Hi there, I've googled this in all sorts of ways and can't seem to be able to find the title. I read this when I was in middle school in mid 90s, but I'm not sure how old the book was. It had a modern feel back then. The main character was a teenager girl that found herself behind in math (algebra maybe? Calculus? Definitely numbers involved) and needed to improve grades because of college, maybe she was a junior or a senior in high school. Anyway, the person who ends up helping her is a neighbor or classmate who doesn't speak, but it turns out he can write wonderful maths explanations. He is cold at first, and definitely has some trouble relating to other people, but they get closer and she falls for him, kissing him at some point, to which he reacts by freaking out and running away.
Eventually (spoilers), we find out that the guy had stopped talking when he was younger because his older brother told him if he talked a bomb would go off in his brain, and the main character helps expose the older brother as the villain he is and the guy starts recovering little by little.
I really hope this jogs someone's memory, would hope to have another read if not just for a nostalgia factor.
That's the one! Just reading the summary, I recognised the characters' names. Thank you so much! Completely forgot she was the new girl in town. Thank you!!!
