Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments Hi all,

For the benefit of this community and for my own education via record and feedback, I'm relating all my experiences with conducting paid advertising promos for the following books.

A Subtle Agency (The Metaframe War, #1) by Graeme Rodaughan , A Traitor's War (The Metaframe War, #2) by Graeme Rodaughan , The Dragon's Den (The Metaframe War, #3) by Graeme Rodaughan , The Day Guard (The Metaframe War, #4) by Graeme Rodaughan , The Crane War (The Metaframe War, #5) by Graeme Rodaughan

I'm running some promos in the near future.

[1] ereadernewstoday on the 24th Feb 2017

[2] Bargain Booksy (Fantasy/Paranormal) on the 28th Feb 2017

[3] Bargain Booksy (Thriller) on the 3rd March 2017

These are all paid advertising promos, and I'll post results as they occur.

Marie Silk | 1018 comments Sounds like a great lineup!! Good luck :)

Nik Krasno | 11064 comments Getting into gear, best of luck!

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments Thanks.

Trying to group together to create a multi pronged approach.

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments The ereadernews promo ran yesterday and generated 12 14 sales over a 2 day period.

An OK result for a first run. My understanding is that readers need to see an add 2 or 3 times before they take the plunge.

Thinking about these efforts. They are all setup to service multiple sales channels like Google Nobo nook etc. Perhaps it is time to give serious thought to moving away from KDP as I don't get many kindle unlimited reads.

message 6: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments The two bargain booksy promos are coming up shortly.

14 sales in 2 days is not bad at all!
What were the costs of the promo? Where did 14 sales put you in ranking in your sub-genre?

Nik Krasno | 11064 comments Graeme Rodaughan wrote: "The two bargain booksy promos are coming up shortly."

Hope it goes even better!

message 9: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments Sub 100 in the suspense/thriller/vampires category.

It provides a nice launch pad for the two BB promos coming up.

$40 USD.

I picked up another sale overnight, so I'll call this one 15 sales.

I would prefer to bunch them closer together to enhance the impact on my ranking which can pull in other readers. But a 4 day separation was the best I could do this time.

message 10: by Graeme (last edited Mar 02, 2017 03:43AM) (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments B-Booksy on the 28th under the Fantasy genre generated 13 15 sales and a full KU read.

14 16 sales total. Not bad for a mid-week promo.

Hitting BB again this weekend under thriller genre which is a bigger market.

message 11: by Marie Silk (new)

Marie Silk | 1018 comments Nice one, Graeme! I'm enjoying your updates :)

message 12: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments Just following in your footsteps...

message 13: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 11064 comments Well done, Graeme!
Your books become a high demand commodity, grabbed like cold water in a desert -:)

message 14: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments Thanks Nik,

I think that's still quite a way off...

message 15: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments Got another 9 sales from the 2nd B-Booksy.

40 sales for a campaign cost of $130 USD.

Hmmm.

message 16: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 11064 comments At what price were the sales?

message 17: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments 0.99. Some minimum royalty.

At this point in the process I'm not worried about royalties. Just trying to find and connect with readers.

message 18: by Nik (new)

Nik Krasno | 11064 comments And also some ricochet sales may still trickle in. Hope these campaigns start some buzz!

message 19: by Alex (new)

Alex (asato) i think this book has moved up in the sales rankings on amazon, no? isn't that the bellwether?

message 20: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments Right now 72,688 in the Kindle Book store.

My attitude is that this is like a business and capital has to be injected at the start - or nothing will happen.

i absolutely agree. a business looks for growth in the beginning, not profitability--although one doesn't want to dig oneself too far down into the hole.

message 22: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments A reasonable budget might be between $1K and $2K per year for paid advertising and just do something every month to keep it all ticking over. And then let time do its work.

In the other side of the process, I have to always improve my craft to produce a better product.

Agreed on this, although it sure helps to have books in a series--advertise for one and you advertise for them all.

message 24: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments Hi Marie.

That's a key point and one I am looking forward to.

message 25: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer S. Alderson (jennifesalderson) | 27 comments Fascinating stuff, thanks for sharing Graeme!

message 26: by Graeme (last edited Mar 05, 2017 02:08PM) (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments Hi Jennifer. Everything I've learned so far about marketing as come from this group.

I'm very happy to contribute back anything I can.

message 27: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments The next promotion I'm planning is a free promotion where I will use multiple channels to hit the same window.

ASA will be free on Amazon from the 24th to 26th March inclusive.

I've lined up Book Barbarian for an email.
I will use Ask David for twitter.

I will promote for free on goodreads, Facebook and Twitter using my own efforts.

I might do a free booksy if I can get the right dates.

message 28: by Eldon (new)

Eldon Farrell | 682 comments Very nice results Graeme :D

I'm considering ereadernews...would you say it was worth the investment?

message 29: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments I think it is part of the mix. They offer a per quarter opportunity.

BargainBooksy is per month.

I'm still establishing channels.

BTW. Best results are on weekends.

message 30: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments I've added a Reading Deals promo to the Book Barbarian promo for the 24-26 Mar free promo.

So two paid promos in action at the same time.

message 31: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments The freebooksy at $100 for a free price promo was a bit steep for me this month.

Nik Krasno | 11064 comments Graeme Rodaughan wrote: "I've added a Reading Deals promo to the Book Barbarian promo for the 24-26 Mar free promo.

Hope this works excellently!

message 33: by Graeme (last edited Mar 12, 2017 11:59AM) (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments Thanks Nik.

Previous free promos w/o paid advertising resulted in 100 to 150 downloads.

For the investment, I would be looking for 500+.

message 34: by Graeme (last edited Mar 24, 2017 05:19PM) (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments Currently running the Free Promo.

[1] Reading Deals ($29 USD) for 3 days of website, tweets, and emails.

[2] BookBarbarian ($40 USD) for 1 day of email, facebook and website advertising.

[3] AskDavid (<$10 USD) for a number of tweets to their followers.

20 hours in. 304 downloads. #3 rank in Mystery, Thriller & Suspense > Suspense > Paranormal > Vampires for most of today.

Well on track to exceed the 500+ downloads I was aiming for as the BookBarbarian promo hasn't started yet.

message 35: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments I'll be interested to see if I can hit #2 or #1 position this weekend.

message 36: by Eldon (new)

Eldon Farrell | 682 comments Go for Number #1!!

message 37: by Marie Silk (last edited Mar 24, 2017 05:55PM) (new)

Marie Silk | 1018 comments Hay Graeme, your ranks are looking good :)

message 38: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments Thanks Marie,

Very envious of your Bookbub selection but also very happy for you as it is richly deserved.

Very well done.

Cheers Graeme

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments Eldon wrote: "Go for Number #1!!"

We'll have to see how the BookBarbarian promo plays out on Saturday.

I believe (rightly or wrongly) that weekend promos are best.

Leonie (leonierogers) | 1486 comments That's excellent news!

message 41: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments 1 day and 14 hours in.

There are also some tweets by AskDavid and an email from eBookDaily (free).

Results.

Day 1 complete: 400 downloads.

Day 2: 530 downloads (at 2pm Saturday US Pacific Time)

Total downloads 930.

Amazon Ranks

#238 - Free in Kindle Store
#2 - Mystery, Thriller & Suspense > Suspense > Paranormal > Vampires
#7 - Science Fiction & Fantasy > Fantasy > Paranormal & Urban

TBR up by 7.

message 44: by Marie Silk (new)

Marie Silk | 1018 comments #238 free in Kindle store is awesome, as are your other stats! Congrats!!

message 45: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments Thanks Marie.

message 46: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments Day 2: 804 downloads (at 9:10pm Saturday US Pacific Time)

Total downloads 1204

Best Amazon Ranks today

#165 - Free in Kindle Store
#2 - Mystery, Thriller & Suspense > Suspense > Paranormal > Vampires
#7 - Science Fiction & Fantasy > Fantasy > Paranormal & Urban

Can't seem to move past #2 or #7, starting to ease off now, probably peaked.

message 47: by Graeme (new)

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments Need to take a break with marketing for awhile as once a FREE campaign has been done plenty of the marketers want a gap before a PRICED (say 0.99 or higher) campaign is done.

However I do have a Bargain Booksy in for Saturday 1st of April (hope they don't turn it down).

Graeme Rodaughan | 5877 comments Day 1: 400 downloads
Day 2: 867 downloads
Day 3: 115 (at 1:00pm Sunday US Pacific Time)

Total downloads 1382

Best Amazon Ranks over the promotion

#146 - Free in Kindle Store
#2 - Mystery, Thriller & Suspense > Suspense > Paranormal > Vampires
#6 - Science Fiction & Fantasy > Fantasy > Paranormal & Urban

Fading now.
