Could this be the Tripods trilogy by John Christopher? The White Mountain, City of Gold and Lead, The Pool of Fire. Young men are 'capped' at puberty.

The aliens are very large, they look like machines from a Star Wars movie(the book was written before the first Star Wars movie, I believe). The alien/machine is oval on top with long tripod legs. The boys meet a young girl on their journey, They try to talk her into running away with them, but she ends up getting implanted.
