PepperP0t | 539 comments the iron druid chronicles (Kevin Hearne) -- oberon the wolfhound is a character and another joins later in the series. he's in practically every book and is part of the story

these have appearances and not integral to storyline
cascadia wolves (Lauren Dane) -- one of the wolves has a 3 legged lab
carver's problem (BL Brooklyn) -- wolf stuck as wolf dog but only for a couple of chapters.

Dahrose | 73 comments You have to try Jane Cousins Southern Sanctuary Series - think there are like nine books.

Invisible sheep. Match making cats. A rock with an attitude problem (yes, you read that right) Sentient bridesmaids dresses. Some books feature the 'pets' more than others, but all have a heap of fun, humour and hot romances.

Start with book one - To Woo A Warrior (Southern Sanctuary, #1) by Jane Cousins To Woo A Warrior.

Recommend reading series in order as there are running gags and secondary characters to meet along the way who are lots of fun.

Mercy Thompson has a pet cat who likes werewolves and vampires. Moon Called (although that's UF rather than PNR)

I've just started reading The Arrival and there is a pet dog and cat in that one. (I've just started and haven't decided if I like it yet or not, but thought I'd toss it out for you.)

OMG. I love Brodie Hawaii. Who wouldn't love a flying pit bull? And Hilda the goat is cute.

I was going to mention this series but you beat me to it.

Love the Southern Sanctuary series - the hot, hot guys matched up with strong, sassy women - and so many laughs.

Jane Jameson in Molly Harper's series has a pet dog. These are very funny stories. Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs is book 1

message 18: by Britt B (new)

Britt B (brittb626) Demonslayer series: DemonFire by Kate Douglas.

message 19: by Timelord Iain (new)

Timelord Iain If we're throwing gargoyles into the mix... doesn't Hollows add a gargoyle around book 7-10? Dead Witch Walking

Kate Daniels has a shapeshifting dog that turns into a bigger scarier dog... added to the story in book 4 I think: Magic Bleeds

Heartstrikers has a ghost cat that is more than it at first appears: Nice Dragons Finish Last

A lot of the Four Horsemen in the Lords of Deliverance spin-off from the Demonica series have domesticated hellhounds for pets: Eternal Rider

Harry Dresden has normal cat, magic Temple Dog, and talking skull: Storm Front

I used this Listopia list as a refresher of the books I've read that met the criteria... there are a few on here that look like PnR... only half of my suggestions were, but that seems par for the course with this thread: https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/1...

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 451 comments How about Brodie Hawaii, the flying pit bull, in the Call of Crows series by Shelly Laurenston?

message 23: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Wheeler | 386 comments I love when the main characters have a special relationship with an animal, especially cats, dogs, or hunting birds. Horses can also be fun in certain circumstances. I love animals. If a book has the animal being mistreated or killed it ruins the whole story for me.

message 24: by Chessela (new)

Chessela Helm | 43 comments Elizabeth wrote: "I love when the main characters have a special relationship with an animal, "

Me, too. Because I have pets, I want the characters I read and write to have pets. I actually find it hard to write main characters that don't have pets. I think I've only written one heroine who didn't have a cat or dog, and writing about her apartment was hard because she had no pet to feed and talk to!

The Midnight, Texas trilogy by Charlaine Harris Midnight Crossroad (Midnight, Texas, #1) by Charlaine Harris has a cat that is not your run of the mill feline. You don't get as much of the cat in book 1 iirc, but he shows up more in 3.

The little girl Bea has a dog that isn't exactly a normal dog.

message 26: by Marishka (new)

Marishka Grayson | 15 comments It's interesting...for dark paranormal romance, I almost prefer no pets. I've such a passion for animals, that I'm worried they might come to harm even if it's in just 2-dimensional literature. Same goes for movies - can't bare to see them hurt. They seem like frightened, unwilling participants in a dark world, even if they are powerful. It's human agency that is most interesting to me, because we have the will and the intelligence to act/or not act on our impulse and choose to do good over evil. Although, on second thought an evil, magic weaving chicken might be a good choice for a book!

Agree 100%. If the animal dies, it ruins the book or movie for me. I just can't get past it.

message 28: by Josie (new)

Josie Jaffrey (josiejaffrey) | 56 comments I'm exactly the same. If a character I like dies, I might get a bit upset, but if a pet dies then I'll be in tears and find it hard to carry on with the book. Illogical, but there it is.

message 29: by Marishka (last edited Jun 24, 2017 03:32PM) (new)

Marishka Grayson | 15 comments I think it could be because it's the death of innocence. Pets are usually without guile, without ulterior motive, they simply are.

message 30: by Josie (new)

Josie Jaffrey (josiejaffrey) | 56 comments I think they're also often a repository for hope in fiction. For example, you often have characters who don't get on well with people, or who are recovering from bad experiences, and who form very close bonds to their pets as a result. When their pets die, it's not just the death of the animal that's upsetting, but also the tragedy of that lost bond that was so integral to them.

message 31: by Marishka (new)

Marishka Grayson | 15 comments Yes, you're absolutely right. They are symbols of hope and I just realized also may be a type of familiar - someone who can boost our energy or health more - perhaps a connection to the spirit/animal world, so...when they die, that connection is severed, strength and hope lost. I think their death is tragic on so many levels, that some of it can only be felt and not reasoned. I'll go hug my dog now, I need a boost of positive energy :0)

message 32: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Wheeler | 386 comments Marishka wrote: "I think it could be because it's the death of innocence. Pets are usually without guile, without ulterior motive, they simply are."

I agree they are innocents. I think it's also that no matter how much people may love you, nobody loves you with the unconditional love of a pet. That is a blessing rare and beautiful.

Molly (molly32) | 2 comments Setta Jay' s Guardians series, features a dog (hell hound actually) and some magical, matchmaking cats later on. It's a fun series (and on the naughty side), also spoiler alert (view spoiler)

The pet doesn't die in my novel. I'm not a big fan of writing about death. I try to show the characters as victorious rather than dying and the bad guy winning..

message 35: by Elizabeth (new)

Elizabeth Wheeler | 386 comments That's great. I have no problem with reading about people dying, but I can't stand if the animal dies. Guess I'm just one of the nutty tree hugging, bleeding heart liberals LOL.

message 36: by Pavli (new)

Pavli St. (cheers95) | 6 comments The Necromancer's Dance At the end of the second book he gets a very special pet, that comes from the demon realm. I'm not going to give anything else away because the suprise was the best part. The "pet" has a bigger part in the 3rd book.
