Lauren | 3 comments The book’s setting is a Dystopian world where new cities were built on top of the old rotting ones. The new cities are built on top of giant platforms held up by coulombs and block out all sunlight from the original city. The wealthy live in the top upper level in luxury while the rest still live in the dark and damp under city. Technology is far more advanced than real world everywhere although the upper level has the most advanced. The lower level is always flooding or is consistently damp because of the lack of sunlight to evaporate the buildup of moisture.

The main character is a teen girl born on the lower level who has some form of mental powers and is taken by scientists from the upper level because of them. All I remember about her powers is a scene where she is forced to move a heavy cube while attached to a EEG type tool until she passes out. They want to study her for research and tell her family she drowns in the river and nothing but a running shoe is recovered. The girl’s family consists of both parents (i think) and a brother who live in some sort of apartment building on the lower level. The scientists try to motivate her by saying they will let her see her family but after some time she begins trying to escape the facility she’s held in because she doesn't believe they will ever make good on their promise and they are not entirely ethical. The facility she is held in has armed guards. At some point in the middle of the novel the girl notices an increase in security and guns and deducts that something big is going to go down soon or there is trouble that means she could break out soon. I believe the book starts with a chase scene of the girl trying to escape in a futuristic sort of fighter plane but gets caught (may be a dream she has or memory flashback but its near the beginning and she is shaking ). I also believe the book flips back and forth between the girl and her brother and his friends but begins at least a year after the girl is separated from her family (her "death"). There are sub plots relating to the brothers friends that become more significant near the end of the novel.

The organization who has the girl or some group from the higher city begins a flight simulator game for free or cheap to play at arcades in the lower level. After the launch of the game they begin a competition in the lower level with a great reward of some kind for the winner(s). The player gets in a physical simulator that is exactly like the cockpit of the fighter plane like machine the girl tries to escape in. The flight simulator arcade game is actually a screening process for the antagonists to find more kids who have abilities similar to those the main girl has. The brother and his friends play the game because they want a shot at the prize. I do not believe the brother has powers like his sister or at least he does not discover them until late in the novel (I don't think so but it's possible).

I have more detail but it’s further along in the novel and are essentially spoilers (despite the fact that I don't remember the resolution of the story.)

I probably read this novel between 2010 and 2015 (possibly before but not too far from that range I don't think). I have no idea when it was published, the author’s name, or any character names or descriptions (too many books since then and the names and descriptions are just gone). It's a teen or young adult novel, a physical book, and the book is a decent length I don't think it’s less than 250-300 pages and not over 600.

Lauren | 3 comments SOLVED The book is "The Roar" by Emma Clayton.
(I put this description on another site and they helped me find it, though i'm grateful to those here who viewed my post but were unable to help.) I've tried to find this book so many times before after reading it in middle school and am glad I can finally put a name to the story I only had pieces of. I had most of the details right and I thank this community for trying to help.

This was my first ever comment in this discussion and I don't know how to shelf books but I hope I followed the rules in the post about this discussion's policies to help anyone else who may have been looking for this book.
