SOLVED. Children's book, red days and blue days. [s]

Ok, so this was a children's book I read in roughly 2006. It was one of those slightly longer children's book, but not a chapter book (there were pictures). What I remember of the plot is that there are alternating red days and blue days in the town the story takes pace in. On one of these days (red days maybe?) everyone in the town turns into an animal. (At least I'm pretty sure that's what happened – my memory is fuzzy). The main character was a girl who didn't turn into an animal, and felt left out, something about her running away into the desert? That's all I can remember.
