Well, I love, love, LOVE the Hunger Games series and Divergent, which are both faction-related stories about girls who defy the norm, goes up against the ruling classes change everything.
Sometimes a bit, yes, since certain genres like Urban Fantasy typically follow a lot of the same guidelines and traits in the main character.
I just recently found myself going back looking at my books wondering where have I read this? But in answer to your question yes that has happened to me so I guess we are weird instead of uniquely weird.
Could that just be part of switching from one to the other? I was reading both Trainspotting and On Basilisk Station recently and whenever I switched the people on the spaceship would talk in really thick scottish accents.
Dislike series in general because I have hard time remembering names (mostly just don't care enough) and hard time remembering what happened in the book before, especially if I have to wait for the next book in the series to come out, so I tend to avoid series, but yes, it did happen once or twice actually. I can't completely remember what were the books tho (think it was Vampire Academy and one series about demi gods but can't remember the name of that one), but I do remember they were so similar in almost everything that I later couldn't tell which one is which.

I've read both books/series you've mentioned and can't find anything similar to them.
That secret society has been done a lot, but way before Harry Potter. Like Lara, I don't find similarities between the two series beyond that basic plotline, which is in most fantasy, YA and sometimes horror books to a degree.
