Identifying Genre of This Story

Hello all,
I need help defining the genre of a story, one where the main characters are talking animals, but the story itself has mature themes and a mature plot. It's definitely not G-rated, so I wouldn't call it a children's book, but then would an adult read something by a talking animal? When I look up "A Dog's Purpose," it just says Fiction, and "Watership Down" comes up as Fiction, Fantasy, etc.
What's your take? Thanks in advance!
