Trying to, Graeme. Just got turned down for the 7th time *sigh*. I submit religiously every month trying to get a deal.

Yes it is the most expensive but also the most effective. The best I've been able to do for a free promotion day is 5800 downloads, but with a Bookbub deal, authors are averaging 40K to 60K free downloads. For my book for a one-day feature on Bookbub costs in the neighborhood of $400-500 (depending on whether I do historical fic or historical mystery, or U.S. only vs. worldwide).
For a 99 cent book, you can expect a cost more like $1K.
It is the most competitive of all the marketing sites and they decline up to 90% of submissions.
I'm going to keep trying :).

Now I understand. OK.Also they have in their rules that they need to be the "Best Deal" in the quarter. So I may start running every other promo as 1.99 and reserve a 0.99 slot for Bookbub.

Manybooks it's similar to Bookbub :)

Well the similarities are that people get booklinks to books that are on sale (by email like on bookbub) I don't know about the rest since I'm not a writer. Think one of the differences is that manybooks has an author of the day. I wish I could answer all the rest of your questions Nik, but I really don't know :( There's also a site called instafreebie where authors can promote their books/short story etc.

All this suggests a specific strategy as follows.
Set your book at a reasonable price, say $4.99.
Offer it at 0.99 for the featured deal - hence big discount.
If first in a series - consider offering it free.
Noting the requirement to be the best deal. Keep the price range for Bookbub out of action with other advertisers to make it more attractive.
