SOLVED. Book that mentions the evil of mirrors as compared to windows, and the different kind of lies [s]

I remember the protagonist is a young boy, it may be that his mother is poor. Every year they get cake for a holiday, and he pretends to be surprised when he gets the prize.
There are mentions of white lies, and maybe even gold lies? Mirrors show you what you want to see, so they aren't truthful as compared to windows. There is a girl, her name has something to do with snow (not too sure on that front though). I think the cover I read had a picture of a boy looking out a window.

Seor, when did you read this (what year)? Was it an old book or a new one at the time? Would you call it a book for adults or YA or younger kids? Do you remember anything about the cover or the size of the book?

I read this at least 4 years ago, and it seemed new. I think it was YA, and the book size seemed average, nothing particularly large or small about it.
