Island Eyes: The Adventures of a Shell

2017 Request:
A book told from the perspective of a shell.

In the beginning, its original occupant is killed, possibly by a carnivorous sea snail.

It makes friends with a hermit crab. They have adventures, at one point there is an underwater school bus they explore.

In the end, humans pick up the shell and clean it and put it on display.

Elise, what year did you read this book?

Is this a picture book or a chapter book with mostly words for young children?

E (elisi) | 10 comments In the later 1990s, sorry, I can't narrow it down lol

And it was mostly a chapter book, with some illustrations. It was not for super young children, possibly for older children?

Hey Elise! I'm looking for a similar book: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...?

I don't remember an underwater school bus in mine, but maybe I forgot? You mentioned the shell becoming friends with a hermit crab - in your book, could your shell speak or communicate at all?

Found it! We were looking for the same book after all. And you were right, there's an underwater school bus, and adventures with a Hermit Crab.

E (elisi) | 10 comments Bryn, THANK YOU. This is amazing! I thought this would simply be a lost cause, especially after years later!

This is the book.

The internet is incredible.
