I must have read this book around 1986 or so. It starts with the dead body of a ?homeless? man found near a bridge. He had been stabbed. I think the bridge was old and falling apart. As the story progresses, the kid that found the body befriends a overweight kid a discovers the kid ?or one of his parents? collects artifacts from ww2. The reveal is that the overweight kids had killed the man found near the bridge using a ?knife?bayonet? from ww2. I think the overweight boy ends up falling through the bridge and dying.

I am sure I am not thinking of King's "The Body" or "Apt Pupil"
