YASS! The Yellow Wallpaper was one of the best discussions we've had. I could see all of those English Majors creeping out of the woodwork ;)

Skye | 364 comments I am very particular about POV, too. BTW, where is John?

Trinity | 803 comments Mod

John said, more on this later, maybe he is deep in thought.
Pondering on his pontifications..

She generally gives input when we read "literature". As in, things generally discussed in a classroom setting (i.e., Jude the Obscure).

She was with us on our discussion of the Yellow Wallpaper and she brought in a psychological element. Don't remember? You can always go back and reread the discussion. She and I were talking about comparing the Yellow Wallpaper to Kafka's Metamorphosis.

message 62: by Skye (new) - added it

Skye | 364 comments Yes, I do recall, now. I adore Kafka.

I never cared for Hardy----I do love DH Lawrence and Herman Hesse.

Trinity | 803 comments Mod
I still think we should do a month of shorts. We all seem to love them. Like 4 or 5 of them. I am sure some of them mentioned would generate a lot of discussion.

Trinity | 803 comments Mod
Me either. It was just the first book that came to mind... Having made the Jude comment earlier.

John Graham Wilson John? I live in a different time zone. Re: Jude, by coincidence I was in Dorchester in June of this year. There is a statue of Hardy at the top of the high street and a museum with his writing desk. Tolpuddle is nearby, famous for workers being hung for forming a union in the 17th century. During the 60s there was a spate of literary movies - Hardy, Lawrence, and so on. They were quite good; all very English. Lawrence caught the mood.

Hardy was the arch pessimist. Characters looking for freedom and quashed by 19th century morality. And bad luck. I think Jude is a pain but I still regard Hardy as a great writer. Why? He got his time down in black and white, and did it well.

Skye | 364 comments I know you live in England, John, and have a tendency to be a little persnickety, but that brings something to our discussions. I checked out your profile, and we bought had the same occupation. Yes, Hardy wrote many renowned novels; Tess, Return of the Native with the infamous 'reddleman,' but I preferred Lawrence and George Eliot, and Dickens; I also adore Charlotte and Emily, but I have never been a Jane Austen fan. However, in terms of Gothicism, there are certain elements that seem to be missing from some of the novels. I know you did not care for My Cousin Rachel, but I am definitely lured in by
Du Maurier's writing, and the Cornish setting.

Trinity | 803 comments Mod
My fault. I mentioned Jude, then we rabbit trailed.

I finally got a chance to finish the book a few days ago.

Stevie's homelife was difficult to read because it mirrored my childhood too much. I was so confused when part two started. I think I was too tired at the time to realize it had jumped back in time. The ending was a bit unexpected. Is the new farmhouse owner Ras?!

Bless you, Miko. Haven't read that far yet but thank you for contributing. Will definitely give some insight and replies.
Yeah, when things get close enough to mirror things that have happened to you like that, it's kind of eeeyuh. Thanks for sharing. I feel the same there.

Trinity | 803 comments Mod
Anyone have any insight into the issues I presented? Does it get better?
