SOLVED. Orphans running away from caretakers mystery child found in mud? [s]

I'm looking for a book I read years ago, around elementary or middle school (I am 23) It was about a group of (I think they were) orphans that ran away from the place they were staying and I think they were on some sort of makeshift raft on a river? I remember I think they found another boy or girl like in the mud, but he or she couldn't talk. I know this is very vague but this is all I can remember and this is the only place I could think of to help look for this book.
