This is the 13th book in Winspear’s popular Maisie Dobbs detective series, popular enough to keep this book on the New York Times bestseller list for two weeks. In this book Maisie has returned to London and is running her detective agency with her familiar cohorts. She is presented with a new, and highly sensitive murder case on the day that war with Germany is declared, again.
I thought this was one of the best stories in the series so far. This series started with the aftermath of WW1. Winspear’s characters feel authentic in their reactions to the prospect of yet another war. The mystery was good, although the solution was a bit disappointing. The plot of this story was less contrived and more believable than the plots of the last two books! As usual it was the historical setting and the interaction of the characters that held my interest. Winspear is very good at tying almost all of her plots back to Maisie’s WW1 experiences, but in this book that earlier history is especially important. I’m sure I’ll keep reading as Maisie battles through WW2.
