message 1: by Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications (last edited Jul 19, 2017 03:35PM) (new)

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments I'm looking for a rec. I'm in the mood for something dark and dirty, but not evil. I'd prefer M/M but will settle for F/M if it's along the lines of these books.

Bad Things by Varian Krylov The Tied Man (The Tied Man, #1) by Tabitha McGowan Enslaved (The Life of Anna, #1) by Marissa Honeycutt

Anyone have any suggestions?

message 2: by [deleted user] (new)

Not really my bailiwick.

I have a couple unreads though that may fit?

Mindf*ck. I think dark or maybe just anti hero. I got it to get out of a slump, but everything fell victim.
Hold Me Down by Sara Taylor Woods. I can not remember why I got it but then saw it pop up under bdsm.
Didnt I Warn You by Amber Bardan. Comes up under dark too. Not sure how dark. She has a new one that hot some good reviews.
Dark Mafia Prince again not sure how dark.
Cottonwood I think was dark but in different way.

All but Didnt I Warn You are loanable if you want one.

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

Hmm. Land of the Beautiful Dead may fit better. Though maybe i like C a bit better.

Not sure but they both left me feeling dark.

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments hmmm R. Lee Smith does write dark but does she write dirty?

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

Lol. True it is a distinction. Probably not in the way you are thinking.

message 6: by Jan (new)

Jan (jan130) Oh yeah she writes dirty. Books like Heat and The Scholomance might fill the brief. I dnf'ed both mind you, but mainly becos they were too dark. Gann is the only one of hers I actually finished. I see another one of hers, Olivia, is called 'erotic horror'. Hmmmm. Not sure whether that's what you were after. But Heat is sci-fi.

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments I read Heat. I liked it but it's kinda evil. I'm looking for dark & dirt without the horror.

message 8: by JudyCa (new)

JudyCa | 1709 comments Karina Halle can also write some dark & dirty...
Dirty Angels
Black Hearts duet
The Artists trilogy (I haven't read this one yet)
**all three of these connect in some way

message 9: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments Pepper Winters does pretty good dark and dirty, usually with an HEA at the end. So is Skye Warren.

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments Really? I wouldn't have thought any of those authors wrote dark. Thanks ladies.

message 11: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 2430 comments Fabi, I bet Ela has some good recs. I think she is into that type of read. Maybe check out her shelves?

message 12: by Grey (new)

Grey | 2385 comments Mod
Oh yeah... Pepper Winters is real dark. Tears of Tess was excellent.

Aleatha Romig is pretty dark too. Pam Godwin. Pen Douglas, TM Frazier...

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments Thanks for all the author suggestions ladies.

message 14: by Ela (new)

Ela | 4291 comments *rubs hands together* I love dark but like you hate the horror that a lot of times the author omits in the blurbe! Ker Dukey and K. Webster are hit and miss with the horror aspect in their books book Ker is a whole new level of dark! D. Sidebottom (sp?) is another one who rocks and too tangles with Ker. BUT I love Pam and Pepper books! Her Masters Courtesan was pretty fucked up I think by Lily White.

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments Thanks Ela! I'm going through your shelf right now. :-)

message 17: by Ela (last edited Jul 20, 2017 06:32AM) (new)

Ela | 4291 comments MY PLEASURE! Just let me know what type of dark you are looking for and I'll point you in that direction!

Also, I'm revising my dark shelf as it seems I was missing LOTS of books from that category...

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments TBH I don't read a lot of dark. I don't like reading about women or children as victims. I don't like power exchanges either so BDSM stories don't work for me.

I'm so difficult!

The ones I've enjoyed are the ones with a male MC. Like the ones I listed in my msg. LoA has a female protagonist but there's a PNR aspect to it and men portrayed as victims as well. Even so, it was very difficult for me to read.

Every so often I get a hankering to read something really intense. :-/

message 19: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments Fabi, when you go to Bad Things on Goodreads, to the side are a bunch of recommendations for dark M/M books. This one looks like one you'd like. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

message 20: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments And I thought it was odd you wanted a female protagonist. I remember just because in this situation we're exact opposites. :)

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments Nope, never said I wanted a female protagonist, certainly not a female victim. I would prefer an M/M. But I'll take a strong female lead in a pinch.

I've looked through GRs suggestions. They didn't appeal to me which is why I posted here. I have tons of great suggestions now. :-)

I'll look at your link next. Thanks!!!

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments Tessa, I know you haven't read the other two, but did you read The Tied Man with us a couple of years ago?

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments Just looked at your link Tessa. I went ahead and added it to my tbr and downloaded a sample. I'm a little worried because some reviews are not entirely happy with the ending. We'll see. ;-)

message 24: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments lol Well, with Bad Things, there were some other choices too. :D

And nope, I DNF'd The Tied Man. I honestly don't like it when for whatever reason, the man is submissive or the victim. It just creeps me out and makes me feel like crap.

message 25: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Aiello (lisaaiello) | 2460 comments Well I can certainly tell you that what I'm reading now is very dirty and dark - not sure if it's what you are looking for, Fabi. It's The Red by Tiffany Reisz. If you don't feel like purchasing it and you belong to NetGalley, it looks like it's still available under the Read Now, which means you don't have to be approved.

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments Tessa wrote: "lol Well, with Bad Things, there were some other choices too. :D

Yup! Exactly the opposite of me. If I change the word "man" to "woman" then that's exactly how I feel reading the regular "dark" reads.

But hey! I think you picked a winner from the GR suggestions. I added it to my tbr and have already gotten feedback from another M/M reader/reviewer telling to read it.

Is the victim female or male?

Yeah! I hope you do enjoy it. I love the GR recommendation thing. It helps when I'm looking for something like what I've enjoyed before. That's how I've found a lot of the PNR books I have.

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments I've looked through them before but I'm not sure I've ever picked a book out of them. I tend to look through my friend's shelves first. LOL! I'm nosy like that.

Female, Fabi - I wish I could hand you up a M/M, LOL

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments Thanks Lisa. I don't mind an F/M as long as it's not the F who's the victim. :-/ But...I have read quite a few of them and enjoyed them. I have about 30 books in my 'dark' shelf.

I'm still rifling through Ela's too. shshsh, don't tell her. ;-)

message 32: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments lol She'd probably be so happy!

message 33: by Ela (new)

Ela | 4291 comments Of course I'm happy but will be really sad if Fabi ends up not liking my favorites... which is a lot them.

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments Ela wrote: "Of course I'm happy but will be really sad if Fabi ends up not liking my favorites... which is a lot them."

awww, I will LOVE your favorites (even if I don't like them)
;-)

Just teasing!

I wonder how many 'darks' we've read in common? I think you're the only other reader I know that enjoys them as much as I do.

I thought Lisa was a fan too and what about Jean??? No????

message 36: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Aiello (lisaaiello) | 2460 comments I love me a dark read - I like to be shocked, reading from behind my hands covering my eyes, jaw dropped open. Apparently I'm gonna have to stalk both your and Ela's shelves a little closer, eh?

I love a dark read, just dark reads opposite of yours. Lol

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments Do ya'll ever go to your friends page in your profile and just look at what everyone is reading right now?

I think that's the coolest thing ever.

message 39: by Ela (new)

Ela | 4291 comments Yup! Legal stalking!

message 40: by JudyCa (new)

JudyCa | 1709 comments I love it dark...agreeing with what Lisa said above :) I love stalking peoples current reads!

Ela | 4291 comments How about a Dark Buddy Read???

message 42: by Grey (new)

Grey | 2385 comments Mod
I'm totally in.

message 43: by Ela (last edited Jul 21, 2017 11:36AM) (new)

Ela | 4291 comments Ok so Fabi should pick, right?

Fabi, no pressure!

message 44: by Melinda (new)

Melinda Ruyten | 1027 comments Fabi, have you tried It ain't you babe by Tillie Cole.
It is really good.i read it a couple of years ago. It's not m/m but sort of dark, yes dark.

message 45: by JudyCa (new)

JudyCa | 1709 comments Ela wrote: "How about a Dark Buddy Read???"

I'd be in for a dark BR :)

*nods* or maybe we gave her too many suggestions and she's having too much fun, *giggle*

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments Fabi is a big ball of nerves looking away while reading nonstop.

Tessa nailed it with her "out of the blue' REC.

I'm dying. My stomach is one big ball of twisted up guts.

It's taken me this long because I actually tried a different one before Don't..., but it was shite. Then I had to read an ARC before I could try this one.

There are several books in this series. I don't know whether I'm going to throw my schedule out the window and read it exclusively or whether I should do like I did with LoA and take breaks between the books.

I'm not sure I'm in for a group dark read. It really depends on the book. Like it's mentioned on this thread, I'm super picky about my dark reads and they are few and far between.

message 49: by Tessa (new)

Tessa | 1761 comments lol I just went looking for a book that I could never read. :P

Fabi NEEDS Email Notifications | 872 comments LOL Tessa!

I know you don't like reading about weak men. I don't either. My favorite books are with strong MCs. I can't handle a weak MC as a female or a male. Sometimes I think you have a the wrong idea of what I read. ;-)

You did good, really, really good with this one for me.

Isn't if funny how we all go through phases in what we're enjoying reading at the moment?

I can be totally into sports for a while, then on into mysteries or something and then hit a spot where I want a dark read or a sweet read or whatever. It changes.
