Historical / cast away similar to "Seize the Fire"

I am trying to remember the name of a historical / cast away book. It is similar to Laura Kinsale's "Seize the Fire".

Here is how I remember it:

A young women is on a ship that takes a stop on a well populated island. (Don't remember why she was on the ship?) While there she goes out after dark (don't remember why) and ends up sitting up high in a tree overlooking a walled courtyard. She overhears some plot (or what she thinks is a plot). The hero appears (but may not have actually been a part of or heard said plot). I seem to remember donkeys and dogs here as well.

In any case, at some point there is a ship wreck and they end up on an uninhabited island. I don't remember any specifics from here or how it ends. I don't think it is "Seize the Fire" - for some reasons I think I read two books that had startling similarities, but it was several years ago.

I may actually be combining two or three books in my memory?

Could it be Wild Bells to the Wild Sky by Laurie McBain? The heroine was a child at the time of the shipwreck and spent several years on the island with her family until rescued by the hero. Worth a read even if it isn't the book you're looking for!
