Well, Pluto may be considered a "planet", due to it being made of the same materials that many of the other planets in the system consist of. Even though it may be smaller than the other planets, Pluto is only two thousand kilometers smaller than Mercury itself.

There are 3 rules for a planet to be a planet:

A planet must be round.

A planet must orbit the sun.

A planet must have “cleared the neighborhood" of its orbit. This means that as a planet travels, its gravity sweeps and clears the space around it of other objects. Some of the objects may crash into the planet, others may become moons.


Pluto may have met the first 2 standards but it does not meet the 3rd.

Pluto may have not fit the third standard, its orbit does pick up moons and creates a planet that most other planets hold. It my not be hospitable for humans to even land on, but it's the same for many other planets such as Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune.
