ONGOING CONFLICTS
Duration July 1, 2017 to July 31, 2017

After WW1 and WW2, the hope was that world would heal from the atrocities of war. Unfortunately, the events of September 11, 2001 and the subsequent terror attacks around the world have taught us that this is not yet possible for humanity.

This month, our theme is wars, and while it would have been easy to make a challenge about wars that happened to peoples past, we should challenge ourselves to understand the wars of today. Hopefully this challenge will help you do that. Listed below are conflicts and wars that are currently happening, and your challenge is to read a book fiction or non-fiction about each one.

1. The Israeli - Palestinian Conflict: 1947 - ongoing

2. Thailand Civil War - 1948 - ongoing

3. The Korean War: 1950 - ongoing

4. The War in Afghanistan: 2001 - ongoing

5. The Iraq War: 2003 - 2016 and now again

6. The War against Boko Haram: 2009 - ongoing.

7. The War in Somalia: 2009 - ongoing

8. The Yemeni Civil War: 2011 - ongoing.

9. The Syrian Civil War: 2011 - ongoing.

10. The Ukraine Conflict: 2013 - ongoing

There are Listopias available for each of these countries/conflicts if you have trouble finding books.

Safaa will be the leader for this challenge.

5. The Iraq War: 2003 - 2016 and now again - The Complete Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi - I'm not a fan of graphic novels, but I loved this book - so informative re: Iranian history during this time period.

Just finished We Crossed a Bridge and It Trembled. It was very good, but heart-breaking. The conditions of life people endure during war are so unimaginable. I gave it 5 stars.

I knew most of books in this challenge hear breaking .but i think you get a lot of information from the book.

Hi Safaa, I did learn a lot, and while I love history, this was out of what I would normally read. That's one of the best reasons to participate in the challenges.

I did read it. It was sad, but it gave me a better understanding of what has happened in Syria. If not for this challenge I probably would not have read it.
