I'm flexible to start. I think it will be a while before I could get from the library and I'm happy to buy it on my kindle

I've got the start date set for August. What date works for everyone? BOMs are usually the 2nd, 12th and 22nd.

I tried to use the coupon and they wouldn't let me use it on a pre-order. I'm kind of bummed because the advertisement has it listed. I guess I'll have to get it from the store instead of online. :(

If people live in the SF Bay area --- she's going to be at Books, Inc in Palo Alto.

I guess this is an informal buddy read?? No schedule or questions?

I thought it was a really good conclusion to the series (though there were some parts that I thought dragged on). Being a science nerd, I actually really enjoyed the idea that they were going to serious analyze the "Creature chromosome" and learn from it. I love the way everything was tied together at the end.

I am glad that it answered most of the questions, but I also want to see what happens next, especially with the children. They were made up to be such a controversial issue, but I felt that they really didn't have too much of a role in the story.
I also liked that the politics of the creatures was explained more.

Chapters 1-5
Im a little late to the party! The paperback has been sitting here staring at me and keeps being put aside for smaller books, but I'm finally getting my skates on!
I am struggling a little to remember all the characters and how they all connect. A "cast of characters" and family tree at the front would've been useful! I'm intrigued as to where this book is headed. Seems like lots of family politics at the moment. Part of me hopes we get to time walk again :)

And Karen, the ebook has been staring at me on my nook for awhile and shorter books kept jumping in front as well. I am also struggling to remember everything that happened, though it's slowly coming back to me. A character list would've been extremely helpful.

I'm about to start chapter 10.
Did anyone else find the switch to Diana's first person POV surprising? I can't remember the other books doing that
I still don't really like how Matthew seems to dominate her, and interestingly she continues to keep secrets from him.
I am quite enjoying it and getting into the story more now that the characters have been re-introduced a little

There's a character list on her website.

It's never bothered me how dominant Matthew is - seems pretty standard for a vampire. But they keep mentioning his blood rage and how scary he is, but I haven't seen too much of that.
And I agree, they all seem to keep so many secrets.

I know he is a vampire and the whole dominant thing is because of that, but it has always gotten on my nerves. I guess because I hate the idea of a relationship like that, but also she is such a highly educated, bright woman, and I struggle to see her wanting to be in that kind of lopsided arrangement.
Although I guess that is where all these secrets some in, it is like she is asserting her authority in this passive aggressive manner.
Such a good point RebeccaS that they both want everything open, but both keep secrets!

I found that Matthew and Diane's relationship definitely evolved over time. I never found that he was overbearing at all. I found that they talked about him being overbearing and dominant more than he actually acted it out. And I loved (view spoiler)
On a side note, my daughter works in a genetics laboratory at Stanford, and I found all the genetics talk so fascinating. Loved it!!

The highly anticipated finale to the #1 New York Times bestselling trilogy that began with A Discovery of Witches
After traveling through time in Shadow of Night, the second book in Deborah Harkness’s enchanting series, historian and witch Diana Bishop and vampire scientist Matthew Clairmont return to the present to face new crises and old enemies. At Matthew’s ancestral home at Sept-Tours, they reunite with the cast of characters from A Discovery of Witches—with one significant exception. But the real threat to their future has yet to be revealed, and when it is, the search for Ashmole 782 and its missing pages takes on even more urgency. In the trilogy’s final volume, Harkness deepens her themes of power and passion, family and caring, past deeds and their present consequences. In ancestral homes and university laboratories, using ancient knowledge and modern science, from the hills of the Auvergne to the palaces of Venice and beyond, the couple at last learn what the witches discovered so many centuries ago.
With more than one million copies sold in the United States and appearing in thirty-eight foreign editions, A Discovery of Witches and Shadow of Night have landed on all of the major bestseller lists and garnered rave reviews from countless publications. Eagerly awaited by Harkness’s legion of fans, The Book of Life brings this superbly written series to a deeply satisfying close.
