I guess it works, though I really made that "ooh" of "ooh la la"?
Also, my confused sound usually goes "ahm" xD

I mean for screaming I use AHHH and then some random letters to show I’m excited! I finally finished Impossible Knife of Memory! It was pretty good and now I started Clockwork Prince (FINALLY HOLY SHIT) and I miss these characters so much.

message 253: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments Yay! I need to pick Clockwork Prince back up. Might end up just picking up the audiobook.

I just finished:

American Panda by Gloria Chao
The Good Twin by Marti Green

Both were four stars! Both were just super enjoyable, nothing spectacular, but I had fun reading them both!

And I'm starting:

Truly Devious (Truly Devious, #1) by Maureen Johnson (audio)
This Savage Song (Monsters of Verity, #1) by Victoria Schwab ( I REALLY shouldn't be starting another series...)

Aim is to finish these both off this week because then I have the Buzzword Readathon starting on Monday and I'm super keen for my TBR.

But I am so on top of my TBR! No reading 12 books at once! I am still in shock! I am also pretty sure this is going to go down in a blaze of glory and a ginormous pile of books before the month is out.

message 254: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 768 comments Mod
OMG THIS SAVAGE SONG IS SO GOOD! We need to have a talk afterwards! Tell me how Truly Devious goes so I can get it for myself or not!

I haven’t read all day but I have been baking and hanging out with my best friend so it was a great day. But I’m so happy for you, being on track with your TBR.

I decided to stay off challenges because I realize I get extremely competitive and I focus on completing the challenge instead of reading the books I love. So I try to stray away but I love readathons so I want to try one. See what will happen.

message 255: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments @Ilsen, that sounds like so much fun. God I haven't baked anything in years.

I'll let you know how Savage Song goes. Going to pick it up tonight. And Truly Devious is really interesting at the moment. I purposefully didn't read the blurb again so I'm am so clueless about what the story actually is haha.

Yeah, I've changed my approach with readathons and challenges. I love them too much to give them up completely, but I've definitely cut back. I only jump in on ones that I know of at least 2 weeks in advance so I have plenty of time to organize a TBR. I always try to join ones that I can use some books already on my shelf/ereader and make up the rest with books already on my TBR that I can borrow through the library (physical or ebook/audio).

I feel so much less stressed about completing the challenges this way and can enjoy them so much more! Plus I love that my boyfriend gets involved now, asking how much I've read and what I'm reading and making sure I have tonnes of free time to read as much as I can. He's a freaking cinnamon roll that one.

message 256: by Tal (new)

Tal Heyman I'm finishing the series Legend. On Champion now!

Omg my friend read it and he thought it was ok but I really want to try it for myself!! He’s not much of a YA reader so I feel like I would enjoy it more than he would!

I am reading

Clockwork Prince which I took a pause on so my friends can catch up
The Darkest Minds which I might finish today and I am doing a buddy read on Twitter
Second Chance Summer which is really intriguing and I really want to finish it soon
Plague Land which I have been on since January and might just DNF but I want to give it one more chance.

message 261: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments As soon as I finish off GMOS&G I'll get back into Clockwork Prince again. Probably from the beginning haha.

You are so dedicated to Plague land! I would have DNFd and donated the book by now!

message 262: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 768 comments Mod
Yay!!! I don't blame you from starting from the beginning. It has been a while XD I mostly just look at the spoilery discussions to catch up.

Hahahaha Becca! You crack me up. I think the real reason I haven't DNF'ed is because I got this book for free from an Instagram giveaway I won and it's an ARC! I just feel bad but at the same time I am not sure. Also, I haven't had time to dive back into it. Other books have been keeping me occupied.

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments I feel like I've been reading the same three books for AGES

The Beauty That Remains by Ashley Woodfolk : audio; it's really great but I'm not enjoying it as much because I just don't want a contemporary right now, picked this up at a bad time
Clockwork Prince (The Infernal Devices, #2) by Cassandra Clare : actually enjoying this one; buddy read; feels like I've been reading forever bc BR was put on hold and returning to it
This Savage Song (Monsters of Verity, #1) by Victoria Schwab ; enjoying it but I have been reading but not really reading this forever; my library ebook runs out tomorrow and I'm only halfway through; I'm going to have to change to the Scribd copy, which means iPad, which means probably procrastination

This Savage Song is so good!! I hope you finish it soon! Sorry for the hold up for The Clockwork Prince. I’m enjoying it too. Much better than Clockwork Angel.

I’m reading Leah on the Offbeat (which I’m enjoying a lot), To Kill a Kingdom (just started but intrigued), Clockwork Prince, and Psych: A Guide go Crime Fighting (just something fun to flip through).

I’m also going to start the novellas for The Darkest Minds and Never Fade soon.

message 268: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments I'm getting through it pretty quickly now, I just don't think I'll make it before the library book expires haha. And 100% CP is better than CA.

Hmmm for some reason I never felt pulled by The Beauty that remains, and some booktuber/bookbloggers made it seem like, since it was about 3 characters, that there was something missing? But I'll wait until you get to the end.

You guys are just enjoying CP more, because the tragic past and motives were revealed xD *joking*

To Kill a Kingdom has been at the top3 books I wanted this year!!

And started One of Us is Lying audiobook.

Speaking of books one's been reading forever: Dexter's Final Cut. I can't believe I haven't finished it or the series yet!! Ugh

I am interested in A Beauty That Remains but I’ve heard mixed reviews. I will still like to try it though. I will await your review.

Also yes you aren’t wrong. I do love all the things being revealed to me. I barely started To Kill a Kingdom but I really want to get a good part of it soon!

message 272: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments @Regsly & Ilsen: I finished it, I objectively loved the book a lot, but didn't enjoy because I just wasn't in the headspace to read a contemp but wanted it done and off my CR list. Aiming to have a review for the blog on Monday... will see how that goes.

message 273: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments @Hanna: How's that going? Are you enjoying the series? I swear I will get to it eventually (she said about her towering TBR pile)

I am currently reading
sunfish by Shelby Eileen Dress Codes for Small Towns by Courtney C. Stevens

One is an ARC and one is a book club read. I also started The Woman in the Window on audio but I haven't decided if I'm committed enough to add it to my TBR. Life is busy so reading isn't fantastic right now and I have no idea what mood I am currently in.

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments I miss this group! D:

I am currently reading
Picnic at Hanging Rock by Joan Lindsay : which I am halfway through but have not picked up since reading the first half. I WILL finish it because at least that can be my tick for classics for a while.

Suicide Notes from Beautiful Girls by Lynn Weingarten : I will probably finish this tonight. I actually have really enjoyed the story, even though I kinda hate all the characters?

Monday's Not Coming by Tiffany D. Jackson : I will be starting this audiobook tonight when I get to drive home and I am so KEEN. Had this on hold for so long.

Becca!! Omg hi! I miss this group too!

I’m currently reading:

Final Draft by Riley Redgate: I like it but I’m not that interested to see the end. But it is starting to pick up so hopefully I’ll get back to it soon.

Gabi, A Girl In Pieces by Isabel Quintero: Ehhh the issues are important to discuss but I don’t like most of the characters. Gabi is just so immature and selfish.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han: This is so cute! I do have some problems with it but they are tiny! I hope to continue this one soon!

I’m planning on reading Circe when I have the chance but I do have homework to do.

message 289: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments I haven't heard of the first two but I did kinda love To All the Boys I've Loved Before, even though it's the type of book I would typically skip over. It's just so easy to read and fluffy.

And I just got Circe from the library! Don't know when I'll pick it up but so keen after seeing so many people rave about it.

I was reading Hot Dog Girl by Jennifer Dugan - meh, which is disappointing (finished it last night after night-job)

Reading:
Rock Heaven (Doormaker, #1) by Jamie Thornton - super slow read. I'm forcing myself to keep at it, because I'm part of the reviewing team but omg. Idk.. the characters are young, unlike the girl in the cover, like MG-tween young. And the book is way harsher to them, than if you were reading Harry Potter (HP tones everything down somehow), which realness, but it makes me so uncomfortable. Also, everything is a jumble and I don't care about the characters ugh. The concept is interesting though. Maybe once we actually get into the lore and make sense of all this??

Hocus Pocus by Paul Kieve - hardcover I can carry. So you guys prolly don't know I love Illusionists ha! The book itself was done with such care and detail, it will really draw kids in. Now, obviously Kieve isn't a writer, an editor could've helped more with the final product. But it's still not horrible and it is plenty informative.

When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon - was reading it and disliking it so much, I took a pause :v Gotta finish

Looking at this list, it looks down right depressing lmaoooo

Gonna start:

Crush (Awkward, #3) by Svetlana Chmakova - I've read the other 2 in this MG series on my off-days, and loved them!! And I've been loving Svetlana's stuff for years, so I'm not worried about this one

Ilsen | 768 comments Mod
Omg no!! I don’t want to hear Hot Dog Girl is disappointing! I’ve been wanting to read that one for ages but it’s making me scared. Same for When Dimple Met Rishi :(

I’m currently reading Dork Diaries as a reread and I’m loving it. I really want to finish this series

message 293: by Bec (new)

Bec (_becandbooks) | 473 comments I keep seeing poor reviews about Hot Dog Girl and almost everyone has said that it's just boring. Kinda sucks because everytime I see it I kinda get Geekerella vibes. I didn't mind Dimple Met Rishi - I'm not a contemporary/romance fan really but it was cute as an audio to pass the time.

I just finished We Set the Dark on Fire (We Set the Dark on Fire, #1) by Tehlor Kay Mejia and I really loved it. One of those books that I am still thinking about even after it's finished!

I'm reading Sadie by Courtney Summers and The Forest Queen by Betsy Cornwell which are both good so far. And started the audio of Again, but Better by Christine Riccio which was cute until I just started getting to problematic part and I get what everyone is saying......

message 294: by Ilsen (new)

Ilsen | 768 comments Mod
Damn that sucks for Hot Dog Girl because that was one of my most anticipated releases. I still want to try it though. I’m a sucker for contemporary so I want to try When Dimple Met Rishi too.

There’s a problematic part in Again But Better? I haven’t read it but my friend has and she flew through it. She thought it was super cute. I mean we were also Swifties and there was a lot of Taylor references so that’s exciting for me. But I want to get to that one too eventually.

I wanted to get We Set The Dark on Fire but probably on my nook because the sandpaper texture of the book is not pleasant. I’m glad you loved it! I also want to read Sadie too!

I'm more than halfway through and it's just the entire storyline about the male MC having a girlfriend while there is a potentially developing romance with the female MC. It's not entirely comfortable. But the actual writing and the rest of the book is cute.

The Half-blood Reader (half_bloodreader) | 948 comments Mod
With HDG, most of the time nothing was really happening. I didn't have trouble reading it out of boredom, but I wasn't engaged either. It wasn't cute, it wasn't amusing, it wasn't infuriating... the book just was.

For When Dimple Met Rishi, I mean.. I guess I should expect Rishi to have a certain way of thinking since he's an Indian boy, and there's certain mentalities the parents carry with them. But while some ppl lost their marvels with Dimple, I lost them with him.
Assuming the girl must drop everything for the boy and stuff grrr *flips table*

I'm on the lookout for Sadie being cheaper, and I almost bought We Set The Dark On Fire the other day, but it's a series, and I'm trying to refrain from starting new ones ;__;

I should start sharing with you guys which books I have so buddyreads are easier to pull off someday xD

And I saw a lot of people criticizing Again But Better. Including the fact that Christine basically wrote about herself... a character like herself

And I started Um Crime no Expresso do Oriente by Agatha Christie (Murder on the Orient Express)

message 298: by Aristotle (new)

Aristotle (ari-is-costanza) | 3 comments I'm currently reading 3 books.

Matterhorn by Karl Marlantes

Matterhorn by Karl Martlantes

A story of an Officer deployed to Vietnam. Generally speaking he has to look after his men and himself, while struggling with the world around him. The story does feature other characters too and is not told from an exclusive or first person perspective.

Very much enjoying this one. Apparently it took him a long time, several decades, to write it. Usually with war fiction there's a large disconnect between what I know of actual life stories and what's being created in fiction. So far it has not been the case in this book.

It helps that I already know the author. I've seen him in documentaries, forwards, quotes from other books and so on. He's a respected name in both fiction and non-fiction.

In this book the characters feel real. Nobody seems to be a simple tool of the plot. It's also very descriptive in how it writes about the environment around the characters and how they feel inside.

Reads great with ambient sound of jungles and rain too.

Nietzsche Philosopher, Psychologist, Antichrist by Walter Kaufmann

Nietzsche by Walter Kaufmann

I've had an amateur interest in philosophy since high school. One such thinker that interested me a lot is Nietzsche. I've read a few of his books directly but a lot of it is difficult to connect and comprehend.

This book I decided to pick up to better understand both the man and his creations. So far it has proven very interesting. The writer Kaufmann is clearly very well educated on the topic and provides plenty of sources and footnotes.

I always have issues rating non-fiction books as they don’t review as fiction books do. I tend to just give 5 stars if I learned something and they're structured well. Mainly because I'm not an authority to dispute the contents. So that'll probably be what happens with this one.

Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts

Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts

This was a recommendation from a friend. It's a fictional story based on the true life experiences of an Australian ex-con after he escaped prison here in Melbourne and fled to Bombay (Mumbai) in India.

Mixed feelings so far. The book is quite long. 387,047 words, making it almost as long as 4 average novels. I don't really know if this length is justified. So far it doesn't seem so but I'll find out by the end.

I've never read a novel set in India before, so my main interest in this book comes from learning about the culture there. Especially because it is through the eyes of an Australian man like myself. I must say that so far it has been mostly boring. But there seems to be promise of a pick up down the line.

And thats all of them!

I'm not too great at describing this stuff off the dome. I do have a review site but haven't published a review in almost a year now...

Definitely can understand the frustrations with Hot Dog Girl and When Dimple Met Rishi. I still love forming my own opinions about the book so I still want to give it a try. I have Sadie and I really want to read it. I’m trying this new thing where I get my unread books from the ones I owned down to a decent number. I have 178 unread from 270 owned books which means it’s 65% unread (not counting my Nook). So I want to try to get all the books I own read. Which means I’m on a book buying ban.

Anyways, I still want to read Again But Better even though I heard Christine made the character off herself. It’s still not bad for a debut. I’m so glad you’re reading Murder on the Orient Express! I love that book and the movie is great! Aristotle, those sound like interesting books! I’m glad you’re liking some.

I’m currently reading still Gabi, A Girl In Pieces and To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before but today I’m going to start The Lost Sisters by Holly Black and Love From A to Z by S.K. Ali
