron has been handling both characters the Current Thor and Odinson (Old Thor), his run really fill you in on the mythology of the 9 realms, there is an overarching narrative that connects the whole story, many characters and also i believe he is adding to the Thor mythos (haven't read much of the older Thor). Will definitely recommend

Saga completely lives up to the hype I can't believe I stopped reading for so long, glad to be caught up again

Also Iceman is just delightful...

Thanks for the input on Thor guys! I will definitely add it to my list of books to read. I just picked up Star Wars Vol. 2 - Showdown on the Smuggler's Moon from the library, which I'm excited to read. I've only read a few the newer Star Wars books so far and they've all been good.

Sounds like I might have to look for Iceman when it comes out in trade. Not a character I was really interested in, but Mike's comments on the show have me convinced to give this new series a shot.

message 20: by Wayland (new)

Wayland Smith | 263 comments And today's run:

Invincible Iron Man 11- MJ, Friday, Riri, and Amanda share stories about early encounters with Tony Stark.
Blue Beetle 13- an attempt to get Tina home ends with Jaime in the 31st century. Oops. Guest starring Justice League 3001
Detective 965- focus on Tim Drake
Generations: The Americas- Sam goes back in time, meets Steve in WWII, and lives a whole life in the past.
Red Sonja 9- more of Sonja's quest, Max's attempt to get home, and a strange man following the swordswoman
Bombshells United- Diana, Cassie, Donna, and Dawnstar in the midst of the US Internment Camp mess in WWII.
Mighty Thor 23- Thor Foster vs Thor Volstagg with Thor Odinson dropping by to make things as complicated as possible.
Suicide Squad 26- a Metal tie in. Since I'm not getting that, I have no damn idea what's going on here.
Batman/Shadow 6- the end of the team up
Justice League of America 15- Ray Palmer returns as the Atom
Marvel Legacy 1- from a really early (Stone Age) grouping of Marvel characters to the present day, things are getting weird.

Let us know how this is. Marvel is pushing it so hard, but the previews don't look very good to me. I feel like I'm falling more and more off the Marvel boat lately.

I read the book, wasn't planning on picking it up but it had a really cool Lenticular cover, that being said it is an a "set up" issue, i like the characters they are working with, there is a very cool reveal that will make alot of FANS happy, it will upset some as well. I won't spoil anything. you can see Marvel trying to steer the ship back to place, but for $6 idk if it was worth it.
I may keep buying for the covers as I am a sucker for those gimmicks, but if you havent been keeping up with all of marvel and you only have a specifc pocket of the universe this might not affect you.

It was weird. The opening is essentially Avengers: Stone Age, with Odin, Phoenix Force, Ghost Rider, Black Panther, Iron Fist, and Agamatto, the one the Orb is named for. Among other things, I don't buy there was Kung Fu in the Stone Age.
