Getting stopped by the 'highway men' and finding that its for the box that Monte stole was interesting. As well as Percy's seizure and finding out that he has epilepsy. It was so surprising to me that he would be going to an asylum, but with the limited knowledge about his illness at that time it does make sense. Felicity does keep throwing little surprises my way though - that girl would kill it if she were to find a way to practice medicine! (hide spoiler)]

I am listening to the audio book and I honestly think I would have a hard time if I were actually reading the physical book. The revelations that have been made and Henry's little stint in prison to get information definitely seems to have them running in the right direction, but Percy seems a little unsure. Henry is set on curing Percy while Percy kind of seems to be questioning just living with his condition, but wanting a way to avoid the institution. Felicity is still such a fun amazing character - I'm super excited to read on and see what happens with these pirates! (hide spoiler)]

Like the descriptive words and truly painting a picture for the reader, but I really wasn’t too into it until about the last 1/4 of the book. Once they were headed to the island I was chomping at the bit to see how everything would go down! Felicity continues to amaze me - her medical interest definitely helped her out in many ways throughout the book. I am SOOO excited to follow her into the next book. Honestly - felicity and then the fact that Percy and Monte came together at the end were really the only things I can say I loved about this book. I didn’t mind listening to it, but can’t say it’s something I’d randomly recommend to a friend 🤷🏻‍♀️ (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 1-6 (view spoiler)[ THAT KISS ... made me so happy and 5 seconds later so mad! I thought we were going places and then it blew up in my face. Also I really didn't like how Monty left the ball with that girl Jeanne but as he was leaving turned back to see if Percy was watching. I really want them to make up and TALK because if the kiss wasn't obvious enough they have major feelings for each other. But on the plus side I am really enjoying Felicity's character! I'm only six chapters in but I feel like this book is going to be a journey! (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 1-6 (view spoiler)[Okay, I have a lot to say. Monty..... sometimes I like him. I think he is amazing. Other times I thinks he is a complete douche bag and I kinda hate him. I love the Olden Europe setting so much! I was a little confused that he and Percy weren't already together? They woke up in the same bed, I get that they were drunk but it still seemed like they were an item. Then I realized they weren't..... and THAT KISS OMG AND I WAS ABOUT READY TO MURDER MONTY FOR WHAT HE SAID AFTER IT.... GOD HE IS AN IDIOT. They way Monty talked to the Duke of Bourbon..... if that was him trying his best I am truly scared for him.... the part with him and Jeanne was a little weird. 1. if you want to steal something to cause an annoyance WHY DID YOU PICK AN OLD TRINKET BOX? COME ON! LAME. 2. Who the heck even is Jeanne? Why does she have the keys to the Duke of Bourbon apartments? What is her position? I want to know more about Jeanne. Then they way Monty acted towards Percy and Felicity.... I'm not even gonna go there. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 6-11 (view spoiler)[So, Monty just got everyone almost killed for stealing that trinket box and PLOT TWIST it's not just a trinket box! So they are on the run now, that always makes an interesting story. I want to talk about Percy though. Poor Percy. I knew he was having a seizure. Fun fact, my younger sister has epilepsy, so seizures are nothing new to me. Luckily she hasn't had one in years, she is on a great medicine that blocks them I think? Anyways, seizures aren't new to me. Good job to Felicity for turning him on his side and holding him steady. When Percy tells Monty about him having epilepsy and Monty's reaction was TERRIBLE! I swear I love this book so much already, Monty just gets on my nerves a little bit, but I'll love him anyways. It's very interesting to see how Epilepsy is treated way back then, I feel really bad for Percy that the medicine he needs hasn't been invented yet. I have an inkling that Percy is not going to end up in an Insane Asylum, taking a wild guess there.... I've never really read about a character that has epilepsy before, I like it. I really find that part of the story fascinating and I can't wait to read more! I realize almost everything I have said about Monty has been negative but I do like his character. I think there is so much room for development, and HE IS SUCH A DRAMA KING I LOVE IT. 11 chapters in and I already know I love it. I also love Felicity's character. I love everything so much even though some of Monty's....... Montyness is very annoying, nobody's perfect. (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 6-17 (view spoiler)[ OMG so much has happened and I don't know where to start with attempting to break down everything going through my head! First, I 100% did not see them getting pulled over and almost killed but having read about Monty's character up to that point I feel like I should have seen it coming? Monty's character up to that point was really annoying me. He was being a complete jerk and I hated how he was consistently rude to Felicity and Percy but then didn't understand why they wouldn't just be on his side for everything? But with that being said I feel like Monty's character up to chapter 17 has really developed so far and I am really starting to enjoy him and like my reading buddy above said MONTY IS SUCH A DRAMA KING AND I TOO LOVE IT! I'm excited to see where his character goes in the upcoming chapters. Second, Felicity is kind of really badass? I love everything about her. Period. Third, I want to just hug Percy and never let him go. I want Monty to hug Percy and never let him go because honestly these two really just need to be together. I feel like they just complement each other and can handle anything life throws at them together... is that too cheesy? I feel like a hopeless romantic when I read about them!! (hide spoiler)]

Chapters 11-17 (view spoiler)[OMG, reading buddy.. Melanie... Idk what to call you I'm sorry #awkward, I totally agree with you, so much has happened and I don't know where to start! Monty in a "dress" (or whatever he was wearing the resembled a dress) is something I didn't know I needed until it happened. I'm glad Monty is trying to help Percy in any way he can, I think he is helping more than he realizes. "How are you feeling?" I ask, ... before I say something infinitely stupider. ... "Better." Good. That's....... good." #relatable. I swear I usually don't use hashtags but... I promise. Monty's awkwardness is so relatable. I also totally agree, I love Felicity so much! I can't wait to read A Woman's Guide to Petticoats and Piracy, do you plan on reading it fairly soon after a Gentleman's Guide? I think returning the box to Spain was a very good idea. I'm surprised Felicity didn't agree. MONTY AND PERCY AREN'T FIGHTING ANYMORE i'M SO HAPPY, BUT WHY DID HE SAY "So lone as you don't go falling in love with me" AND HOW COULD MONTY NOT SEE THAT PERCY ALREADY IS IN LOVE WITH HIM?? I THINK IT'S FAIRLY OBVIOUS, RIGHT?? That scene when Monty flirts with the bank teller person, I loved it. I was smiling the entire time. I love romantic manipulative scenes. I also love scenes where people get jealous because IT'S SO AWKWARD and I'm so sad Percy and Felicity couldn't hear or see what he was doing (at least I think they couldn't) and Percy didn't get jealous because I would have loved that, but it's fine. Percy better not go to Holland. I don't think he will, but he better not. I just want to talk about the scene on the roof where Percy tells Monty how he is really doing and says "That's how I'm feeling. Aren't you glad you asked?" and Monty was just like "yes, I am very glad you asked because i care about you and want to help you in any way possible." I'm kidding, he left everything out but 'yes' BUT I KNOW HE WAS THINKING IT! And when Percy asks Monty to lie down with him and Monty is freaking out inside AND HE THINKS PERCY IS JUST BEING A FRIEND, LIKE ARE YOU DAFT??? IT'S OBVIOUS HE LIKES YOU TOOOOOOO! I don't really want to get into the whole thing in Barcelona with the box cause I don't really know how I feel about it. The bookstore scene with the leg, just, I don't know! I don't know why Percy was rubbing his leg against the "table leg" which happened to be Monty. Personally, I feel like this would be something that would happen to me, except I don;t know why I would want to rub my leg up against a table leg so.... and just the entire part about him sharing a bed with Percy, like just get over it. The opening scene is you waking up with Percy and being completely normal but still pinning over him, I mean I get you guys kissed but I don't know. Last thing, when Felicity says "Ladies don't get the luxury of being squeamish about blood." I have to disagree. I did pass out when I had my 2nd period because my mom was so nice, she didn't tell me it got heavier. so when I woke up, THERE WAS A LOT OF BLOOD. After that, I was fine. I don't really get squeamish about THAT blood, but I do get squeamish and pass out with other blood. It's kinda weird because gory movies I can watch without a problem, it's fake, but a lot of my own blood, that isn't my period does bother me... a lot. So, I have to disagree with Felicity on that. So, this was a little bit all over the place and messy, I'm sorry I just had a lot of feeling. Please forgive all the grammatical mistakes and such that would usually drive me crazy. Chapters 17-23 (view spoiler)[ I felt like there was too much happening to not stop and comment here even though I was going to continue on but here we go. I HAVE SO MANY FEELINGS RIGHT NOW! WHERE TO EVEN BEGIN?!?!?! Maybe I'll start with the pirates but also Monty and Percy are OFFICIALLY A THING! at least to me they are. But first pirates! So they couldn't make one trip without some type of issue. I totally agree with Monty that they've already dealt with the highwaymen they most definitely do not need to deal with pirates! I'm almost at the point where I fear that they aren't going to make it to the island in time!! I'm patiently waiting for Felicity to come up with some amazing plan for them to escape. Monty crying broke my heart in two! The abuse Monty has suffered in this book makes me want to punch everyone who has ever laid a hand on him in the face! UHGGGG! I'm happy that Percy was there for him though. Percy is the only person who I think knows the full extent of what Monty has been through and the fact that after all of that and Helena also hitting him that he clung to Percy and let Percy hold him says a lot. He loves and trusts Percy so much. Even when Monty and Percy are cuddling under the bridge and Monty says his jaw is throbbing where it is pushed against Percy's shoulder, he doesn't move because being held by Percy is all he wants at that moment AND I JUST LOVE THEM SO MUCH! My heart hurts because I just want them to be happy! Also, Felicity making out with Dante in the hallway and the boys running out with a kettle and a sword as weapons had me laughing so hard HAHA! Anyways, I need them to escape these pirates and get to Venice pronto because they are starting to stress me out. It's like one of those scenes in the movies when people are on a time limit for something but there is always that one person who stops for something or stops to do something and you're just sitting there yelling at the tv like YOU DO NOT HAVE TIME FOR THIS! Chapters 17-The End (I don't actually remember how many chapters there are, oops) (view spoiler)[Okay, so I finished this book a while ago but I kinda distanced myself from it before I wrote this and I just want to say I LOVE THIS BOOK. It has it's problems, every book does, and tbh I didn't care the the entirety of the Alchemist plot. Just that whole thing didn't interest me. It wasn't BAD, I just did not care for it. I love pirates, if anyone knows any books about pirates I need them now. I thought the ending was really predictable but it was still nice and good. When everyone was in the cave church place with the Heart and the Duke told Monty to cut it out his response was me, it wasn't even that funny but I love it. Personally, I wasn't a huge fan of that scene and how it played out. When Felicity volunteered to cut out the heart I totally expected her to take the knife and do some cool thing with it and kill the Duke or something even though he had a gun. That would have been great. Instead, she just cut out the Heart and Helena burned it. I feel like that scene had a lot more potential but that's fine. With distancing myself from the story, I definitely see a lot more problems or things I didn't really like but I did really love the story. I can't wait for the 2nd one because Felicity and pirates? Is it just me or does anyone else actually hear this book narrated in Hugh Grant's voice in my head. Seriously, if he were a couple decades younger and this movie went to film I couldn't actually picture anyone else in the lead.

I knew the book had LGBTQ themes in it but I was surprised by (view spoiler)[ 1. how quickly and how often Henry is amorously involved with someone (I was reading this at work so that was a little eye-rolling) and 2. how prevalent this theme is; I had been under the impression that it was more a side story than the main line. I will admit to laughing out loud when Henry got caught outside in his altogether, although I suppose if I were either of his companions I would not have thought it so funny. (hide spoiler)] I tried to read this when it first came out and didn't actually get more than a few pages in, but I'm enjoying it much more this time around.

Wow, only halfway through this book and I feel like so much has happened! I love that it's turned into such an adventure. However, it was a sobering reminder of (view spoiler)[ what people with epilepsy suffered in those days and what their lives were like. For a fine, intelligent, cultured young man -- really young -- to be doomed to spend his life in a sanatorium... which were so horrible then, too ... is just unthinkable today. What a waste. Not that I think this will actually happen.

Yes the brother and sister are shady -- pretty sure their father isn't actually even dead, so I'm looking forward to how that whole mystery pans out. Can't actually figure out why I didn't like this book the first time I tried it -- obviously I didn't give it enough of a chance. (hide spoiler)]

Well... that was quite a read, especially there at the end. I had no idea we'd be encountering a touch of horror, or really that this would turn into something of a (view spoiler)[ pirate adventure, but there you have it. I really liked Monty's growth as a character, and the things he has learned by the end...even losing his ear seems a bit fitting as he sobers into a more responsible young man who's able to function without just going out and getting himself into trouble. I also found the history of his father incredibly fitting and I wouldn't mind seeing a closer encounter between the two of them over it someday. (hide spoiler)] I'll be looking forward to Felicity's escapades in the next book.

they're going to return the key to his owner hoping he will have a cure for percy's epilepsy. i'm not sure what kind of cure they will have for that.

i love the conversation between felicity and monty about his sexuality, how she doesn't understand it and why he doesn't just stop being attracted to boys, and she know he like percy!

they finally opened the box and got the lazarus key, it's for the tomb of mateu's wife, percy will have to kill her and eat her heart so he can be healed. i don't think he will do that. felicity is right, monty should ask percy what he wants to do.

Just finished ch 10, stopping here for the time being to get caught up on a couple of other br's.

(view spoiler)[ Monty makes me want to grab his shoulders and shake some sense into him lol. However idiotic he can be though, the things he says/does makes me laugh out loud. Percy having epilepsy was a surprise and is heartbreaking, reading about how his family is treating him for it. I adore Felicity and her sneaky ways of studying medicine!! (hide spoiler)]

This has turned into much more of an adventure story than I expected but I am really enjoying it!

they FINALLY said how they feel about each other!

felicity is a badass, she sewed her own hand!
scipio teaching monty how to swing and telling him the next someone take a swing at you, you swing back made me teary, monty flinch at everything, i want to see monty stand up to his father.
i love that the book talk about slavery and how it's like to be black or a women at that period of time.
