Week 1: Spot 7
Book: The Ghost Fields by Elly Griffiths
Qualification: #7 in the Ruth Galloway Series
Pages: 370
Rating: Five stars

Review: This is one of those series that doesn't fall apart if you don't read them in sequence. I've only read #8 in this series and had no trouble getting back into Ruth's archaeological adventures. This time she's in Norfolk dealing with a crashed and buried WWII plane and a strangely preserved corpse within it, given the chemical makeup of the earth around it. And he's been murdered rather than killed in a crash - there's a bullet hole in his forehead. Turns out he's a long dead member of the strange and formerly wealthy Blackstock family, who have been plagued by early deaths and dark secrets. Complicating matters is Ruth's unusual relationship with DCI Nelson, the father of her daughter Kate, and Frank Barker, the handsome consultant on an American documentary film crew. The whole thing wraps up on the Blackstock mansion on a dark and stormy night. I really enjoyed the book, which is probably why I kept putting off finishing it.

Review:
The books begins with the day when Jordie was kicked out of the team...And sent to rehab.
Because he has a drinking problem. He is an alcoholic.
After some time Jordie comes back a new better Jordie. He tries to fix his relationship with his true love-his best friend's little sister-Kacey King.
The biggest thing that always bothers me about this series, that books are to long and it can easily can be shortened if you delete some boring or similar scenes.

Sorry to be a pain with so many questions. Thanks BarbaraAnn for always being so smart and helpful.

BarbaraAnn | 327 comments Hi Mandiann,

I was going to say that no way would it last that long, then I realized September is only 3 months away and the year's halfway over! I'm going to go to bed and pull the covers over my head.

For kicks I checked last years game and it ran from 1/1/16 - 3/24/16 so a little over 3 months.

Mandiann (goodreadscommandiann) | 440 comments Oh. I didn't realize it might go so long. I am pregnant and due date is September 18th.

Not sure if this is going to be a concern. I am hopeful that once he gets here I will still be able to get one book per week done in audio at minimum so yeah.

But if the team is worried about this, my feelings won't be hurt if you would rather have a sub step up and me step down.

Sorry. Pregnancy brain. haven't really been thinking things through very well recently.

It may not go that long. But if it does, we do eventually get one free pass to use just in case everyone can't finish in time on a particular week.

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The book was fast moving and I quite liked both Day and June. It was a little predictable in the way of plot being in the style of many YA dystopians however i enjoyed the characters and the story enough that i am about to start on book 2.

An enjoyable read and I give it 3.75 stars

More I read Contemporary Romance, they become more predictable to me.
Most of the time id the similar plot or similar characters and so on...
But not this book. (Not everything is predictable.)
I liked that New York city girl goes to a wildness of Alaska. I hope that the next book in series will be as unpredictable as this one.

Book: In the Moors by Nina Milton
Qualification: #1 in the Shaman Mystery series

Review: This story was a good balance of dark humor and dark mystery. It's interesting to note that the supernatural aspect of it was benign compared to the horrible crimes committed in the novel's 'corporeal' realm. Sabbie Dare is the shaman in question, who finds herself unintentionally embroiled in a child abduction/child murder investigation, one that is echoing an old case of several young children who disappeared over 20 years ago. She had been treating the main suspect, who is trying figure out what in his subconscious mind has been stunting his life since he was a child. She's also dealing with a strange attraction to the lead investigator, fending off the increasingly violent attentions of an ex-boyfriend and wondering why the defense attorney for the accused seems so haunted. Another young boy goes missing while the suspect is in custody and Sabbie's spiritual journeys are revealing the increasingly depraved nature of the original crimes. And it's beginning to look like the current crimes are a revenge set-up. I hope that the next episode is as good as this one.

When I first read book 1 of this series, whilst i did enjoy it, I didn't have much interest in reading any further in the series. However with a number of people I know raving about this series, I decided to give book 2 a go and am so glad I did.

Book 2 was a little slow to start but once it did get started, I was on the ride till the end. I felt that the characters were well drawn and we really got to know the main players a lot better in this book.

The world building in this series is really interesting with the premise of magic and tech battling each other in the world and the results on the world due to this. It helped pave the foundation for the story line and make it the intriguing compelling tale it was.

Overall though i think it is the characters that made this book and I will most certainly be reading book 3! Happy to give this 4 stars

Review - This book was well written and I enjoyed it. It's kind of a comfort read - there's some drama (Riley finds out he has a 8 year old daughter and Jack's mother is in love with a man who is her son's age). There's no question that things won't work out in the end. I like how Riley and Jack's relationship is progressing from book 1, but the book didn't blow me away. I'd have probably rated it 3.5 stars except for Hayley (Riley's daughter). She was the perfect, precocious moppet and annoyed me more than anything.

Review: Disappointing. That pretty much says it all about this book. I really liked the first installment - it was exciting, it was a new twist on the whole 'killer shark' genre, I was really interested to see what the author would do with it. Maybe I'm just jaded by the whole Jurassic Park franchise, but this was too much in too small a package -too much espionage, too much corporate skankyness, too much domestic drama. I ended up really disliking all of the characters but Jonas (yes, I think the name was supposed to be something of a pun) and even his neurosis gets wearying at times. His wife, Terry, comes off as a selfish bitch rather than a strong feminist this time, and his father-in-law has become hapless. The giant prehistoric shark that is the catalyst for all the action seems like an afterthought in some parts of the story. Since any author can trip up now and then, I'll give this series one more try before I declare that it should have been a 'one and done' novel.
