Welcome to Harper's Tale bookclub/group. This week our focus is on discussing our expectations and aim as a group and further which book we want to start reading together. Feel free to comment and make suggestions.

Rachyl (norsulaulu) Hello!
My expectation going into this was that I was actually looking for a sort of intimate group to discuss books with. In larger groups there tends not to be a lot of interaction between the thoughts people are having about the books and I don't like that, I want more of a conversation.
As for what book we should read, I'm really not that picky. Were we going to pick a theme first, or just suggest some books that we wanted to read?

Hi Rachyl!
The idea of an intimate conversations is my hope for this group as it makes the experience a little more personal. We can start with books we want to read this year and from those choose one for the month.

Rachyl (norsulaulu) Alright, well there's nothing I'm really dying to read at the moment, but I'll list a couple that I'm interested in and if any jump out at you guys let me know. But if there's something you're really excited for you should definitely say.

Also, disclaimer: I don't really read most of the synopsis of a book because I find there are often little spoilers I don't want to know about, so I only have a vauge idea of what any of these books are about. I pick books based on what people recommend to me, ratings, title, cover, author, etc.

The Sellout
Dodger
Boy, Snow, Bird
Night
Beloved
American Gods
The Nest

I think that's a pretty good mix. Let me know if any of them interest you!

Ok nice. most of those seems to be historical fiction which is one of my fav genres. For me I have on my list
Here be dragons
The keeper of lost things
Neverwhere
Where good girls go to die (Good girls #1)

Rachyl (norsulaulu) Neverwhere has also been on my to-read list for a while, and The Keeper of Lost Things also looks like something that I would absolutely be interested in reading.
Who's the author of Here be Dragons? There's a lot of books on here called that so I'm not sure which one you're referring to.

Here be Dragons by Sharon Kay Penman. Its a historical fiction/romance.

Rachyl (norsulaulu) Okay, I just looked at it, and it does look like something I would be interested in reading, the only thing for me is that my library doesn't have it. They have other Pennman books, but unfortunately that isn't one of them. So, because of this I would prefer if we read something else.

Rachyl (norsulaulu) Oh, and hi Antonia! Even if you don't have any books you want to put forward right now you can still look through the ones Karis and I mentioned and see if any of those jumps out at you. Or if there's any you absolutely are not interested in. That would help us narrow it down.

Ok I understand.
So far I like;
Beloved
American Gods

Oh and I actually have a soft copy of Here be Dragons in case anyone wants it still.

I think American Gods and The keeper of lost things are of common interests. American Gods sounds like a good place to start to me. Just need confirmation from everyone else.

No Problem.

Rachyl (norsulaulu) American Gods sounds good to me. Were we going to start now or are we waiting for the start of next month? Either works fine for me, I just wasn't sure what the plan was.

We can give everyone time to get the book and then start reading. Is one week to get the book fine with everyone?

message 16: by Rachyl (new)

Rachyl (norsulaulu) That works for me; this is one I own, so I can get going whenever!

Is everyone fine with us reading the first 5 chapters and having a discussion a week from now?
