It's all the books I took from the library. I'll get through most but not today!

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? Brooklyn NY
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? Crooked Kingdom
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? I have leftover pizza. It was supposed to fresh, but I wanted it last night. Oops
4) Tell us a little something about yourself! I'm part of a Sci-fi book club that's doing a creepy short story list month. Perfect for this RAT.
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to? I got a late start this morning because I volunteered at a race, but I have a much clearer schedule this RAT than others, so i'm excited about that!

Shelley | 123 comments It's the end of the fifth hour and I have read for 3.25 hours. I finished Liar which was interesting. There was a big twist halfway through that if I had paid attention to the book classification I would have noticed, but as it was, I had no idea. That was a kinda awesome twist. My audio book for this readathon is War and Peace. I'm (according to my book version) on page 428 of 1326 and finally getting into it. This is why I use audiobooks for classics. It forces me to keep going even when I'm bored and then can switch to a written version once it grabs me. Next I think I'll go with Lock In. Like Liar, it is one of my oldest TBR and I'm using the RAT to push it through and saving the ones I really want to read for tonight.

With classics I can either listen to them well or my mind strays frequently. It really depends on the classic! I haven't tried to tackle W&P yet. Good luck!

Kate (kathrynlouwca) I love the variety you have! You're doing great! Happy reading!

message 55: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments Lock In was awesome! It had a great premise, great characters, a great detective mystery, just great. I hadn't even realized I participated in the Sprint because I was so focused on the book for the full hour. Sigh. I need to spend some time on here decompressing before starting something else. The temptation is strong to read the sequel.

Shelley | 123 comments Mid-Event Survey:
1. What are you reading right now? I just finished The Carpenter from Montreal. Right now I'm listening to War and Peace (which I'm really not enjoying). Once I'm done my social media check in I'm going to start on my creepy short stories for my Oct book club.
2. How many books have you read so far? 3 Liar, Lock In, and The Carpenter from Montreal
3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon?Crooked Kingdom
4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? I started late because I had a very early event this morning. It also means I took a 45 minute nap at 10 this morning. Now I'm going strong though!
5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? IT's been awhile since I've been able to participate so fully, so I'm enjoying that. I've decided not to go to my thing tomorrow, so I'm going to try to stay up as long as possible. I'm really looking forward to not setting a 5 am alarm for at least once this week.

Virginia (vlgrantham) | 48 comments You've made such great progress so far! Good luck with the second half of the readathon!

message 58: by Cora (new)

Cora (corareading) | 128 comments I loved Lock In too. The sequel Head On is good to, but I like Lock In a little better. Keep up the good work.

Shelley | 123 comments I"m doing some mini challenges while listening to The Town Manager by Thomas Ligotti.

My haiku:
Chasing the Dragon
War and Peace, Crooked Kingdom
City of Darkness

I'm rather proud of this one.

For Deweys Escape of angsty teen books: Anyone else ever heard of
Demon in My View (Den of Shadows, #2) by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes In the Forests of the Night (Den of Shadows, #1) by Amelia Atwater-Rhodes

Good to know. I added it to my TBR list and was tempted to jump right into it. Glad I didn't.

Shelley | 123 comments One of these days I won't pass out, but apparently it won't be the day that I had woken up 4 hours early. After 5 hours of sleeping I'm back to Crooked Kingdom

message 64: by Shelley (last edited Oct 21, 2018 05:24AM) (new)

Shelley | 123 comments 1. Which hour was most daunting for you? Hour 18 is where I gave up
2. Tell us ALLLLL the books you read! Liar, Lock In, The Carpenter from Montreal, The Grownup The Town Manager, 75% of Crooked Kingdom, 2 books of War and Peace a total of 16.75 hours and 1,682 pages
3. Which books would you recommend to other Read-a-thoners? Lock In and Crooked Kingdom
4. What’s a really rad thing we could do during the next Read-a-thon that would make you happy? Bingo was awesome. It created a nice checklist of things to do which wasn't overwhelming.
5. How likely are you to participate in the Read-a-thon again? Would you be interested in volunteering to help organize and prep? I will be participating and I may actually be able to help out next time.

message 66: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments Lack of planning on other people's part means that I have absolutely no idea how much I'll be able to participate this year and it's driving me crazy. I'll have a much better idea the week of, but it means no real planning for the next three weeks. That said, I'm going on a solo camping trip in two weeks, so lots of book planning for that! I'm totally ready for the pre-RAT tasks!

Shelley | 123 comments OK, I'm feeling better about this. My Sunday is the now traditional super busy, so I won't be staying up all night, but Saturday is all clear as of right now.

Books that I'm really hoping to have finished by end of Friday:
Gardens of the Moon (Malazan Book of the Fallen, #1) by Steven Erikson -finished
The Blade Itself (The First Law, #1) by Joe Abercrombie -finished
Who Fears Death (Who Fears Death, #1) by Nnedi Okorafor -finished
Dark Places by Gillian Flynn -finished

TBR
A Dangerous Collaboration (Veronica Speedwell #4) by Deanna Raybourn -finished
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell -finished
Last Train to Istanbul by Ayşe Kulin -finished
Monstress, Vol. 2 The Blood (Monstress, #2) by Marjorie M. Liu -finished
Monstress, Vol. 3 Haven (Monstress, #3) by Marjorie M. Liu
Rhett & Link's Book of Mythicality A Field Guide to Curiosity, Creativity, and Tomfoolery by Rhett McLaughlin
Stars Above (The Lunar Chronicles, #4.5) by Marissa Meyer -finished
The Last Days of Night by Graham Moore
The Perilous Life of Jade Yeo by Zen Cho -finished
The Strange Case of the Alchemist's Daughter (The Extraordinary Adventures of the Athena Club, #1) by Theodora Goss
Woman at Point Zero by Nawal El-Saadawi -finished

I have a final list! I'll be able to get all of the book BINGOs with Fangirl, Monstress 2, Stars Above, and The Perilous Life of Jade Yeo,so it still gives me some wiggle room.

message 69: by Elyse (new)

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 2454 comments Good choices! I also picked out shorter books. October I read Stephen King so those are long books but April I stick with shorter books and graphic novels.

message 70: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments 1. What part of the world? Houston, TX
2. What book are you most looking forward to? A Dangerous Collaboration, although its low on my need to get to for list purposes so helpfully I'll read it today.
3. What snack are you most looking forward to? I'm going to a beer pub for lunch which should be good.
4. Normally I'm a big planner for these things but today I've got a whole bunch for smaller books today so I may be scrambling towards the end.
5. This RAT is my first one in my new city, so while the big picture of different cafes and a run to start is the same, its in all new places.

message 71: by Elyse (new)

Elyse (winesaboutbooks) | 2454 comments Sounds exciting to be in a new place! I flipping loved A Dangerous Collaboration so I hope you get to it! It will keep you captivated!

message 72: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments MidRAT Survey
1. What are you reading? Fangirl audiobook. I think I'm going to start A Dangerous Collaboration next.
2. How many books have you read? 5 in total Woman at Point Zero, Stars Above, Monstress, Vol. 2: The Blood, Last Train to Istanbul, and The Perilous Life of Jade Yeo
3. What book are you most excited for? A Dangerous Collaboration I saw the author last month so my copy is actually signed. I'm excited to see this most recent adventure and hopefully there will be a damned kiss in it!
4. How have you handled interuptions? I didn't sleep well last night so I took an hour nap. I haven't really had any other interuptions.
5. What surprised you about about this RAT? My laptop is acting up so I'm working on my super slow touchpad. It's made it very difficult to be on social media and responding to people. On the plus side, this is why I've had so few interuptions!

message 73: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments I'm supposed to run a casual 5k race tomorrow morning but fingers crossed it's going to be cancelled due to weather, because....it's now 1.45 and I have half an hour left in my audiobook (Fangirl. I'm really enjoying it and identifying way to much. I have to finish it before sleeping!

message 74: by Shelley (last edited Apr 07, 2019 05:17AM) (new)

Shelley | 123 comments alisonwonderland wrote: "Ha! :)

Jasper Fforde is one of my favorite authors. and it's about time to reread the series.

Generally for these things, I start pulling books within the 3 week checkout window for the RAT. They are specifically chosen to be easy and fun reads, which makes it really easy to read them early, too. Oops.

message 82: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments I did not read nearly as much in the past week as a I thought, so I only finished Grasshopper Jungle from my TBR. I'm really hoping that this RAT is going to jump start my reading again.

1) What fine part of the world are you reading from today? Houston TX
2) Which book in your stack are you most looking forward to? I'm halfway through Tomorrow's Kin and enjoying it, so really looking forward to sitting down and actually finishing it.
3) Which snack are you most looking forward to? I'm up early enough that I will actually be able to go to a breakfast spot and try their french toast. I've tried a few times and gotten annoyed at the lines.
4) Tell us a little something about yourself! I have a great love of the library and have a worksheet keeping track of my three wishlists on them.
5) If you participated in the last read-a-thon, what’s one thing you’ll do different today? If this is your first read-a-thon, what are you most looking forward to? This is the first time that I don't really have anything planned today, which also has allowed me to be an hourly moderator. Hopefully I will be able to uphold the standard of the group!

Nadia Batista (booksbynadia) | 86 comments Hey Shelley :) I always tell everyone that during Dewey's I don't exist, so to me it's pretty easy to make plans... or not make them :) This is my first time co-hosting hourly discussions at Goodreads, so let's see how it goes! I hope you are having an amazing time during Dewey's :)

message 85: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments I have finished my 2 co-hosting hours, finished 2 books, and got the black-out bingo. What am i supposed to do with the second half ?!?!? Besides sleep of course.

The Future Is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia - interesting but there were definitely some slow parts.

Fables & Reflections - I whined about this in the hour topic, but I'm not a Neil Gaiman fan even though everything says I should be. That said, this one was amazing! It's gems like this that explain why I put up with being disappointed by him.

Gaiman and Douglas aren't really for me. I just don't get dry British humor, I guess. There are some Gaiman I like and I keep trying to finish the Hitchhiker's Guide series.

That's just it! I love Pratchett and Douglas, and Jasper Fforde and Ben Arronovitch are my absolute favorite. Gaiman is normally mentioned in the same categories. Yet here I am.

message 88: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments 1. What are you reading right now? Tomorrow's Kin
2. How many books have you read so far? 2 The Future Is History: How Totalitarianism Reclaimed Russia and Fables & Reflections
3. What book are you most looking forward to for the second half of the Read-a-thon? I need to finish Stand on Zanzibar. It's interesting enough that I want to finish it, but it's just so bloated that I've been dragging my feet.
4. Have you had many interruptions? How did you deal with those? I had to get toilet paper, but I wore headphones for my audio book.
5. What surprises you most about the Read-a-thon, so far? I looked down about 20 minutes ago and realised I was hugging my teddy bear that I "read" to for bingo. I got it when I was 3 and it's been packed away for about 14 years. Why the hell is it still so natural just to just hold her while reading?

message 89: by Shelley (new)

Shelley | 123 comments I've finished Stand on Zanzibar and Tomorrow's Kin. I wasn't a fan of either of them, but especially Stand on Zanzibar (that ending almost made me through my kindle across the room). I'm about to head to bed because I have an early morning.

The books that I read today weren't great, but I managed to finish the three that had been causing a blockage, because I wasn't a fan of them. In that sense, it's been a very productive read-a-thon.
