Jessica (j-boo) | 323 comments Is the vote for the July pick just for patrons, then?

It's fine if it is, I just want to make sure I'm not missing something if it's actually open to everybody.

Yes.

Meghan | 12 comments You can get spiked Butterbeer in the bar of the Three Broomsticks restaurant at Universal Studios Hollywood. I had it with Fireball and it was delicious - the sweetness dulls the cinnamon heat.

Yes."

Just to be clear, your answer is (I assume): "Yes, it's actually open to everybody."

Not 'Yes' to Jessica's opening question.

Everyone go Vote:

Sorry. Thanks for clarifying things Dave. You have until tonight to vote. I believe you need an account to vote (which is free), but that doesn't require you to be a backer.

terpkristin | 4407 comments What was the name of the butter beer that Tom was drinking? I want to go find some.

I imagine it would be good with whatever they put into a buttery nipple.

They put a link to buy it on Amazon in the show notes:
https://www.amazon.com/Potter-Butter-...

terpkristin | 4407 comments Oooh. Thanks.

Trike | 11190 comments Completely different yet pointless topic: Veronica distinctly said "Bare your sword" this time. Usually it sounds more like "barrier sword". I'm always tickled by the idea of a barrier sword, like a sharp shield or something.

I'm goofy.

I came here looking for the link, so big thank you Tassie Dave for posting it in just the nick of time. :-)

AndrewP (andrewca) | 2667 comments It's Sat night and no sign of the July poll winner being announced. I thought Tom said he would announce it today?

message 14: by Tassie Dave, S&L Historian (new) - rated it 3 stars

Tassie Dave | 4076 comments Mod
It hasn't been announced yet, but it is going to be The Left Hand of Darkness.

Unless the poll gets a late run of votes, because it still seems to be open.

Yeah. No idea what's going on..like Dave said. I'll see about getting an official word though..

Trike | 11190 comments Tom saw Despicable Me 3 today and clearly has brainlock from the sheer awesome of that movie.

Mark (markmtz) | 2821 comments The Supremes posted this comment at Patreon this morning:

Official close! The July pick will be The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Legui

Not sure where that last "n" went, but there we are!

AndrewP (andrewca) | 2667 comments Kind of surprised this one even made the list considering we already read one of her books.

We've also read 2 books (1 was an alt pick) by Stephenson. There is no hard and fast rule about repeated authors though I think most of the time they do try to avoid it.

As far as reading multiple books by the same author, we've read:

2 by Neil Gaiman, George R.R. Martin, Terry Pratchett and now Ursula K. Le Guin.

(Gaiman & Pratchett did co-write one of the picks. Good Omens)
and Martin had 2 books from the same series.

If you include Alternates then also:
3 by John Scalzi (1 Pick and 2 alternates)
2 by Neal Stephenson, N.K.Jemisin & Naomi Novik (1 pick and 1 alternate each)

Robert Lee (harlock415) | 319 comments There is butterscotch schnapps which you can add to the Flying Cauldron soda without making it taste too alcoholic. Top it off with a little whipped cream on top and you are good to go.

Guys. Please never repeatedly call Alexa again. My speaker was next to 'Lady A' and she freaked out and tried to call "1983" :D

Trike | 11190 comments Cody wrote: "Guys. Please never repeatedly call Alexa again. My speaker was next to 'Lady A' and she freaked out and tried to call "1983" :D"

That reminds me of a story that I hope is true:

At a demonstration of speech-recognition software, the tech asked everyone in the room to quiet down.

Just then someone in the back of the room yelled, "Format C: Return."

Someone else chimed in: "Yes, Return!"

Unfortunately, the software worked.

I don't know how Alexa works, but I wonder if it's possible for some dillhole jokester to prioritize embarrassing searches or responses.

Stephen Richter (stephenofskytrain) | 1638 comments By the way, the next Hugo shin-dig will be in San Jose, Ca
http://www.worldcon76.org/.
Can I suggest that Tom and Veronica plan to 1) Get a vendor table and/or 2) Host a Panel. Set up a "go fund me" page to cover the costs or the like. It will create the Sword & Laser Hugo dominance in the Podcast category as it should be!
Plus I am going to Helsinki this August and I am glad there are other S&Lers going as well. I have been working a lot of overtime to fill up my Booze budget, so if you see me I will buy fellow S&Lers a drink!! Booze in Helsinki is very expensive.

Lisa | 25 comments It's certainly possible to get Alexa to buy stuff you don't want: https://www.theverge.com/2017/1/7/142...

John (Nevets) Nevets (nevets) | 1900 comments Stephen, that is awesome that you are going to Helsinki. I hope you have a great time and have great experiences to share. That's interesting about alcohol being expensive in Finland, since the few Fins I've known have really enjoyed drinking. But then again that has been in the US, so maybe they were making up for lost time.

My brother's Finnish friend Peter was a hardcore drinker, too. One day he decided to drive to the Arctic Circle, so he loaded up the trunk of his Reliant K-car with booze from the state store and traded hooch for lodgings throughout Canada. I doubt you could get away with that these days, but the 80s were a different time.

message 30: by Stephen (last edited Jul 02, 2017 01:21PM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Stephen Richter (stephenofskytrain) | 1638 comments Yes I believe the alcohol is expensive due to the winter months darkness. Not good to be on a bender with 18hrs of darkness. The S&Lers who are going to Helsinki will enjoy the 18 hours of daylight. So bottoms up. May I suggest those going invest in a night mask. plus the flight for me is 18hr so the night mask will also work on the plane,
