Okay so I read this book a million years ago (probably like 10). I read it while I was on vacation and I couldn't put it down. I vaguely remember what it's about. It was about a siren/mermaid who falls in love with a man and they live on an island together by themselves. That's all I can remember. The cover of the book was blue. If that helps.

The Animal Family by Randall Jarrell GRs desc doesn't say much to match what you wrote but read some of the reviews and see if that help you decide if this is the book your looking for.

It's been a long time, but check out The Merman's Children. I remember the cover had a lot of blue & it follows several different mermaids around. One of them might have lived on an island with a guy.
