Now when we read The Cabinet of Curiosities, I'll be exited for a kick ass chick named Nora Kelly!

Discussed Thunderhead and The Ice Limit with my Father-In-Law last night (he has read both) and he agrees that they are on par with each other for story and suspense!

That's great! If we're reading it between 4 and 5 of Pendergast, we're really not far from getting to it, too.

Ha!!! I so glad we "talked" you into reading The Ice Limit. ;)
Don't swerve and hit someone!

I definitely think Terry and I should read it before Brimstone, right?
I can't wait to read it because if it's anything like Thunderhead, I'm going to really enjoy it.

I just gave another GR friend recommendations for Preston/Childs. I'm getting their names out there as well because these books are just entertaining, suspenseful and FUN!

Nope, we're not far at all. I think we should try to get in a Preston/Childs book in every month. Thoughts?
I'm also game to read Cabinet right after Thunder this month since I don't have much planned.
I'm reading GoT right now but it's a long slow journey for me. I'm fine with that. I'm going to use those books as my filler between the BR books.

Sounds good to me, Ginger. I'm good to start Cabinet right after Thunder too. I'm starting Ruin next week which is a long slow one for me also, but I'm good otherwise.

Glad you're enjoying GoT! I'm one of those people who are holding out on watching the show until the books are out, so I'm missing out on all of the hype right now.

Great!! We'll start it right afterwards. Woohoo

Well, you're going to be waiting a LOOOOOOONG time. The theory is GRRM might die first before he puts out the last two books. hahaha!

I know it :( Honestly, I'm the only person I know personally who is holding out this way, too. I just hate having the books spoiled by what might happen in the show, when it is such a good series and so much depends on surprise connections and puzzling references. I'm holding out hope that Brandon Sanderson jumps in and finishes it for him, lol.

Hahaha!!
Well, GRRM does have the book covers and titles.
The Winds of Winter (A Song of Ice and Fire, #6) by George R.R. Martin and A Dream of Spring (A Song of Ice and Fire, #7) by George R.R. Martin so hopefully it will happen soon but I'm not holding my breath.
Good for you on holding out though. I'm sure it hasn't been easy since the HBO series is so incredible.
But just think, the end of the world could happen with North Korea in a year and you would never enjoy GoT?!! ;) hahaha

Haha, ain't that the truth! I did watch the first several seasons of the show until they caught up to the books, and it was really good. I may give in here sooner than later it seems (before the war I hope). Having those covers just makes it that much more frustrating!

Matthew (funkygman007) | 1005 comments I think that right before Brimstone is a good place for The Ice Limit - if I recall, the references from The Ice Limit in the Diogenes trilogy that are applicable don't show up until the second book, but it is probably weird to start a trilogy, switch to another book, and then come back!

Believe it or not, I have not yet read or seen any Game of Thrones! I have all the books in paperback and I have for years. I too am holding out until the whole series is out because I hate to start a series and then the author takes forever and I forget what is happening (I started The Dark Tower series when only the first 4 books were out and at the time it was something like 7 years between books!

I keep hearing and seeing Sanderson mentioned. If I wanted to check him out - where should I start?

Well, it is nothing like Thunderhead . . . but it is just as good! :) The only similarity is the Preston and Child feel and the awesome suspense!

I often try and figure out what each author brings to the table and think, based on their solo writing, Preston is more history/archaeology and Child is more Science/Sci-fi. So, if I had to guess Preston wrote most of Thunderhead and Child wrote most of The Ice Limit (check out their solo writings and read the descriptions - you will see what I mean!)

I've wondered who was writing what. They do a great job of collaborating because the books have all felt consistent throughout. Their solo works do look good, too. I figure I'm going to have to get to them eventually as well.

Ginger | 3910 comments Matthew wrote: "I think that right before Brimstone is a good place for The Ice Limit - if I recall, the references from The Ice Limit in the Diogenes trilogy that are applicable don't show up until the second boo..."

Actually it wasn't weird switching from Pendergast to Thunderhead. It's the same type of writing and I have Smithback in the book. I really didn't have an issue with it at all.

I completely get it with GoT! Since I've already committed to the TV series, I'm in like flynn and will likely be one of the millions waiting for the last books in the series, way after the HBO series is over. :(

Okay, *cracking my knuckles*, Sanderson!! Here we go!
I would suggest starting Mistborn because the series is almost complete. I think there is book #7 left. Buuuut, you can easily read books 1-3 and stop if you wanted. I believe books 4-7 is years later in the epic story. Seriously Matthew, I would not regret reading these books. I was absolutely blown away with this series!!

You could do The Stormlight Archive series as well but he only has two books out, one at the end of the year (#3) and 7 more to go on that series. And the good thing is he's not like GRRM. He actually writes and publishes his books on a regular timeline. ;) haha

Terry, do you have any ideas different then mine on regards to Sanderson?

You said exactly what I was thinking, Ginger. I've only read the first 3 of the Mistborn books, and I thought they were great. A pretty original story, I thought. I'm also one book away from getting to the last three books in the Wheel of Time series. Those are the three that Sanderson finished when Robert Jordan passed away. Those get great reviews also.

On GoT, it is such a pain waiting! I fully get not starting the series until those other books get here. I don't do rereads very often, but I'm going to have to go back and reread that series if the new ones ever get here, just due to the wait.

Matthew (funkygman007) | 1005 comments Thanks for the suggestions - better go and beef up my TBR!

Does he ever do solo, or is it all series?

Either of you ever read Raymond Feist? I am about 14 books into his 30 book Epic series and he is fantastic (it is groups of smaller 3 or 4 book series all in the same world).

Nope, he's a series man. I love series but solo books are so nice. One and done. Series are such a commitment so I really have to love the 1st book to continue on.

No, I haven't read Feist. I'll check it out!! Thanks for the rec.

Elantris is a solo he wrote, although I do think he plans for something else in the future with it. I have the book, but haven't read it. Ratings are good for it too.

I read The Riftwar Saga books of his a long time ago, probably back in the '80s, but not lately. Seems like he's gotten popular again.
