Hi team! :)
You've probably all seen me around (mod-perks, hah!), but how about we all do a little introduction for ourselves to get to know each other before getting started with the game?
I'm Denise, turned 30 this year, originally from Germany but have been living in Tampere, Finland, since 2008. This puts me in time zone GMT+2. I read a lot and from a variety of genres, but favourites include fantasy/sci-fi, historical fiction, mystery/thriller, M/M romance, and any combination of the above. Things that occasionally distract me from reading include one boyfriend, two cats, and unlimited access to Netflix and HBO Nordic. But never fear, I won't let them distract me too much to get my books read on time! :D
I've played pretty much every round of SS so far and am (once again) juggling both SS and SSS, so while I'm very familiar with how it all works and have captained teams before and would do it if no one else wants the job, I'm very much hoping there'll be other volunteers. XD
Looking forward to getting this round started!

I'm super into all forms of fiction, but my favorite is always more towards the paranormal world. I've been in a reading funk for a while but I'm hoping to pull myself out of it with SS. I've done both before and even both at the same time. I would have said I did them all but I missed a couple of rounds. I've been captain in the past and don't mind doing it if no one else wants to.
Can't wait to start.

I'm on a winning streak right now. I was on the winning team for SSS last round and both winning teams for SS and SSS the round before. So, let's keep the streak alive! Ha ha! Excited to get started.

I've played both SS and SSS before and enjoy them.

My favorite genre will always be historical fiction, though as of these past few months, all I really want to read is fantasy. I'll read anything, however, as long as it has some romance because this girl loves the loving.
Also, this is the first round of SS I've ever done so I'm pretty nervous, but I promise not to fail you guys. :)

I don't know what this says about me (besides my desire for a drink), but all I can seem to think of is "Make it a Double". Like I said, horrible with names.

Looks like I'll be captaining my SSS team, so I have to take my name out of the hat for captain in this one. Since Mandy said she's ok with being captain, shall we make that official? And we should probably PM Jaime to come check in.

Review:
Twelve years ago, when she was sixteen, Pete Caldecott met Jack Winter, the man who introduced her to the existence of magic and died brutally in front of her when the summoning of a spirit went wrong. Now, Pete is a detective investigating the case of a missing child, and a mysterious informant coming forward turns out to be none other than the very man whose supposed death has been haunting her for over a decade. With a huge chip on his shoulder about pretty much everything, a severe case of unexplained anger at Pete and a heroin addiction to boot, this older version of Jack doesn't exactly seem like someone one should be spending time with, but his supernatural insight into the whereabouts of the missing girl make him a valuable source - one that Pete has no choice but to return too when more children go missing.
This was a somewhat difficult book for me to rate. The premise is intriguing and despite the not entirely fleshed out worldbuilding and magic system I found myself interested enough in both to want to know more. The main problem I have is with the characters - what anybody sees in Jack I simply cannot understand, he behaved like a selfish asshole constantly flipflopping between bitching at everyone and wallowing in selfpity, and he and Pete spent most of the book being thoroughly unpleasant to each other and everybody who happened to wander into their line of fire - and the forced and painfully overdone attempts by an American author to make her characters sound as British as she can possibly conceive of that most of the dialogue just sounds completely ridiculous. Despite all that, I'm willing to give this series a second chance - perhaps it'll grow on me with prolongued exposure. I'm not going to hold my breath for it, though.

Review - I'm just starting to dabble in the cozy mystery genre and I have to say that I'm really enjoying many of them. For this one, I had the killer pegged pretty early in the book, but I was still pretty unsure, so it didn't irritate me too much. It was a 3 star book until the ending made me cry and I raised it up a star. Loved the relationship between young Tommy and his basset hound, Fred. Looking forward to continuing the series.

Review: I really enjoyed this very sweet story. It was a low angst, fun and very sweet romance between a neurosurgeon and a rodeo cowboy. I have to admit the opening scene where they meet and immediately have sex was a bit jarring but I enjoyed reading about these two men and the insecurities they both had about themselves and the relationship. I loved reading about Weber discovering that he could be more than a rodeo cowboy and that he didn't have to give up his pride to be with Cyrus. My only issue is the one I always have with Mary Calmes. Absolutely EVERYONE falls in love with Weber. Cyrus' family (which I actually understood in this one because they saw how happy Cyrus was with Weber and the fun and lightness he brought to Cyrus), his work colleagues, (ok I can buy that too), but also all the kids and animals and then at the end it was all the teachers and all the other parents and... you get the point. No one is universally loved by everyone and sometimes it just drives me crazy. Still overall I enjoyed this book and I will continue to read Mary Calmes because even with my little pet peeve I always enjoy her books.
Hi all!
Sorry I have been out of service the last few days exploring some beaches but have finally come home. Managed to start and finish Nevernight by Jay Kristoff (first in a series) while I was away! ive never written a review before but im sure theyll get better :) 5/5 stars on goodreads!
I've never read anything by Jay Kristoff before, however, I am so stoked I started with the first book of the Nevernight Chronicles. I LOVED this book. I've been on a bout of good books lately and this is one of them. I absolutely loved the setting of this novel. The intricate world building shows how much research Kristoff actually did before writing this book set in Italy. The characters were also written so well, my favourite(s) being Mia and Tric, especially with the way their backgrounds and relationship was executed!!! I did have trouble maybe a quarter of the way through, but the book sped up quickly after that. Ive never really. written a review, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book and cant wait to read the next!

Okay, so I really, really liked this book. Like, a lot.
The sarcasm and witty banter is right up my alley in the humor department and I don't know how many times I laughed and/or chuckled (there in the very last chapter, a few pages before the end, I laughed out loud so hard I had a coworker ask me if I was okay).
I docked it a star because the pacing was a little off for me. Sometimes, it was bambambam and then it was sloooooow and I had to push a little to get through the chapter, but even though it was slow, I still loved it, if that makes sense and there was one chapter where it was very detailed with animal abuse and I just can't handle that. Gory human death? Give it to me. But not anything to do with animals.
Falcio, Brasti, and Kest were just wonderful to read about and I can't wait to read more of their story. The villains were legit fucked up in the head that made me go daaaaamn right along with Falcio et al.
I will definitely be continuing on with this series. Cannot recommend it highly enough.

Review:
After losing her parents are murdered Whitney is forced to live with her aunt and cousin but they don't really notice what she's up to. She's been taking swimming lessons with Sam one of the instructors that's she had a crush on for over a year. When a swimming lesson goes south quickly Sam is forced to give her a little of his blood so that she doesn't die, but he didn't know it would turn Whitney into a mermaid also.
Whitney thinks she knows why she was transformed into a mermaid because she wasn't always a day human. After losing her parents she also loses her skinwalker ability, turning her into the day human everyone suspects. She has lots of questions and hopes that Sam will have the answer to them all. Only he's determined to keep her a secret from his fellow sirens in order to protect her life.
I like Whitney a lot, she's sweet but she can take care of herself and accepts the transformation of her fishie tail. I wasn't sure about Sam at first because he's keeping the truth about her a secret. However, as the book progresses it's clear that they are meant to be together and need each other. I like the sweet chemistry between the two it's a clean romance with a little biting and whole lot of tails.
I've had this one on my kindle for a while because of the cover is just so pretty. Water and Blood is a fast paced action packed sweet romance that captures the heart as well as the imagination. The concept for the mermaids is interesting the way the author has created two different kinds based on tail color and magical power plus they all drink blood. The characters are great I really felt like I connected to both Whitney and Sam as the author uses an alternating style. I enjoyed the author's writing style it flows from start to finish, it's easy to get lost in the story and hard to put down. I highly recommend checking it out because it's a new twist on the mermaid idea.
