Wonderful :) Is there a specific start date or is now okay?

message 3: by Natasa (new)

Natasa (natasa79) | 353 comments I did a search on this name but there are many books with this name. No author's name rings a bell sadly.

Natasa (natasa79) | 353 comments Thx Kasia! I love haunted house stories! Actually I'm reading The Banquet for the Damned at the moment (and few others) but I might join later.

Anytime Natasa, I'm juggling a few books as well but I've wanted to read The Elementals for years so I can't resist doing the buddy read... phew at least it's the weekend, makes finding reading time much easier :)

message 10: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Prologue. What the heck? Definitely has my attention!

message 11: by Natasa (new)

Natasa (natasa79) | 353 comments Lol there are so many books that are constantly catching my attention...that's the only reason why I'd love to live forever :)))

message 12: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments I totally agree!! Not enough time to read...like ever!

message 13: by Char (new)

Char | 17457 comments Whew! I had a long day with my mom and I just got a new phone, and I'm behind on my reading. I should be good for tomorrow though.
Thanks for sharing us off, Jon!

So...you'd become a vampire in order to read forever? LOL. (Drinking blood is just a downside...)

I just started this one, and...well, that's quite a family funerary custom. And that bird...Nails...hmmm

message 15: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Yeah, kinda blown away with the "custom." Wonder how true it is...

^ yes it was, I'm reading it slowly so I don't miss anything, something always seems to jump out of nowhere with this one :) what a great book, so glad we are reading it!

message 19: by Kirstin (new)

Kirstin | 417 comments Started this last night and made it to the end of chapter 3. (view spoiler)

message 20: by Char (new)

Char | 17457 comments Okay, I will be starting in a little while. Your comments have got me even more excited!!

message 21: by Char (new)

Char | 17457 comments I just read about the author. I had no idea about the screenplays he wrote. :)

Not at all, Layton.

Layton (thunderinourhearts) | 86 comments Thanks Kasia!

message 27: by Char (new)

Char | 17457 comments I'm glad you found us, Layton!! :)

So, I'm at about 20% of the book. I'm sort of bummed that this is a short one.
(view spoiler)

I'm betting that there are more family secrets to be discovered!

I'll take that bet!

message 29: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments If you like the southern fried taste of this book, please read The Blackwater series. He hits the nail on the head with the small town southern gossip and class lines. I think Blackwater is superior to Elementals, and I love Elementals.

message 30: by Layton (new)

Layton (thunderinourhearts) | 86 comments I'm halfway through the Blackwater series Tressa and I can't stop raving about it. I wish it was still in print so I could get new copies and wouldn't just have to settle for the kindle editions.

I really want to read the Blackwater series, but am hoping to find an omnibus edition. The Kindle serial is pricey, I think $4 an installment.

message 32: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Layton, so happy to hear you're enjoying Blackwater. I sometimes see the omnibus edition at UBS, and have seen the individual books here and there at UBS too. Whenever I run across them, I'm going to buy them so I can send them on to McDowell's fans.

message 33: by Layton (new)

Layton (thunderinourhearts) | 86 comments That is such a nice thing of you to do Tressa. His fans should be doing everything in their ability to spread word of how great his books are. And really Jon Recluse the books are worth forking over the four dollars for each volume. If you don't want to spend that much Amazon sells cheaper used copies as well.

message 34: by Kirstin (new)

Kirstin | 417 comments Thanks for the rec Tressa! I will be searching for those books at my UBS for sure.

Reading this book is reminding me of how I felt when I read We Have Always Lived in the Castle. Like I've just discovered a new fav book/author. The characters, the setting, the high creep factor. I'm loving it so much!

I am planning on reading his book The Amulet within the next few weeks, if anyone is interested in joining me?

message 37: by Kirstin (new)

Kirstin | 417 comments Sure, I'd have to order the book, but that's easy enough. :)

message 38: by Layton (new)

Layton (thunderinourhearts) | 86 comments I'd love to Charlene! I've had that book on my kindle for a year but I still haven't read it. I tried once but was turned of by the lack of dialogue in the first few chapters. Probably because that is my favorite thing about how McDowell writes; He can create really good conversations between characters.

message 39: by Char (new)

Char | 17457 comments That would be great, you guys! :)

I will try to read the Amulet with you as well, it's funny how you keep reading my mind about awesome books :P hopefully I can squeeze it in, it's a chunky read though! I will probably be reading it alongside The Strain which I want to read before the tv show comes out in mid July.

message 41: by Char (new)

Char | 17457 comments Oooh, I just read it, Kasia, and I thought it was pretty good. I hope you like it! :)

message 42: by Layton (new)

Layton (thunderinourhearts) | 86 comments I'm 20% in and loving this book. Big Barbara's dialogue is the best.

message 43: by Char (new)

Char | 17457 comments Layton, isn't she a riot? I have relatives like her, but they're New England-y, instead of Southern. :)

message 44: by Layton (new)

Layton (thunderinourhearts) | 86 comments Haha I love how dramatic she is. And I have relatives like her too. And since I am southern it makes sense. Oh, and by the way have you reached where they have arrived at Beldame yet?

message 45: by Char (new)

Char | 17457 comments No. they're on the way now.

message 46: by Layton (new)

Layton (thunderinourhearts) | 86 comments Oh, alright. I was a bit confused on the order of the houses.

McDowell is one of the handful of authors whose books I force on anyone within reach.

The Blackwater book has a similar Big Barbara character who is a hoot and someone you want to punch in the face every time she appears.

message 48: by Layton (new)

Layton (thunderinourhearts) | 86 comments Are you talking about Mary-Love Tressa?

message 49: by Addy (new)

Addy | 5111 comments Yes, I think she is! I've read the first in the Blackwater series and I love it! I have part II and one other. Im trying to find them at USB. So far I've found 3 in the series.

message 50: by Tressa (new)

Tressa (moanalisa) | 19903 comments Yes, Layton. She and Sister are such great characters, but they all are in Blackwater. Such a rich series with layers and layers of detailed storytelling. You just get encapsulated in their world.
