14 Days of Discoveries (Part 1)

I just found a bargain hardcover of stone of tears - perfect for my collection, as it was my favorite one (either that or Faith of the Fallen).
Having some technical difficulties updating our list, wont let me add anymore books to post #1. I'm assuming its my swiss cheese brain and I'll figure it out later, but its partially updated

My first experience with fantasy was "The Sword of Truth" series, and I enjoyed it. I burnt myself out reading it. I got all the way to Chainfire but after Richard asking what felt like 100 different people, "Do you know Kahlan, my wife?", it got old really quick and I stopped reading it. I read them all consecutively too which burnt me out. Now I'm thinking of starting over again, but those 1000 page behemoths...My favorite book was where (view spoiler) , so yeah!
Name a book that made you cry
My #1 cry was the Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. Not good at forming coherent sentences right now so I will just leave it like that.

When I read The Hobbit at 12 and (view spoiler) it was the first time a character died in a book. I read LOTR The Return of the King right after that and (view spoiler) same deal.
Most recently The Crippled God there's some moments with characters who you've gotten to know for better than a year and 2.5 million words (no hyperbole it's closer to 3M). It wasn't outright crying like when I was twelve but I had to pause and blink it out to continue.
I have to mention the movie Terms of Endearment. I've only watched it once for a reason. Complete ballfest and I think if I saw it now it would be worse. On the upside Debra Winger is finally in something again. If you have Netflix The Ranch is pretty funny. Sam Elliot steals the show IMO.

Lmao definitely.

I was more in shock from that. At the end of The Price of Spring I teared up a bit. Those were some wonderful characters to say goodbye to.

Anyone who has completed the series will know why Reaper's Gale can make one cry, and there is one small line in Toll the Hounds that is so very sad. And of course the entire ending of The Crippled God.."
RG and the TCG were completely up there in the tear jerker moments. I think it's just easier to reference DHG or MOI because a lot of member haven't gotten to RG or TCG. (view spoiler)

TCG is such a wonderful book because towards the end every sentence is laden with meaning. Things are recalled - small stories told, or events from long ago in the series. (view spoiler) Erikson has a great talent of infusing a very short sentence, or a phrase with a lot of meaning. His general writing technique of leaving a lot to the imagination of the reader really helps here.

Yeah Harry Potter made me cry a few times.
The Lions of Al-Rassan definitely. Also Deadhouse Gates may have left a lump in my throat by the end.

Those were some of my favorite parts! Loved them.

We're doing Dancer's Lament July 20th if you haven't gotten that far. We just finished up the first two Kharkanas books. I'm as big of an SE fan as you are.

Epic battle scenes
My favorite would probably have to be from A Song of Ice and Fire, A Clash of Kings during the battle of the Blackwater

-I've moved this to a new folder marked "group participation challenges"
-I've renamed the challenge, as I think that we should end the challenge with people wanting to actually do it again at a later date with different questions, rather than be sick of it at the end.
-I've finally been able to update the master list. I've deleted 2 earlier comments to make a placeholder in case I run out of room for the master list. I'm sorry if your comment got deleted, but kind of not sorry. :D

oh, man! Reading that series all back to back would be incredibly tedious! I think I read them over the course of two years and still got frustrated occasionally with the repetition of dialogue. It's like goodkind isn't satisfied unless he's beating you over the head with each of his concepts. The one that annoyed me the most was Naked Empire – if I had to hear a description of what the "pristinely ungifted" were one more time, I was going to burn the book. I didn't mind the final trilogy – although
what you mentioned definitely got old. I was very, very upset with The Omen Machine, which is where he lost me. All of his annoying writing habits were at the forefront and I got tired of the senseless back and forth repetition. That said, I also loved the part of the series you're referencing and have been tempted to pick up Death's Mistress despite my better judgment....

The book I can remember outright sobbing to is Fool's Fate by Hobb. I liked her before it, but the scenes in this book are what turned me into a super fan. Sobbing. Heap. It affected me so profoundly, I started a blog to talk about it. lol

The Codex Alera Furies of Calderon series by Jim Butcher is my most recent pick for this category. But I also really loved the ones in Carey's Kushiel Series. Specifically Kushiel's Scion. I'd also like to take a moment to give a shoutout to Ann Aguirre's battle scenes in Perdition.
But I second Sanderson's Way of Kings - I remember being in total awe that a book about war could be so friggin interesting.
Side note: I find myself getting bored with battle scenes in books. I've read so many that after a while they all start to sound the same. I take note when they're good. :)
Also, also, I love all the battle scenes in LOTR movies. lol
