Thanks for calling that passage out, an excellent example demonstrating how words fantastically fictional can communicate an image more vivid than factually precise prose. (I like David's "faintly ridiculous," more accurate here than "fantastically fictional." The passage ends up doing duty on several levels, from creating a mental picture to sketching the character of a woman to adding a bit of levity. Anybody need an example for a writing class they may be teaching?)
