A Murder Is Announced A Murder Is Announced (Miss Marple, #5) by Agatha Christie
Author: Agatha Christie
Pages: 288 p.
Rating 4 stars
Read: 19/7/2017

Review: The title allready announces there might be some suspense. And there is, quite a lot. The book is full of typical characters and Miss Marple knows for each and every one a comparison in her own little town. While some find A. Christie outdated, I still enjoy her books a lot. It gives you sheer pleasure reading without horrific descriptions or complex psychoanalytical explanations. I enjoy those too, but for the rest in my head, I need miss Marple now and then. And this book was a very enjoyable read. It even took me a very long time guessing who did it. That was one of the surprises.

Moving Maverick by Lucy Lennox
Read: 7/19/17
Rating and Review: 4 stars
I really liked this installment in the series. I am a sucker for a friends to lovers romance and this one was good. It also felt a bit like a second chance romance, even though they were boys the last time they saw each other. Beau and Maverick were so great together. There was almost no angst, no big drama or misunderstandings. They talked to each other like adults. It was so refreshing!!
Downsides were very little of the rest of the Marian clan and we still got Aunt Tilly. I am so done with her.

Review: it has been awhile since I read the fourth book in this series. I'm not exactly sure why I had waited awhile to get to this one. I love the dry humor in these books. I enjoyed the character development in this one - lots of different things going on in Myron's life. The mystery part kept me on my toes, and I enjoyed unraveling all the buried secrets with Myron. It's a good read and while you don't technically have to read the previous books before reading this one, I'd definitely recommend it.

Fudge Cupcake Murder (Hannah Swensen, #5) by Joanne Fluke

Read: 7/20
How it fits: #5 in a series
Rating: 3 stars

Since I started reading this series, something about the dialogue has bothered me. I don't know if it's that people give personal information too easily, or if it's the repetitiveness, or something else. And I don't really read cozy mysteries very often so I don't know if this is the trend, but a lot of the plot and Hannah( the main character)'s actions seem to repeat. A lot. I did figure out who the bad guy was pretty quick, so it did kind of annoy me that Hannah couldn't put it together.

Molly Harper is my go to author for Romance all wrapped up in silly. Her books never fail to make me smile and leave me in a happy place. Anna is trying to get a rare book back into the hands of Jane Jameson. Unfortunately, others are trying to get the book for themselves. Lucky for Anna, she has a sexy vampire looking out for her safety. But something isn't adding up...

Very cute and funny!

Review: Eve Levine, a half-demon and black witch, is dead but living a very active after-life. She watches over her teenage daughter Savannah and flirts with her ex-love Kris (a dead sorcerer). She is recruited by the Fates to go after the Nix - an evil spirit who possesses humans and makes them commit atrocious crimes (Lizzie Borden is one victim). I liked the humor in this installment of the series, and I came to like Eve, a character I didn't really care for in earlier books. I need to not wait so long to read the next installment.

Review: a good style scandinavian thriller. I like this series cause you get to know the regular persons like they're family. This book was very well made. The question is an intriguing one: what happened years ago that has so many repercussions today? People get nastey letters, people get killed and others just threatened.
The answer was unforeseen ( except maybe at the end, you could feel it coming). While I liked the book quite well, the solution was a bit a disappointement as it felt far sought. But all in all, a nice thriller for fans of the genre (which I am)

Lauren (laurenv) | 64 comments Hey guys, I've got a bit of a dilemma for our next roll - I'm going on vacation Friday (I'm leaving super early... ugh) until Wednesday, and I won't have access to my books/library books. I might have access to Overdrive, but I don't know if I'll even have time to read. Would it be ok for me to roll Friday morning (if Nichole hasn't already) so I can pack a relevant book or try to download something (and do my best to get it done)?

Wow!! I just can't seem to stop saying that. This book was so full of surprises and twists and turns...and I loved every second of it. There really isn't much I can say without significant spoiler tags, but I'll give it a shot.
This one picks up right where book 1 leaves off. Ethan and Jack have a really great, strong relationship but there is still the bad guy out there determined to get them. There are a lot of characters to follow and a very twisty plot. The book jumps POV a lot, but it felt necessary to allow us to see more of what is going on.
I loved this book so much that I had a hard time putting it down to do all the adult things I had to do every day. I just wanted to sit and devour it in one sitting. I'm hoping that the final book is just as good. =)

This is turning out to be another fun series from Helen Harper. In this series, Integrity Taylor is supposed to be a Clan Princess but ran away when she was 11 years old. She's made a life for herself outside of the Sidhe clans with her adopted Family of friends. It's a ragtag bunch that are known thieves but they're free and happy.

Unfortunately, Integrity and crew keeps getting called back into the fray of Clan politics and drama. This time, Integrity willingly joins the Sidhe Games that only come along once a generation. She is hoping to win so that she can claim her family lands. If it means, her family will have a place to call home then she'll make her own clan. But she has to win first and there are a lot of people trying to prevent that from happening.

I'm really enjoying this series. I've always loved reading about Fae and this hits the spot. Helen Harper writes strong and feisty heroines that have a knack for finding trouble.

Review: The last book from this series, #5.... left me feeling flat. So I was kind of nervous about picking this one up. But I'm glad I did because I really enjoyed it. I love that the readers got to see and understand more of Roarke and Summerset. I loved that aspect of it. It was interesting to follow the leads and I was pleasantly surprised when the "who-dun-it" was revealed. Just a quick, fun read that I enjoyed and left me ready to read #7 sooner rather than later :)

Review: Meg Corbyn is a Cassandra sangue, a blood prophet, who sees the future after cutting herself. She has fled the control of men who profit off of her gift and is now living in a community of Others -- werewolves, vampires, fae, and super creepy Medusa-like woman who also happens to run a bakery. Like the first, this book has a lot of action and some humorous moments. It still reminds me of True Blood, which is a good thing.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (Harry Potter, #2) by J.K. Rowling

How it fits: #2 in series
Read: 7/27
Rating: 5 stars

Harry Potter rereads are the best. Especially after watching the movies a few times and forgetting all the little details that JK puts in the books. Chamber of Secrets I think has always been my least favorite - but by no means do I dislike it! I just like all the other books better. Well. Maybe not Order of the Phoenix. They tie. But I've always admired that there are so many details that you can't notice or understand the importance of the first time you read, but once you've read the whole series and go back, you notice them and realize just how important they are.

How it fits: #1 in the Harry Hole series
Review: I have read a few thrillers of this series, but not nr. 1. This book gives a bit an introduction to the figure of the private detective Harry Hole. When in Australia a murder is committed on a Norvegian former Tv star, Harry Hole is sent there to keep an eye on things as representant of his home country. He starts his own research together with an aboriginal policeman. In the course of this introduction we get to know the past of the detective.
I thought the book was ok, but at the same time it is bot one of the best thrillers I've read: too many characters, too little psychological stuff. What I particularly didn't like was the fact that the author puts too much stuff in it and I got the feeling I was getting a lecture on 'alcoholism, aboriginals, guilt,...' while I just wanted to read a thriller. That beeing said, it is still a very decent book, better than many others, but not as good as a lot of scandinavian thrillers.

The Underground Railroad by Colson Whitehead
Standalone
Read: 7/30/17
Rating: ★★★★★

A powerful story of a slave girl who runs away from her Georgia plantation with help from those working the Underground Railroad. As she moves from place to place, the tension and fear are palpable as she (and we) wonder if she'll be recaptured and sent back to the hellish existence of slavery. It's hard to read books about this horrible time in American history, but at the same time it honors those who endured the unimaginable. I just can't imagine living during that time and acting like owning human beings and treating them like animals was normal. This book won the National Book Award and it's also on the longlist for the Booker Prize.

He decides to get a little closer and start working for the target, Jonas. He can't deny the attraction that he feels nor can he ignore the vulnerability that he sees in Jonas. Things just aren't adding up for him. After his discharge from the military, Cole seeks out answers to his sisters murder and he hopes that Jonas can help with that. These three men are tied together through tragedy and when secrets become exposed they come together for the truth and healing. This book had it all! Suspense, angst, smexy times and romance!

Breaking Creed by Alex Kava

How it Fits: #1 in the Ryder Creed series

Review: I love Alex Kava, her Maggie O'Dell books rank up there as one of my favorite series, it's actually one of the few series that I am current on (trust me, that never happens) and I always gobble her books right up as soon as I can. Ryder Creed was introduced in the last Maggie O'Dell book I read and I had known then that there was going to be a spin-off, I could just tell. But for whatever reason, I hadn't picked up this first book yet. So when I found it in the bargain section at Barnes & Noble I knew I had to have it. And I'm glad that this challenge gave me a "reason" to pick it up quickly. I will say though, that this felt more like a continuation of Maggie's series rather than Ryder's own series.... she had a huge part in this book. And I understand it's hard for authors to let go of their characters, but Ryder could and should stand well on his own. Not that I'm really complaining because I do love Maggie and it was nice to visit her in this book, but if you're going to have a Ryder Creed series, Ryder needs to be more than 50% of the book. Overall the book was well written and enjoyable. The plot (human trafficking/drugs) kept things very timely. It was a good first installment and I look forward to more Ryder (and Maggie!) in the future.
