short story about a baker's apprentice who wants to become an astronaut

Pretty sure the story was originally French. A boy wants to become an astronaut/cosmonaut and go to the moon in a rocket, which the story implies is now a somewhat common occurrence, but a baker talks him out of it. He might be the baker's apprentice?

I remember reading it in elementary/junior high, so late 90s early millenium, I think it was in a school anthology. It had a Jules Verne/HG Wells vibe to it, though I suspect the author was influenced by that early sci-fi rather than actually being a member of that generation.
