You're welcome. Hilari Bell is a fantastic writer. Have you read the Farsala Trilogy yet?

I love all her books (with the exception of Trickster's Girl) but the Farsala Trilogy is her masterpiece.
It was in the children's section of my local library. The cover featured a man looking around a corner.
The plot had a few ships of humans landing on a new alien planet. It was filled with different races of aliens, they were peaceful. The humans wanted to be the newest race to "conquer" the planet.
The main character is introduced to an ant-like alien with a chitinous exoskeleton. The ant is a scholar and tries to teach the human about his culture. The human has been told to learn about culture if he wants to get off the planet (I think that's what he wants. It may be something like if he wants his ship back.)
The book heavily featured trade and bartering and had a strong theme of pacifism except under extreme circumstances.
Thanks so much for any help you guys can give!
