Sorry, just noticed you said "recent and contemporary"--does that mean the book should be set in the present day?
Gail Carriger's books, while set in a "historical" setting are very funny and are actually more paranormal steampunk than anything else (werewolves and ghosts and mad scientists, oh my.) Also vampires, but vampires with a twist. (Very few female vampires, and all of them are Queens and it's the females who are the only ones able to make more vampires.)
Er, can we all guess who has read everything that Gail's written? And I've enjoyed it all too. :o)
But don't expect anything even remotely like normal history--except for Queen Victoria, of course. What proper Steampunk novel would miss out on Her Royal Majesty?
