The main character meets a new friend at school, they go to her house and find that her new friend's home life isn't great. I believe her mom's boyfriend was abusive? The main character wants her new friend to move in with her. The main character just lives with her dad and (maybe) grandma. I don't remember much else, but I remember they talk about the song "American Pie." It ends with the two girls happy and writing stories and it is revealed that the narrator is writing the story we are reading at the end. I remember distinctly that she talks about how her friend is writing with a pencil, but she is writing with a pen because she likes the sound of the pen on the paper better. I read this in about 2011-2012 when I was in 6th grade so it would be around that reading level, and it's a chapter book, I would maybe consider it a YA novel.
