Fantasy - unlikable main character is a criminal of some sort and studies alchemy or some form of magic. Spoiler ahead.

The cover of the book was blue, had a man (supposedly the protagonist). The main character (I want to say his name started with a B) was a criminal of some sort and wasn't likeable. He went on to study some form or magic or alchemy. At the end of the book he does in some sort of cave in or fallen building perhaps?
REALLY trying to figure this book out. Last name of the author possibly starts with a G.
