Sheryl | 99 comments Just finished The Administratrix, by Emma Ghent Curtis, arguably the first "proper" western novel (it predates The Virginian by over a decade and, although it needed a good editor, is much less episodic and does not feel like short stories awkwardly strung together). Before that it was Andrew Klavan's The Truth and Beauty, which was interesting and entertaining and more lightweight than I expected. Which is kind of what I think of his fiction so I don't know why I'm surprised.

Currently reading The Good Country: A History of the American Midwest 1800-1900 by Jon K. Lauck, which has verified my suspicion that the midwest gets ignored a lot in histories of that era.

And I'm also part way into War Party in Blue: Pawnee Scouts in the U.S. Army, by Mark van de Logt, which is a nice antidote to Dee Brown's inaccuracies and unkindness toward the Pawnee in Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee

And I have great hopes of finally finishing The WIERDest People in the World: How the West Became Psychologically Peculiar and Particularly Prosperous, by Joseph Henrich, which is too dang long and I bailed on it a year or so back but I think the repetition won't bother me as much if I take it up again.
