I just love this book! It has the fast reading pace as the other books in the series.
I've also finished the first part and I'm starting 'The assassin and the healer'. What I like about this book, is that it reads as 5 different stories in the book, but also overlapping each other. Maybe as 5 important moments of Celaena's life?

The assassin and the pirate lord:
(view spoiler)[ wonder if the other assassin's know who Celaena really is or is it only Aerobyn that knows it and made he Celaena his heir because of who she is and where she comes from? In a way Aerobyn is helping the king of Adarlan by buying slaves. Aerobyn know what happens with all the slaves and knows that Celaena could got this fate too, so why does he this? Maybe it's some sort of a twisted wake up call to let her see what is happening to her people. In this book you see Celaena stand up for the weak. That's a big contrast with the first book. So you wonder how or why she could be broken like that in the first book. (hide spoiler)]

Sam and Celaena:
(view spoiler)[I like Sam a lot too. He's so sweet and it's sad to already know what his fate will be. I'm curious about to know what was the reason of this.
I like Celaena more than I did in the first book I've read about her. Okay, she's rude and arrogant, but you read between the lines that she cares about people, like Sam and Ben. What she did with the slaves, was dangerous and right against Aerobyn, but it was the only honest and right thing she could do. (hide spoiler)]

(view spoiler)[I wonder who the Mute Master and the Silent Assassin's are. Will she train her skills in becoming silent as a punishment? And what's that with Yrene? Celaene sees that the Inn isn't the right place at all for this girl. Will she take her with her? Celaena is also thinking a lot about escaping Aerobyn. I thought she was loyal to him as becoming his heir. Maybe she's not fully trusting him after the events with the slaves, but he has her and Sam in his power.In this one there was also some thoughts about the children being victims of the war, so that was one of the reasons that Celaena wanted a better life for Yrene. She's acting like a sort of Robin Hood. Could this book be the part where Celaena is still arrogant and full of herself, but still care about other people before she got in the mines? This book also give an insight on the consequences of the power of Adarlan: what it is for the people of different cities, what overcame them, what they do to survive...

This is my first experience with the Throne of Glass series at all - I haven't read any of the other books, so I would just ask that any comments about later in the books be separated and spoiler tagged so that I don't end up seeing things I cannot unsee :)

But here are my thoughts as a completely new to the world reader...

The Assassin and the Pirate Lord:

I loved this story! I liked how Celaena stood up for the slaves and did what she believed in, even knowing she would likely be punished. I find it interesting that she doesn't really seem to have a problem with taking lives for contract, but she doesn't like the idea of breaking up families for slaves. She does sort of ponder it for a hot minute, but maybe she just sees the irony herself and can't explain it either.

I loved watching the relationship with Sam change. I would have liked to see how it continued on the journey back, but I'm sure that would have made for a pretty boring story. ;)

The Assassin and the Healer:

This one was pretty short, but it tied the first and third stories together nicely, and Yrene is mentioned later, so it was nice to have the context.

Celaena was still processing how she was treated after the events in the Pirate Lord. She was itching for fights and just in a general foul mood. But she saw something of her lost innocence in the young healer Yrene, and I love that she took the time to teach her to defend herself. She saw enough potential for Yrene to better the world that she even gave her the money she needed to get out of her terrible job. I think she sort of felt that she couldn't be better, like Yrene, and she wanted someone to do what she wished she could.

This story was full of compassion, as much as Celaena can be.

The Assassin and the Desert:

So at first, I think Celaena is just sort of wondering why she has to do this. She's being punished by not being able to take any new contracts? Sent to the far away keep for training under a different master. But why? Isn't she already training under the best?

But as time goes on, I think she starts to question her allegiances a little bit more. Perhaps she shouldn't be treated the way she was for freeing the slaves? Maybe she should break out and go off on her own, rather than continuing to live under Arobynn's rules, because it seems like not all masters are that way. But it's basically all she's ever known, so it's not as easy as it seems. Although by the end of the story, she does seem quite dedicated to the plan...

But anyway, I think the fact that she was hurt by someone she trusts probably plays into her character in the main series - granted I'm going off of things I've heard without trying to be spoiled vs actually having "met" Celaena in the full series. It was also nice to see her sort of realize she may have some feelings for Sam after all...

And I really wonder if she will ever find the spider for the guy she got the spidersilk from... that seems like a fun adventure!

The Assassin and the Underworld:

Ok, so this story just made me mad at Celaena, like the whole time. She wouldn't tell Arobynn she was paying her debt and moving out for the longest time. She was a total jerk to Sam - just admit you have feelings for crying out loud! He's all but pouring his heart out to you and you stand there like you can't possibly be bothered to admit you're a person with feelings? Sigh...

And the fact that she immediately trusted Arobynn the second she got home, jumping blindly back in to believe the first thing he says without question? I mean, honestly, who didn't see that coming? He had such a change of heart after beating you senseless, his favorite and protege? Ugh... I felt so bad for Sam. I am glad she finally woke up and admitted her feelings, but I feel like she should have been smarter to know what was going on, or at least suspect something was going on, with the contract. Especially after she saw what was on the maps, and the missing trade agreement and whatnot, combined with what the bodyguard said. I can't believe she gave the papers to Arobynn before even talking to him about it!

Then again, she is only 16, right? So I'm sure there's some immaturity and emotional attachment that would make it harder to understand, and things always seem easier from the outside.

(view spoiler)[ I just have to say that when this story finished, I found myself thinking that the story was super short. But this is the story where I saw all of Celaena and Sam's bantering. It was adorable. At first, I was thinking, how could they be the two people who fall in love. They want to murder each other! Celaena is the best assassin. But honestly, what kind of assassin frees 200 slaves? I love the concept and all, but the best assassin caress enough to free 200 slaves. But that fact adds to the story a lot. (hide spoiler)]

The Assassin and the Empire
(view spoiler)[ So wow... ok, I don't know how to express my feelings about this. Obviously, I'm sad that Sam died. I love Sam... and I feel like he would be really great for Celaena. So I feel sympathy for Celaena, because she obviously loved him so much, she is just a bundle of anger and revenge.

Then there's frustration. She is smarter than jumping into a window, rushing into her revenge and not thinking things through. She's Adarlan's Assassin. She's the best. But again, she's distraught and she's still very young, so it's frustrating but not out of character.

I would like to think that had she not been so upset over Sam, she would have realized that ONCE AGAIN, Arobynn has orchestrated this entire situation to suit his desires. He is clearly not willing to let Celaena go, but she must have some Stockholm syndrome, because she can NOT see him for what he is. So there's the anger... at Arobynn for being a manipulative arrogant UGH... at Celaena for being blind to his... UGH! (hide spoiler)]

So all that said, I loved this book. It was a fantastic ride and Maas so successfully made me feel every emotion that I honestly haven't had such a book hangover in a while. I don't know how to feel right now. I don't know what to read next. And yet I can't wait to dive into the rest of the series to see how these events shaped who Celaena is to become.

(view spoiler)[The Silent Assassins are very interesting if you compare them with the Assassins of Aerobyn. They're caring and compassionate and it seems that killing and money are not their priority. I think what Cealana learned there, made her also for a bit of who she is. I was also sad for what Ansel did to her, but it made the reader see that Cealana has a human side. What Ansel told her when they fought, Cealana saw a glimpse of herself in Ansel, on what she can become if she let hate and rage consume herself. Maybe she could have thought more on this moment later on. (hide spoiler)]

Arobynn sent Celaena & Sam on a mission together to the pirate lord and they ended up saving salves from the slave trade. Celaena & Sam went from enemies to friends.
