The Breakdown
B.A. Paris
read: 7/30/2017
328 pages
how it fits: Stand alone novel
Review:
Wow, I couldn't put this book down. It was a page turner. B .A Paris has mastered the first person narrative. This book takes place mostly in the head of the main character (Cass) and expertly creates suspense. The ending was not surprising, but that did not take away from my enjoyment of the book.

Week 9 - Spot 70
Book: One Perfect Lie by Lisa Scottoline
How it fits: standalone (goes with 0)
Pages: 351
Date read: 7/31/17
Rating: 3.5
Review:
Lisa Scottoline is an auto read author for me and while I am not obsessed with this novel it was compulsively readable. We find out from the first sentence that the main character Chris is a fraud. How and why is slowly unraveled throughout the book as a larger dangerous plot unfolds. It was a good book and I'm glad I went into it blind. It wrapped up a little too perfectly for my taste though.

How it fits: Stand alone book
Completed: 8/1/17
Rating: 3 stars
Review: I had high hopes for this book, but it just didn't click for me. Reese is a young woman who is overheard making a phone call to get out of a boring date. Chase Parker is the wealthy entrepreneur who overhears her and calls her out on it - and then proceeds to save her by pretending he knows her and joining her date with his - his story was hilarious! Eventually, she ends up working for his company and things went downhill for me there. The way he pressured her (okay, it didn't take much, but still....he's her boss!) to go out with them which leads to more and more and more. And then how he shut down when his past catches up with him, then how easily they got over it...it just didn't work. There were good moments, both funny and sexy, which kept me reading and ultimately led me to a 3 star rating.

Death of a Prankster by M.C. Beaton
168 pages
How it fits: 7th in Hamish Macbeth series
Completed: 8/2
Rating: 4 stars
Review: I love Hamish Macbeth. In this story, Andrew Trent, known for his practical jokes, is murdered. Hamish's old flame, Priscilla, tries to help out in the investigation. Hamish uses all his powers to figure out who did the crime, and catches the criminal. MC Beaton's characters are great and full of life (until they're murdered).

Week 9 - Spot 70
Book: Healing the Highlander
How it fits: #7 in series Daughters of the Glen
Pages: 355
Date read: 8/3/17
Rating: ****
Review: This series combines a couple of my favorite things- historical fiction set in Scotland and fantasy. This particular heroine was not my favorite since she spent the whole book denying her Fae blood but I do like the way it was all pulled together at the end. Leah and Drew had both appeared in earlier books and it was nice to see them get their HEA.

Week 9
Spot: 70

Book: Till Death
Qualification: Standalone
Date Read: 8/1
Rating: 3 stars
Review: This romantic suspense was heavy on the romance and light on the suspense. Although it's possible that that was because a few people's comments had alerted me to some possible suspects, so I was looking closely at certain people. All-in-all, I think Jennifer Armentrout should stick to her Paranormal YA!

which is Testing #3 to read. I won't start until I hear what we are going to do.

I have read a 1 & 2, but I had to read 3 & 4 in the series because they were due at the library. :(

Review: Jan, an artic fox shifter, has been in love with Boris, a moose shifter (yeah, picture that in your mind!) for years. He made promises to her before he left on his military tour, but came back a changed man and now does everything he can to stay away from her. But Jan is wiley, just like her shifter, and is determined to get her man. When ghost from Boris' military past becomes a threat, Jan gets her chance. I love Eve Langlais' writing - her female characters are strong and snarky and the men (although they have an alpha streak) never know what hits them. The back theme of this story seems to be an ongoing one (I didn't read the first book) so it would probably be best to read the series in order, but I enjoyed this one thoroughly!!

Week 10
Spot: 82

Book: Tall, Dark, and Determined
Qualification: #2 in series
Date Read: 8/5
Rating: 2.5 stars
Review: The idea of this series is cute, but the execution leaves a little something to be desired. For example, we're in the 1800s. And we have a girl who invents words, so that when the author can't think of any word but 'snark' to describe someone's language, we hear, 3rd-hand, that this word has been invented. Which just leaves me feeling that the author is being lazy at her job. For this, and too many other things that throw you right out of the time period, I just can't rate it any higher.

#2 in the seires

Review: I really enjoyed the second book of the Series of Unfortunate Events . I laughed out loud several times. I will be continuing on with this series. I need to find out what happened to the Baudelaire children and if Count Olaf ever pays for his evil acts.

Week 10
Spot 82
Sealed with a Kiss
#2 in Ty and Hunter series
8/6/17
Review: This was an okay book. I really like this author but this is one of her earlier books and wasn't as subtle. Things were not built up, just presented. I liked the characters, I just thought they changed too abruptly so some of the things they said weren't a good fit. This is the last book in the series and I will be glad to read some of Carly Phillips' newer books.

Spot 82, Alternate Europe
Death of a Policeman
Alternate Europe - set in Scotland

Review: This is the 29h book in the Hamish Macbeth series. I love this series and the character Hamish. In this episode, Chief Inspector Blair has it out for Hamish and tries to catch him doing something bad. But Hamish isn't stupid. He actually finds the killer, saves Blair, keeps secrets, helps his co-worker find love, and tries to save his own romantic relationship. If you've never read this series and you like cozy mysteries, you should give it a try.

Anne is back at it again in the second book in the series. This was a reread for me but I honestly didn't remember any of the plot whatsoever. Little Davy had my soul and I cried tears of joy when they got to keep him for real. I loved this book but it wasn't the masterpiece Anne of Green Gables was so I gave it four stars.

Bonus Point for reading 3 books in a series - Laura
Bonus Point for not reading any alternates - Laura, Cathy, Sandy

But, if we do this spot we'll have 2 bonus points. Assuming we roll at least 9 next time, that would be our last roll, giving us the bonus point for not reading an Alternate (I know I've done that, and I think at least one of you guys has done that, too). That's a total of 3 bonus points, so rolling a 9 next time around would put us over 100!
