After discovering the Vorkosigan Saga, Snow Crash, Old Man's War The Culture Series, A Song Called Youth, The Expanse Trilogy, The Hyperion books and rereading The Forever War I'm trying to find more Science Fiction novels that combine exciting action with smart/smartly executed story telling. Now to clear things up, by "action" I don't necessarily mean Military Sci-Fi(although those shouldn't be excluded) I'd like more variety like cyberpunk or present based science fiction.

I do have a passion for David Weber's military sci-fi series, Honor Harrington. Lots of physics in this. I also love his Safehold sci-fi for the creativity, politics, and inventiveness versus hidebound religion. For current-day, humorous sci-fi, I've enjoyed Gini Koch's Katherine "Kitty" Katt series.

comes to mind."One of the best military SF books in history (and one of the worst movie adaptations). Another good (and more recent) military SF is John Bower's
Star Marine.
If you want sci-fi action without the heavy military aspect take a look at Becoming Nadia by Cyrus Keith.
Try Daniel Keys Moran Continuing Time series that starts with Emerald Eyes or the more recent James S.A. Corey Expanse series beginning with Leviathan Wakes.
No fighting in this one, but in a way every moment is about survival in The Martian. Extreme chemistry, physics and botany appear, as well as duct tape - great sense of humor, especially in the audio version.
Try Michael Flynn's Spiral Arm series: The January Dancer, Up Jim River, In the Lion's Mouth, and On the Razor's Edge. Thus far. But all the stories are intact, even if reading them in order is wise.
I really enjoyed a book called Wanderers Escape by Simon Goodson. It's free as of this posting too. http://www.amazon.com/Wanderers-Escap...
