Jane (PS) | 24353 comments Huh - wiki has PtP under the Hot Potato game and is saying it is from traditions in the Northern US. It was fun anyway :D

Becky (fibrobabe) | 1573 comments Hot Potato was definitely a thing when I was a kid. (This would have been in Pennsylvania and/or Iowa, so the Northeast and Midwest.) I'd heard of Pass the Parcel before this challenge, in a vague, "I've heard of it but I don't know the specifics" kind of way.

Interesting...I remember Hot Potato and other similar passing games, but all the ones that we played were more a negative in terms of getting stuck with what was being passed, rather than positive. Instead of unwrapping and possibly getting a little prize when you unwrap the parcel, if you were stuck with the "potato" when the music stopped you were eliminated from the circle, until it was down to just one, who wins the game (and probably some sort of prize).

Jane (PS) | 24353 comments That potato one is like musical chairs - if you don't get to a chair in time, you are out. I like PtP better :D

message 55: by ~KarenH~, Moderator (new)

~KarenH~ | 11376 comments Yes, it is very much the same. We actually played Musical Chairs more than Hot Potato.

Tink Magoo is bad at reviews (tinkmagoo) | 1390 comments It's common here in England. Each layer normally has a sweet in for the lucky unwrapper with the middle having a small prize.
My Mum used to used newspaper which meant everyone ended up with dirty hands. Don't think she thought that through too well

message 57: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24353 comments I remember we used newspaper as well but can't recall any sweets in the layers :( Poor us! I think the excitement is as meant to be enough ;)

Jane (PS) | 24353 comments Argh - on it!

message 61: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24353 comments Week 2

Option 1
13. Fairytales are generally based on quests and hunts. Read a book from one of the following lists:
Beauty and the Beast
Gay Cinderfellas
Best Retellings of Fairytales, Legends and History
Fairytale: Clean Romances

These are compulsory lists. Your selected book MUST come from one of these lists. You must link to the list and note which page/which number it is on that list.

Option 2
Key date: 14 September 2016

Please ensure you follow the format shown in msg 3 of your team threads.

It was a good reminder ;) I was milling around trying to work out what I hadn't done. PtP was missing from my mental checklist!

Calila | 2746 comments Jane (PS) wrote: "Calila wrote: "I was milling around trying to work out what I hadn't done."

I've had the last couple of days. Kept forgetting to add my completed books.

message 65: by Calila (last edited Mar 17, 2017 04:04PM) (new)

Calila | 2746 comments Jane, I think that last list is misnamed. It's not fairytale centric at all. It's "clean romance" focused. So all kinds of stories are on it.

message 66: by Calila (new)

Calila | 2746 comments Also question: My pick is on the list under one title, but has since been republished with a new title. Which edition should I link? I put both in my selection post right now.

message 67: by UnusualChild{beppy} (last edited Mar 17, 2017 04:26PM) (new)

UnusualChild{beppy} | 1282 comments huh. what are the odds that I would be on a team with no one who reads m/m? Fortunately I've started reading more m/f again, but that doesn't really help my teammates out.

message 68: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24353 comments Link to the old one Calila but good to show both :)

message 69: by Jane (PS), Moderator (last edited Mar 17, 2017 07:50PM) (new)

Jane (PS) | 24353 comments Sorry beppy - I thought you read both and I try to not manipulate the randomised lists much. If it's a real problem I could swap you out... PM me if so.

UnusualChild{beppy} | 1282 comments @jane: no, it's not a problem; I do read both. I like my team. I was just perusing their shelves for the couple of categories that I don't have book choices for, and to get an idea of what they like for the recco category and I noticed. I thought it was funny, that's all. :) I also feel a little bad for them because I haven't read a lot of m/f in the last few months, so there aren't as many choices.

Sorry about the 'Bert' - darn autocorrect as I typed on my phone!!

I'm sure there will still be plenty to help them out :) There's always option 3!! (Although only for one person per team ;)

message 72: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24353 comments EARLY CALL!!

Week 3

Option 1
11. Your own 'bear' hunt! Read a book with a male MC who is a bear, not necessarily a shifter from one of the following lists. (In contemporay romance, a 'bear' is a big tall male, possibly hairy.)
I'll Be Goldilocks: WereBears and Bear Shifters in Romance
Gentle Giants in Contemporary Romance
Petite Heroine/Big Hero
Gay Romance with Big Ugly Grizzly Bear MCs
Gay Bear Stories

These are compulsory lists. Your selected book MUST come from one of these lists. You must link to the list and note which page/which number it is on that list.

Option 2
Key date: 21 September 2016

Please ensure you follow the format shown in msg 3 of your team threads.

message 73: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24353 comments I'm travelling most of the day and then at a party ;) I'll be back poking around in about 36 hours :) I'll try to keep an eye on any questions but am mostly out of range on country roads.

okay, how about this, randomizer? I mean, you can hardly see him, and he looks like he's glaring at someone who would dare to take his kindle, but, well, he's all I have.

Hi Camille - that's fine. So long as you have it selected and posted before the following theme call, its fine.

So I'll make a call on Friday 14 April ~ you'll need to post your book before the next theme call on Friday 21 April :)

message 98: by Jane (PS), Moderator (new)

Jane (PS) | 24353 comments I'll get back to you Leisha...

message 99: by Jane (PS), Moderator (last edited Apr 07, 2017 02:17PM) (new)

Jane (PS) | 24353 comments Hi everyone

In response to Leisha's request and after conference with the 'Parcel' committee, we have decided to announce the PtP theme that falls on Good Friday early ~ it will now be announced later on Wednesday US EST (maybe 8pm?).

We believe that we are not far enough advanced in the play for an early announcement to impact the result. More importantly, it will allow those travelling to get their reading organised!

!Happy Easter break from the mods!

GreenFairy (greenfairy429) | 1096 comments Question:

If you're announcing early, do we still have to wait until Friday to start reading? Or is this not decided yet?
