30.5 - Jonquil’s task: There Is No Frigate Like A Book

This is a two book task.

Book 1: Read a book with a cover that shows the type of place where you like to read.

Read in the tub? Dead, Bath, and Beyond (Victoria Square, #4) by Lorraine Bartlett
Have a hammock? Sweet Tomorrows (Rose Harbor #5) by Debbie Macomber
Frequent a diner? Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant by Anne Tyler
On a plane? Inflight Science A Guide to the World From Your Airplane Window by Brian Clegg
At the office? The Cubicle Next Door by Siri L. Mitchell

Book 2: Read a second book with a cover that shows a different reading spot or a variation on book 1's spot.

The cover should be detailed enough for us to recognize a place, not just an object. So a desk with a lamp and laptop will work, but just a laptop won’t work. If you read in the bathtub, The Hot Flash Club Strikes Again by Nancy Thayer won’t work because we can’t really tell where these people are.

Won't work:
Smugglers & Scones (Moorehaven Mysteries, #1) by Morgan C. Talbot The Man on the Balcony (Martin Beck #3) by Maj Sjöwall Murder by John Steinbeck

Will work:
Prose and Cons (Magical Bookshop, #2) by Amanda Flower The Amateur Marriage by Anne Tyler

Required: Post the two covers. Explain the connection between the cover image and your reading spot.

Sample post:
Book 1 I read when we go camping in the National Park near my home
A Walk in the Woods Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail by Bill Bryson
Book 2 My job requires lots of travel, so I read in hotel rooms
Below the Belt (Stone Barrington #40) by Stuart Woods

Terri FL (territhemuse) | 615 comments Hi, I just want to make sure I understand and my books work.

This one has a chair by a window, favorite place one, although in my current home, I don't have much natural light!
Hard Laughter by Anne Lamott

Second place is in bed, where I read every night. Is this enough to tell it is a bed in a bedroom?
Ellen Foster by Kaye Gibbons

Night Mare (Xanth, #6) by Piers Anthony - I like to read in the library
Ogre, Ogre (Xanth #5) by Piers Anthony - but I also like to read in the grass outside?

Does anyone ever truly expect their ship to down, BC? Take your Dramamine and enjoy A Night to Remember.

Terri- I also live in a cave which is sad because I love houseplants so can't condemn them to certain death. The Lamott cover works.

Yes, I can tell that it's a bed. Ellen Foster can be emotionally challenging, so permit me to recommend that you read it in your chair and select Hard Laughter at bedtime.

Maya- very cozy library. so yes on Night Mare.

When you post Ogre, Ogre please mention that footloose and fancy free Jonquil mentioned in message 10 that she endorses reading in the green grass, even beside ogres. Headache remedies are expensive, so I'd like to protect our conscientious moderators from my whimsy.

I had to go to a larger cover on Amazon to confirm that the blurry object was a car, so when you post Silence will you please mention the car for the Mods? Thanks!

Thanks! I'll be on the alert for Ellen Foster then. I'll be moving into my new home in April, and there is a large picture window for the living room, so, I'm looking forward to tons of light! I hate being in a cave. One should not have to turn on the light to read in the middle of the day. :)

Yes, they work. Buying a Kindle changed my life, now my allowable 50 pounds of checked luggage actually includes beach clothes rather than just books.

Actually, I like to lounge on my loveseat when I read. I couldn't fond any covers with a loveseat or living room.

message 32: by Brooke (new)

Brooke | 1419 comments I'm a little confused about scope/specificity on this one, so would any of these work:
Reading at the bar!
Last Call at the Nightshade Lounge by Paul Krueger
Reading on the grass, picnic-style!
The Anatomist's Wife (Lady Darby, #1) by Anna Lee Huber
Reading in a tree, which is a totally unsafe thing I did as a child!
Crossroads of Canopy (Titan's Forest, #1) by Thoraiya Dyer
Reading in a cabin in the woods, a somewhat safer thing I did as a child and wish I could do more of now!
The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden
Reading outside in the woods, because nature!
Dreamer's Pool (Blackthorn & Grim, #1) by Juliet Marillier
Reading at the beach!
Winter Tide (The Innsmouth Legacy, #1) by Ruthanna Emrys
Or by a lake!
The Madman’s Daughter (The Madman’s Daughter, #1) by Megan Shepherd

Brooke- Relying purely on romantic suspense books I've read, my takeaway is reading in a tree may be safer than reading in a cabin. Your post makes me long for vacation. These will all work.

Andy- either will work, the 1st on the grass beside the pool. The second in the library or living room since it could be either one.

Hi, Amber, not such good news. Into the Light is too dark to really tell where you're reading. I'd be happier if The Woman in Cabin 10 showed a wider view, I had to read the goodreads page to tell that the image is likely a porthole and there's no ship or island or even a rock visible from the maybe-porthole where you could read. The End of Everything also makes it hard to tell where you'd read since everything is distorted, abstract and blurry --more of a photography class exercise than a clear image of a pool or poolside.

So sorry, but you're three for three on selecting covers that even my fanciful interpretations can't make work. Sigh...

Coralie- you may want to consider
Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell Cross My Heart by Julie Wright Absolutely, Positively (Lucy Valentine, #3) by Heather Webber Truly Madly Deeply by Faraaz Kazi The Park Bench Test by Sarah Lefebve The Sins of the Father (The Clifton Chronicles, #2) by Jeffrey Archer Farewell Trip by Karin Dixon By My Side by Alice Peterson Love Rules by Freya North Rumours by Freya North

Wow, Chick Lit seems to have an affinity for park benches.

To answer your question, a cityscape is too broad, since you read on a bench on a sidewalk overlooking the buildings when you're outside. And you sit in a chair looking out at the city when you're home.
