Jon Finch Hey book nerds!

I read my first Stephen King book at the beginning of 2017, and immediately fell in love. Shortly after, I vowed to read every piece of writing ever produced by the man (crazy, I know)! After getting a few books in, I thought it would be way more fun to turn this challenge into a virtual book club!

I decided to document my progress and reviews of each book by starting my own youtube channel! I am calling the series "The Quest Through King"! Check it out here: https://youtu.be/sRVaUUQD_WY

If anyone is interested in following along, I would love to discuss the books with you guys when we finish in the comments section, as well as updating my progress here! I think this could be a really fun way to start a reading community!

If you don't have time to read each book, feel free to check back for my reviews on the 1st and 15th of every month! If you have already read the book, please come back and share what you thought! If you aren't interested, feel free to skip that week and check back the next!

I am so excited, and I hope a few of you are as well!

I also started a goodreads group you are more than welcome to join here: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/...

Stephen KingThe ShiningEverything's Eventual: 14 Dark Tales

Kath Castle I have probably read eveything he has ever written, with the exception of The Dark Tower books, which I haven't managed to get in to at all.

As with all authors, some are better than others.
A favourite of mine has always been The Stand, also his longest I believe!
Not so much Cell and Under the Dome, however I read both & never stick with a book I am not enjoying reading.

I will take a look at your youtube channel later on, meanwhile, happy reading!

P.S.
If you love SK, you would probably enjoy Dean Koontz.

Jon Finch Wow, thanks for the comment! I just read the Gunslinger and although it could get difficult to read through at certain points, I loved it! It had a Tolkien meets western vibe.
I can't wait to read the Stand, but I won't get to it until summer, when I have a couple months off!

Kath Castle Bearing in mind I have been reading almost as long as he has been writing, have probably forgotten a great deal!

Just to add, more recent favourite has been 11.22.63, & best film by far has to be The Shawshank Redemption.

Shari Eyes of the Dragon is a great novel by King. Probably my favorite by him. The Stand is another good one, but I didn't care for the TV movie. One I will never read again is It.

Mixter Anderson I have been on the same quest for the past year or so. I seriously recommend Rose Madder. It's one of the lesser known novels, but it's fantastic. I kissed the book after I finished it.

message 7: by Jon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jon Finch Thanks for all the input everyone! 11.22.63 sounds amazing Kath! It is definitely in my top 10 most anticipated reads! I am trying to space out his epics and classics throughout my reading list so I have some amazing books to look forward to throughout the journey! I have only seen bits and pieces of Shawshank, but I have liked what I saw! I will watch the full thing once I get finish the novella!

Shari, I take it you are a big fan of Randall Flagg with those two books as your favorite. Can't wait to read those! I am curious if you are not compelled to reread it because of the length, the horror, or a general dislike of the book.

Lainagh, when I was at my local book store recently they had first editions of Rose Madder and Dolores Claiborne. I grabbed Claiborne and am about halfway through. I suppose I will need to check back soon and hope it's still there! Thanks for the help!

Shari It was the mental image I was left with in some scenes in "It.". I haven't read the book in over 20 yrs, but some of those scenes still make me cringe when I think of them.

Colleen Maguire The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is my favorite by far. Currently I am reading It and 11.22.63. I have read so many of his books, but still find more I need to read. In the middle of the Cell, put that down quite a while ago, it is disturbing. I hope to eventually have all of his read! Keep going! His library is extensive and varied.

message 10: by Jon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jon Finch Shari, Yikes! Sounds awesome!

Colleen, thanks for stopping by! I can't wait to read Tom Gordon. As a huge baseball fan, that book sounds great! I have a copy of cell ready to go!

Jon Finch Hello everyone! I have just posted my first book review for the Shining! Check it out here: https://youtu.be/w7E-eaoJ8YY

Lainagh, if you watch the video you may notice a new book in my collection! Thanks for the recommendation! For those who may be following along, the next books in the Quest will be Mr. Mercedes (April 1) and The Gunslinger (April 15).

Hope to see you all on the Quest!

Dirk My favorit where ever the books written under Richard Bachmann. They were different from all he had written sice then. Also the "The dark half." The Dark Half is a good one.

message 13: by Jon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jon Finch Thanks for the advice Dirk! I'll keep my eyes peeled for a copy of the Bachman Books! The Dark Half sounds great too!

Maggie The Shining is still my favorite. I'm actually attending the University SK is an alumn to, and he came to campus to launch his new book a few months ago! He is hilarious is real life! Also a little creepy, he was pacing the floor like a caged lion, but he did admit there's a reason why writers generally avoid the public eye. Too funny!

Maggie Colleen wrote: "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon is my favorite by far. Currently I am reading It and 11.22.63. I have read so many of his books, but still find more I need to read. In the middle of the Cell, put tha..."

I love that book too! It's one of his less creepy stories. Haven't read Cell yet, will have to give it a try.

message 16: by Jon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jon Finch That's awesome Maggie! I actually think I saw a recording of that SK appearance.

Maggie Jon wrote: "That's awesome Maggie! I actually think I saw a recording of that SK appearance."

No way! Was it at UMaine? I've been a fan of his books for a long time so I was fangirling :D

message 18: by Jon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jon Finch Yes, that sounds familiar!

Ophelia Crane I really thought I was the only one who decided to read every darn book he's ever written. :D Yeah, okay, I'm in for this.

message 20: by Jon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jon Finch Thanks Ophelia! It's going to be quite the task, but I find myself anticipating the next book more and more after each read!

Colleen Maguire I just finished IT and 11-22-63. Loved them both. 11-22-63 was very well done I highly recommend!!! Next will be The Stand. Haven't read it in many many years !

Limey Lady My very first SK was The Stand. In my opinion the full version (with The Kid wanting to "piss Coors if I could") is simply magnificent. To me, "It" comes a close second. To be honest, all his early stuff was brilliant and the Bachman books (especially the long walk one) is great. I did lose a bit of interest with more recent stuff but when I read them again they just get better. I guess I'm a fan!

message 23: by Jon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jon Finch Colleen, I am so excited for both of those books!

Limey, thanks for your thoughts! In my reading order, I am intentionally spreading out the classics and some of his newer stuff so that I always have books to look forward to!

Limey Lady Well, Jon, there are certainly enough of them! I just named two books as magnificent but even the very early stuff (like Carrie and Firestarter) are well worth a read. The only early one I mildly disliked was The Shining, but that's probably SK's most successful, if you take into account the Jack Nicholson film . . . so what do I know!!

Pet Semetary and Salem's Lot are classics, by the way; packed with action if not necessarily "literary". If you haven't read them already, move 'em up your list.

James My take on this is if someone is just now finding the joys of reading Kings work, I would recommend either Salem's Lot or The Shining. I believe this is King at his best. Forget the movies, They were all terrible with the exception of the Shawshank Redemption and Stand by Me. My first was The Shining and I never looked back. I have read all except the Gunslinger books which I will take on soon. Other favorites are Christine, Pet Sematary and The Dead Zone and Bag of Bones. Enjoy! Your in for quite a ride...

message 26: by Jon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jon Finch Brittany, thanks for your input. I think I am going to read doctor sleep pretty soon!

James, I appreciate your sage King wisdom and look forward to the trip!

message 27: by Bill (new) - rated it 4 stars

Bill Greenwood I re-read Salem's Lot last summer, some 40 years after the first time I read it. It stands the test of time. The first time I read it, I borrowed it from a high school friend and read it in one night. I was hooked on the old King-meister from then on.
My personal favorites are "The Stand", and "Hearts in Atlantis." I thought "Atlantis" had the most heart wrenching ending of any of his books.

Maria I have this goal from a while as well! I enjoyed every one of his books which I read, but I can say that IT, Shining and Doctor Sleep are my favourites, along with the Dark Tower saga, that is amazing! If you like his books and his world, you should really read this series.

message 29: by Jon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jon Finch Thanks Maria! I have already read the gunslinger and my review will be uploaded on April 15th! I can't wait to read IT!

message 30: by Jon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jon Finch Hey again Readers! I just posted my video review for Mr. Mercedes! Make sure you stay tuned for the stop-motion segment! https://youtu.be/1Dt3LhP4dR0

message 31: by Neda (new) - rated it 4 stars

Neda Nima What's funny and really cool is that just before I looked at this thread, I made it a goal to read every single Stephen King book as well! My personal favorites are the Dark Tower Series, and It. I love them so much that I've read both multiple times and discover new things each time.

Mr. Mercedes was great, and I've been wanting to get my hands on the latest of that series for a while now! I look forward to watching your YouTube videos!

message 32: by Jon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jon Finch Thanks Neda! My gunslinger review will be up in a couple day! Stephen King has become an addiction! The more I read, the more I want to continue reading!

Philip Palmer Salem's Lot is a particular favourite of mine....the MOBY DICK of horror novels (in that it's an epic/classic, and an inspiration in terms of scope). CHRISTINE is also awesome. King is a genius whose sheer output is almost beyond belief. I bet his shopping lists have cliffhangers and a rising action climax.

message 34: by Jon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jon Finch Hey everyone, I just uploaded my fourth episode of Quest Through King! This time, I am taking a look at the first book in the Dark a Tower series, a The Gunslinger! Check it out here: https://youtu.be/LxtqkrQBpp0

message 36: by Andrew (new)

Andrew Oh Stephen King definitely has to be my favourite author and I have read most of his books. The one I like the most was the one that looked like the size of a brick yes, you guessed right, The Stand. Such a huge book but a fantastic story line about end of times or Captain Trips if you like. Other than Stephen King Dean Koontz comes a close second.

Limey Lady Hi Andrew. I take it you mean the complete, uncut version of The Stand (the one with The Kid and his cans of Coors, etc). The originally published version (much shorter but still very long) was the first SK book I ever read. Needless to say, it hooked me and I'm still one of his biggest fans.

Hi Limey. Yes, that's the version. A fantastic read and I can return to the Stand time and time again although not straight away!

Limey Lady I know what you mean. I must have read the uncut version five or six times, but with intervals of years in-between. Come to think about it, I must be due to read it again sometime soon . . .

Mickey Tompkins Great idea! I subscribed to your channel.

message 41: by Jon (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jon Finch Thanks for subscribing! I have the complete and uncut stand, but need to clear up about a month to read it!

Mickey Tompkins Jon wrote: "Thanks for subscribing! I have the complete and uncut stand, but need to clear up about a month to read it!"

That & IT are the only two SK books I have read more than once.

I just read The Dark Tower books 1-4 and gave up....4 pissed me off...NO SPOILERS. Loved books 2 & 3 though.

Jon Finch Hello All! My Finders Keepers review is now up and can be accessed at the link below:

I have been looking to get more subscribers and more discussion in the comments of my videos!

I will be giving away a copy of Song of Susannah (Dark Tower 6) to all subscribers who comment on this video! Thanks and Good luck! I look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Brian Spuy King is probably my favorite author, but it still doesn't mean I necessarily want to read absolutely everything he wrote. Some of his books I didn't like all that much, and some I couldn't get into at all.

Well, he's so prolific it's quite a challenge to read everything he wrote, so good luck with the project!

message 45: by Bill (new) - rated it 4 stars

Bill Greenwood I decided to read "It" for the second time. I was surprised at how much I had misremembered the story arc. My memory was of it being two almost separate books, the first being set in 1958 and the second half being set in 1985.
The other thing that struck me was the emotional punch of the book. That did not resonate with me as much back in 86 or 87 when I first read it. I have long maintained that the ending of "Hearts in Atlantis" packed the most powerful and heartwrenching punch of any of King's works that I've read. I might reconsider that over the next few days.

message 46: by Jack (new) - rated it 5 stars

Jack Lexington Hello, The 4 I would recommend is Salem's Lot, Misery, The Green Mile and The Shining. They are my four favourites from Stephen King. May I also suggest two other authors you might enjoy in Dean Koontz and the sadly deceased James Herbert. Happy reading!! :)
