Great!! Another one that makes sense to read before? We're going to need a Preston/Child reading chart before long. haha

I'm up to ch16, so pretty close.

No kidding, Ginger. So Ice Limit goes after Still Life with Crows and before Brimstone in the Pendergast timeline - I'm glad Matthew is forging the way for us on this!

Yes, I'm getting out the flow chart right now! ;) hahaha!

Actually, The Ice Limit is a little different. It is definitely before Brimstone, but as far as I can tell, the events in it do not have any relation to the Pendergast story line. The only connection is that a key player in The Ice Limit is a key player in the Diogenes trilogy.

However, you would only need to read The Ice Limit to get the background on the key player. Not reading The Ice Limit should not change your enjoyment or understanding of the Pendergast series for good or for bad (unlike missing out on Thunderhead)

I know - complicated, right!? I am glad I can lay the groundwork!

I also found out just yesterday that a minor character in Mount Dragon plays a bit part throughout the Pendergast series.

Complicated is right. I was just reading the description of Mount Dragon. It sounds quite good even without the tie-in!

Terry | 5368 comments So, what other series would you compare these Lincoln/Child books too, not so much in terms of the Pendergast character, but more in the mix of science, supernatural, history and archeology? Anything come to mind? I've read two of James Rollins Sigma Force books (Sandstorm and Map of Bones), and I'd consider them close. Michael Crichton's books probably fit, although I've only read Timeline.

I actually like reading the book first for the introduction of the character, in this case it's Nora Kelly. I feel like when we read The Cabinet of Curiosities, I'll enjoy it more.
I'm guessing that The Ice Limit has a character in it before the Diogenes trilogy? *hint, hint* hahaha

Terry | 5368 comments Ginger wrote: "Matthew wrote: "Terry wrote: "No kidding, Ginger. So Ice Limit goes after Still Life with Crows and before Brimstone in the Pendergast timeline - I'm glad Matthew is forging the way for us on this!..."

I agree!

Ginger | 3910 comments Riptide also looks good!! Argh matey!!
I'll have to read this one for sure since it contains pirate treasure.

I did get confirmation that Riptide has no tie in to Pendergast!

I have heard that Clive Cussler is like this, but I have never read any of his.

Ginger | 3910 comments Matthew wrote: "I did get confirmation that Riptide has no tie in to Pendergast!"

Thank God! hahaha

Terry | 5368 comments I ended up stopping at ch21 today. The canyon country where they are hiking here sounds so remote and unexplored. I would love to see it in person, but it does sound rough. Have you ever seen cliff dwellings before? I visited Mesa Verde when I was a kid, but I hardly remember it now, lol. I'd love to visit some again sometime.

Terry | 5368 comments Ch21 (view spoiler)

Great! I got to the start of Ch 24 last night. I think I might get some GoT reading in today as well, along with keeping to our reading pace.

Thanks!! I'll still read some of Thunderhead as well. I'm looking forward to if they find Quivira.
Not doing much today since I got a cold. Who get's sick right in the middle of summer?! This girl! hahaha

Well that's no good! Hope it doesn't last long. Nothing much going on here today either because it's supposed to rain all day. I may take another trip to the bookstore though to see what other Preston/Child books they have. I might grab Riptide and Mount Dragon if I find them.

Ginger | 3910 comments Terry wrote: "Ginger wrote: "Terry wrote: "Ginger wrote: "Terry wrote: "I ended up stopping at ch21 today. The canyon country where they are hiking here sounds so remote and unexplored. I would love to see it in..."

Awesome! I had some Amazon credits so I just bought Still Life With Crows for free this morning. I think I'll get Riptide, Mount Dragon and The Ice Limit as well. hahaha!!
I mean, I've loved the writing and story telling of Preston/Childs so far with three books. I know I won't be disappointed even if one of those books could be a dud. I'm sure the plot will still be cool!! :D

I hope so as well! I thought my throat hurting was because of all the smoke. There's a ton of smoke in the Seattle area because of the BC fires. It's so bad that our air quality is worse then Beijing right now. But nope, it's a stupid cold.
Thanks for the well wishes and hope you can find some good book deals!!

Ginger | 3910 comments Okay, just bought Riptide and Ice Limit. Mount Dragon was more then what I usually like to spend on Kindle books. I'll see if I can find it in a used book store one day.

Awesome! It's fun to have all of these to read. I'm looking forward to continuing on with them. I think you're right that we can't go wrong with them. All of their descriptions sound good, and the writing style is easy to read. If I pick up Riptide, we'll have all the same so far, lol.

That sounds crazy with all the smoke! Is that a normal occurrence for you there, or different this year? Hopefully it gets taken care of soon.

Great!! I'm glad I bought them all. I haven't been disappointed so far with their books.

No, not at all. In the 20 years that I've lived up here, I've never seen it like this. The fires in British Columbia are super bad and the weather is pushing the smoke south. It's kind of like when a volcano goes off, you'll see smoke and soot for miles.
Here's a picture online that I found of what it looks like right now.

Terry | 5368 comments Omg, that is crazy! When I was in college, we used to get smoke in the fall when they'd burn the nearby prairies, but nothing like that.

Ginger | 3910 comments Terry wrote: "Omg, that is crazy! When I was in college, we used to get smoke in the fall when they'd burn the nearby prairies, but nothing like that."

It's so crazy! We all thought it was smog since we haven't had rain in over a month but nope, it's smoke. I hope BC can get it contained just because forest fires are so dangerous. We had a bunch up here in the last few years. They are so deadly, destructive and hard to contain.

Matthew (funkygman007) | 1005 comments So far, I have read 13 or so Preston and Child books, an my least favorite (but still great) were Reliquary and Wheel of Darkness. So, yeah, pretty much any Preston and Child is a good investment!

Terry | 5368 comments Have you read to the end of ch24 yet Ginger? (view spoiler)

Ginger | 3910 comments Terry wrote: "Have you read to the end of ch24 yet Ginger? [spoilers removed]"

Me too!! I just got to the end of ch24. Wow, I wish I could see a visual of this. I'm thinking that it's so far in the cliff at an incline that you just can't see it below.
Very cool chapter!

Matthew (funkygman007) | 1005 comments I tried to picture this for a long time too. What I pictured was a opening positioned in such a way you cannot see it from above or below, but only from the canyon wall across from it.

I wish I could be in your heads and try to picture what you are "seeing"

Terry | 5368 comments It sounds so cool, but hard to visualize how all those angles would work out, especially as big as it is supposed to be, too. To imagine that there were people who lived their whole lives in places like that is amazing, too.

I know! You would have to have no fear of heights for sure to live that type of life. I'm glad you've seen Mesa Verde. I would love to see that one day!

That's about the sum of it. They made it too where you can't see it from above or below, just from across. Now to figure out how to get up there. o.O

Ginger | 3910 comments Ch 31 - (view spoiler)

Matthew (funkygman007) | 1005 comments Your 2nd half hunch . . . Pretty much any Preston/Child book. There is one where the climactic final scene starts about 2/3 of the way in and goes all the way to the end. In the audiobook it was 4 1/2 hours long!

Wow, 2/3rds is crazy!
I love how they establish the plot and the lead up to the action. Such great writers. They suck you in!

Still feeling like crap but I did take today off from work. Hope the extra rest will help me get over this upper respiratory infection.
How far are you in the book? I don't want to read to fast today since I have the day off.

Sorry your still feeling bad! Hope you can sleep it off today.

I stopped last night at ch32, and today is a bear for work, so I'll probably only read a couple of chapters tonight.

ANALOGY TIME!

Thunderhead is to archaeology as The Ice Limit is to science

Nice, Matthew. If Ice Limit is anything as good as Thunderhead, definitely looking forward to getting to it.

I'm getting there. It's a slow slog trying to get over this shit. I did go into work today so hoping I'm over the hump now. Glad you are catching up to me! I'm waiting until you get to Ch 60 before I start reading like a fiend again.
I've been reading GoT while waiting and that's been great. A lot like the HBO series but much more detail and characterization!
