March M-o-M Challenge – Lela
Begins: 01Mar17 / Ends: 31Mar17

(4/5)

✔ 1. Lela has never been to Montana - read a book set in a place you've never been but would like to go. Be sure to tell us the location.
Hell Is Open by Gard Sveen
I've always wanted to visit Norway.

✔ 2. Her beloved Tabby is a rescue cat - Have you rescued a pet?
--I've had lots of "rescued pets". I used to work with a small group in Dallas that tamed feral cats.
My current "rescued pet" is a cat who, as a kitten, forged a small creek and high weeds to crawl up my husband's jeans to claim us as his.

✔3. Lela's favorite genre is MYSTERY - Read a mystery.
Death by Chocolate Lab by Bethany Blake

✔4. Lela's funny story about herself involves a road trip with girlfriends. - Share an anecdote about a road trip you've taken.

I was going away for the weekend with my slightly large dog, Sam, traveling from Texas to Alabama. While traveling on I-20, my dog suddenly starting whining and yipping. I had the windows down and I at first thought he might’ve picked up the scent of another dog or animal. He sounded sort of desparate so I turned and asked him what was going on. He furrowed his brows and had a worried look on his face. I said, “Sam, do you have to go potty?” He replied with multiple high-pitched yips which I took to be an emphatic yes and I saw a sign for a rest area in 3 miles. I asked, “Sam, can you hold it?” He gave me a very nervous look and very worried whine. I decided then and there to just pull off into the emergency lane.

The poor thing was starting to lose control and I almost shut the car door on him trying to get him out of the back seat before he totally lost it. I finally got him out and let’s just say he must’ve eaten something that really hadn’t agreed with him. Luckily, I always traveled with towels and I always covered the back seat with an old bedspread when Sam traveled with me, so the little bit he couldn’t stop got rolled up and tossed. No harm, no foul.

Meanwhile one of the “roadside assistance” vehicles had pulled up and a very macho looking man started strutting toward me and asked if I needed assistance. I explained, with a screwed up nose from the aroma, that it was an emergency stop -- just not his kind of emergency. The driver looked at my poor dog with his head hanging in shame and seemed to realize what had occurred (or almost occurred). His expression changed to one of fear and he held his arms out as he slowly backed away saying, “Um, yeah, well, it looks like you have it all under contol now.” He quickly got back into his vehicle but at least stayed until I started on my way again.

5. Lela's mother got her interested in watching GOLF - Read a book where the letters of G O L F are found in the title and/or subtitle (any order). e.g. title: havinG LOts of Fun ....(I made up that title for illustration purposes)

Missed it by one

March M-o-M Challenge – Lela
Begins: 01Mar17 / Ends: 31Mar17

4 / 5 completed

✔ 1. Lela has never been to Montana - read a book set in a place you've never been but would like to go. Be sure to tell us the location - Scotland & Jamaica - Voyager ✔ – 18Mar17

✔ 2. Her beloved Tabby is a rescue cat - Have you rescued a pet? - When I was a child we almost always got our dogs from "the pound." Our favorite was probably a little black mutt we named Ruffy.

✔ 3. Lela's favorite genre is MYSTERY - Read a mystery - Deeper Than the Dead ✔ – 01Mar17

✔ 4. Lela's funny story about herself involves a road trip with girlfriends. - Share an anecdote about a road trip you've taken - We always drove on family vacations. When my youngest brother was about 8 he insisted that he could pack his own suitcase. My mother must have told him a dozen (or a million) times not to forget to pack underwear. He didn't forget. When we arrived at our first overnight stop, he opened his suitcase and it was stuffed with all the underwear he owned ... and nothing else. No change of clothes at all. We had to make a quick trip to a K-mart for some shorts and Tees for him.

5. Lela's mother got her interested in watching GOLF - Read a book where the letters of G O L F are found in the title and/or subtitle (any order). e.g. title: havinG LOts of Fun ....(I made up that title for illustration purposes)

Sheila | 545 comments I'm in. I just finished posting February's reads but I made it.

5/5 I did it. It was hard finding a book that had the letters spelling GOLF in it but I finally found one.

1. Lela has never been to Montana - read a book set in a place you've never been but would like to go. Be sure to tell us the location. I would love to go to Paris. Seven Letters From Paris by Samantha Verant Seven Letters from Paris by Samantha Verant

2. Her beloved Tabby is a rescue cat - Have you rescued a pet?

No, I've never rescued a pet. I don't have any pets.

3. Lela's favorite genre is MYSTERY - Read a mystery. Tonight in the Rivers of Pittsburgh by Brian Lee Weakland Tonight in the Rivers of Pittsburgh by Brian Lee Weaklalnd
4. Lela's funny story about herself involves a road trip with girlfriends. - Share an anecdote about a road trip you've taken.

Last June I was at Lori Foster's Reader's Appreciate Getaway in Cincinnati. I was going to take the bus home to Pittsburgh when a friend from Philadelphia asked if I'd like a ride home. I said yes. So we loaded up her car and got on the road. It's about a six-hour trip between Cincinnati and Pittsburgh. We stopped for lunch at a Cracker Barrel and spent 2 hours there talking as well as eating. We did a lot of talking. Instead of bringing her all the way to my home, I had her stop at my sister's which was close to the turnpike. My sister had been out but was on her way home. My sister made my friend coffee and food for her continuing journey. She got home to Philadelphia around 5 hours later. You meet the best people at book conferences.

I'm not sure this is an "anecdote" but here goes. Last summer my husband decided that we were going to ride our motorcycle from home (southern Indiana) to Florida so that some guy could put some new equipment on the bike...I don't know, it now goes faster and makes more noise, you know--a guy thing. Anyway, I wasn't looking forward to 10 hours on the bike in one day but it's a trip with my husband and surely something will turn out to be fun. Well, the weather was great and the ride was not bad. We spent the night, had the work done on the bike and then the next morning took off towards home with my husband announcing that we had a few stops to make so we'd be spending the night again. He gave me the map and as always we got into a big fight because I always say things that he can't translate...so I was fuming and I guess he was too but we eventually made it to where he was going. We walked into a small shop and I noticed some Walking Dead merchandise and then some more and then some huge cut outs of Walking Dead characters. Turns out he had taken me to the town where they have filmed many episodes of The Walking Dead--including the town of Alexandria. I am a huge fan. So, as mad as I had been I threw my arms around him and said--best surprise ever!!!!!!! He's the best...except for following directions. :)
